Technology Philosophy in the Workplace
For the purposes of this assignment, I will be using my old high school as an example of
where I will be working. Pioneer High School’s mission is, “We ensure that all students develop
and demonstrate the skills necessary for success during and beyond high school,” and their
vision/goal is, “The collective staff of Pioneer High School is committed to creating and
maintaining a collaborative school culture that encourages and supports the academic, social and
emotional growth of all students.”
Digital citizenship plays a large role within the school not only for faculty, but also for
students. One of the largest concerns as an educator is maintaining confidentiality when handling
student data. Care must be taken to abide by FERPA guidelines, meaning sensitive data should
only remain on a closed server within the school. Such data should only be transmitted by a local
messaging system. In preparing students for the world of higher education and careers, we are
obliged to educate students on the proper form of digital communication. In a world for of
texting and emoticons, it is important that students understand that digital etiquette is something
to always be considered when communicating professionally. Additionally, students need to be
aware of the negative health effects that spending too much time with technology can bring.
Social media serves an opportunity for the school to represent itself, and for students to
have a hand in developing its digital presence. By adding a digital media class to the class list as
an extracurricular, students can develop the skills needed to collaborate and promote personal
digital projects. The main semester-long project for this class will be moderating multiple social
media accounts for the school, including such examples as Instagram and YouTube. Students can
utilize data sets such view time and interactions to create visual aids for trending topics and
content. A career in social media management is a very real opportunity for prepared modern
graduates, and their interest may even expand to include marketing.
Time will be invested into ensuring teachers are familiar with the operation of a multitude
of communication options to maintain a consistent professional connection between faculty and
student families. By introducing the FAMILIES | Talking Points app, teachers will be able to
communicate with families that do not have an effective grasp of the English language in real
time. Teachers will be expected to have all assignments visibly entered in Blackboard, allowing
for more efficient grading and increased speed at which students receive feedback on their
performance in the classroom. This method also keeps grades private from prying eyes, ensuring
students do not fear ostracization because of their performance.
The realm where funds need be invested into upgrading school technology is enhancing
the level of technology readily available to students. Smartboards should be available in every
classroom to allow for multiple means of representation when lessons are being held. Laptops
should be assigned to each student at the beginning of the school year. This way, students can
always be connected to the technological infrastructure of the school. These laptops should be
equipped with the standard set of Microsoft office tools but also programs that promote self-
regulation, such as Google Keep and Todoist. While website versions of these programs are
available, downloaded versions should be installed to ensure students always have access to
them.
While many educators may view technology as a distraction, the reality is that modern
technology offers innumerable benefits to the classroom and school at large. It is our role as
educators to stay informed about new technology as it becomes available to us to integrate into
our classrooms. Technology, when implemented properly, offers a wide range of benefits to our
student’s learning experience.
