the pitch at upton park.

The original tribute intended to reference the entire culture of the club, in much the same way as

the Liverpool “boot boot” it was not solely reserved for the education of young players, but also

for the development of a modern approach to football from the root up as inspired by the success

of the Hungarian national term featuring fence puskas that had humiliated England 6-3 and the

great real Madrid side cup of the lates 1950s that dominated European cup.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

• Due to the complaint from the youth and upcoming player regarding to the lack of

football academy in the state there is need to design and build a standard functional and

2. 1. LITERATURE REVIEW

The related literature on football academy will be discussed under the following sub-

headings.

Concept and definition of football academy

Historical development of football academy

Football academy in England.

Football academy in Nigeria.

2.2 CONCEPT AND DEFINITION OF FOOTBALL ACADEMY BUILDING

The Football academyis a place that encourages each player to reach his full potential as

he passes through the development phases. This education provision is designed to be flexible

and to provide support for each player to achieve while remaining in their school of preference.

It includes both formal and informal education which reinforces the high expectations of the

Academy in relation to the ‘Tottenham Hotspur Standard’ of: Team Spirit; Friendship;

Excellence; Elite Player Conduct; Co-operation; Effort and Persistence and Respect, and

encompasses our holistic approach.

2.3 HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF FOOTBALL ACADEMY

The World Football Academy (WFA) is an initiative developed by Raymond Verheijen

in collaboration with a number of leading experts in world football. The Ambassador of the

World Football Academy is one of the world’s most highly respected and successful coaches of

his era: Guus Hiddink.

As a youth player Raymond Verheijen was part of the famous Dutch Academy structure.

Unfortunately, the dream of a professional career ended as a chronic injury forced him to retire at

the young age of 18. This disadvantage became an advantage as Verheijen got the opportunity to

start his coaching career at the age of 19. As a young football coach and from a football specific

perspective Verheijen studied Exercise Physiology and Sport Psychology at the Vrije University

Amsterdam. He completed his Masters Degrees in 1995. He also studied at the Liverpool John

Moores University in 1993-1995.

2.5 HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF FOOTBALL ACADEMY IN ENGLAND

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club Academy develops talented young footballers from the

age of 8 to 18yrs. Following the implementation of the Premier League Elite Player Performance

Plan and our Audit by Double Pass Ltd we were awarded Category One status. The Academy

employs a large team of staff to identify, recruit, coach, develop and support approximately 205

talented young players.

OUR VISION

To be one of the worlds’s leading football Clubs renowned for a strong association with

its community and a long tradition of developing young talent that plays football the ‘Tottenham

Hotspur’ way.

OUR MISSION

To create an elite environment that attracts, retains and develops top quality players

providing an ongoing supply of academy graduates to the First Team squad, whilst ensuring

those individuals who fall short of this standard have the necessary skills and education to enable

them to achieve success either at another football club or in a vocational career.

The Academy players in the Professional Development phase are full-time and are

registered on Scholarship contracts, as part of their all-round education the players complete an

academic education programme alongside their football commitments. Our players in the Youth

Development phase combine their club training programme with attendance at their own school,

this involves training evenings, weekends and during day release. The Foundation phase squads

training programmes take place after school and at weekends.

2.6 HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF FOOTBALL ACADEMY IN NIGERIA

Our Soccer Academy was established on December 15, 2008 to discover, develop and

expose young talented footballers aged 09-19 years realize their dreams and aspirations of

becoming professional football players and earn a living.
