Introduction
• Complementary and Integrative medicine is the use of alternative medicine
practices with traditional western medicine to improve a patient’s overall
wellness. The main concept of CIM is the idea behind whole-body wellness
which differs from the targeted solution mindset of western medicine. In this
lesson, we will cover examples of alternative medicine, the real-world effects
CIM has had on patients, ways to incorporate CIM, and review reputable
sources for information.

Integrative Medicine in Action
• Complementary and integrative medicine

• The benefits of combining alternative and
contemporary patient care have been
recognized and put to the test countless
times
• We see in studies like the Integrative
Medicine Primary Care Trial (IMPACT),
how patients' results were monitored over a
year with combining CAM
• Results showed substantial improvements
in their mental and physical health
• CAM uses a whole-body system approach

Integrative Medicine in Action Contd.
• In studies like Advancing the evidence for yoga as a
promising quality of life intervention in pediatric
populations with chronic illness: a call to action, we
see CIM at the forefront of preventative medicine
along with treatment therapy
• Yoga provides mental, physical, and spiritual benefits
and is being advocated for pediatric patients to have
access in schools and medical settings to self-manage
chronic illness symptoms
• Though more research is needed, we will continue to
see integrative medicine practices serve more and more
of a role in contemporary medical settings.
