UNIT NO.1
Introduction to Computer
Question No 03: Define the followings:
Computer:

Computer is an electronic machine which processes raw data (input) and convert it into information (Output).

Memory:

Memory is an electronic holding place. It holds data and instructions that can be accessed by CPU.

Software:

Software is the set of instructions given to the computer to perform a specific task.

Hard disk:

Hard disk is the permanent storage device of computer. It is also called hard drive.

Motherboard:

Motherboard is large circuit board in computer. All other components of computer are connected with it. It
is made up of silicon.

Processing Operation:

The operation in which a computer performs some actions on the data according to the instructions is known
as processing operation.
Example: Addition of two numbers.

Question No. 04: Differentiate between followings:

Data and Information:

Data Information
Data is the collection of facts and figures Processed data is called as information

Question No 5: Give short answers to the following questions:


1. Write five advantages of using computer.
 Speed: computer can perform billions of calculations in a fraction of second.
 Accuracy: Computers is almost 100% accurate and never make mistakes
 Storage: computer can store large amount of data.
 Versatility: A user can perform variety of tasks with computer like watching movie, play games
and make drawings etc.
 Diligence: computer can do things over and over again without getting bored.

2. What is hardware? Write the names of five hardware devices. Hardware:


Physical parts of computer that we can touch and feel are called hardware.
Five Hardware Devices:
Monitor, RAM, Motherboard, Hard disk, keyboard, Mouse
3. Write functions of the following keyboard keys:
a. Tab b. Esc c. Enter d. Shift e. Caps lock

Tab: Tab key is used to move the cursor more than one space at a time.
Esc Esc key is used to terminate any process in between
Enter  to execute commands
 to start a new line
Shift  Used to type capital letters
 Used to type symbols
Caps Lock Used to type capital letters

4. What does a processor do?


It process data efficiently and accurately. It converts data into meaningful information according to
the instructions given to it in the form of programs.

5. What is memory? Is it a temporary storage device?


 Memory is electronic holding place of data.
 It is also called as primary memory(RAM)
 Yes it is temporary storage device.
 It loses data when power is switched off.

6. Write a short note on hard disk.


 Hard disk is permanent storage device.
 It is also called hard drive.
 It is fixed inside system unit.
 It is reliable and durable storage device.

7. Write advantages of USB flash memory.


 It is portable because it is easy to carry.
 It is small and light in weight.
 It is reliable and durable storage device.
 It is easy to use with computer.
8. Explain different types of monitors.
CRT monitors  CRT monitors are heavier,
 Need more space
 Produce small amount of radiations.
LCD monitor  LCD monitors are light
 Do not need much space
 Do not produce radiations
Plasma Monitors  Plasma monitors are recent development and show more colours than
CRT and LCD monitors

9. What is modem? Explain its different types.

Modem: Modem is a device used to connect with other computers on the internet.
Types of modem:

Internal Modem External modem

10. Explain the output operation of a computer. Output Operation:
In this operation, the computer uses output devices to produce results of the processing. It may be
either displayed on the screen or printed on the paper. Audio output is produced by speakers of the
computer.

Q.NO.4: DEFINE THE FOLLOWINGS:


1. DESKTOP:
The main screen of Micro Soft Window is known as desktop. The desktop contains the icons
of different files and programs, so a user can easily access them.

2. FOLDER:
Folders are like envelops or drawers in which a user can place data. A folder can contain
files and even other folders. They are used to organize data.
3. START MENU:
The start button displays a list of items called Start Menu. It gives a complete control of the
computer under one menu.

4. A WINDOW:
Whenever you click on My Document, My Computer or Recycle Bin Icon it always brings
you a window on the screen. So in this ways we can say that a window is the basic building block of
Micro Soft Windows because everything opens in a separate window.

5. TASK BAR:
Task bar is placed at the bottom of the screen in the Micro Soft Windows. It includes Start
Button, Quick Launch Toolbar, Task buttons and Notification Area.

Q.NO.5: GIVE BRIEF ANSWERS TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:


i. Describe the steps of the Start up procedure of the Windows.
Answer:
a. Start your computer by pressing “power” button on the system box
b. Windows XP starts loading its files into the computer
c. After successfully loading, windows logs on and a welcome screen appears.
d. You can log on to computer by clicking user name and typing password in the text box.
e. Windows Desktop screen appears.

ii. What is the Start menu?


Answer:
The start button displays a list of items called Start Menu. It gives a complete control of the
computer under one menu. When a user clicks the start button , a menu appears that lets the user
easily access most useful items on the computer.

iii. Describe the function of the Notification area.


Answer:
It shows the different notifications of the events that occurs in the windows. It also
displays time and different program icons such as Volume Control, Windows Firewall and
Anti-Virus, etc. It also shows temporary icons such as USB device and printing etc.

iv. How many ways are there to open a window/program in Windows?


Answer:
There are three different ways to open a window/program in Windows:
a. From Desktop:
 Double click on the icon of your desired program/window.
 The program/window appears on the screen.
b. From Start Menu:
 Click start button
 Start menu appears
 Point to your desired program/window
 And then click on it
 The program/window appears on the screen.
c. From Run Command:
 Click start button
 Start menu appears
 Click Run
 Run dialogue box appears
 Type the program name and path here
 Click ok
 The program/window appears on the screen.
v. What is a Drive?
Answer:
The storage area in any storage device is known as drive. Drives are named by a
letter followed by a colon (such as C:). The storage device can be floppy disk, a CD/DVD, a
Hard Disk and a USB flash memory.

vi. What is a file? Write the parts of a file with an example.


Answer:
A file is a collection of data that is stored in a computer. There are different types of
files such as text files, graphic files and sound files and program files, etc.
A file consists of two parts: name and type. Suppose you want to save the picture of
your friend and give it a name “Ali”. Computer will save it as Ali.jpg.
(Here Ali is the name of file whereas .jpg is file extension.)

vii. How can a user create a folder using right click menu?
Answer:
 Right click anywhere on the desktop.
 Right click menu appears.
 Move mouse over NEW
 Click he folder option
 The new folder appears displaying the temporary name (New Folder)
 Type a name of the new folder for example: Umar and press enter
 A folder with the name of Umar has been created on the desktop.
viii. What is the importance of folders? Explain briefly with an example.
Answer:
Suppose Ali is looking for his Math book from a pile of books. He will have to shift
through the pile of books to find Math book. The same thing can be happen if someone does
not use folders to store data. Now Ali can arrange the books in the bookshelves like:

 Shelf 1: Islamiyat Books


 Shelf 2: Urdu Books
 Shelf 3: English Books
 Shelf 4: Math Books
 Shelf 5: Science Books

When Ali wants to look for a particular book, it is now easier to find because they
have been organized into several categories. Similarly, data in a computer can be organized
in the same way with the help of folders. Several folders can be created in the computer. For
example:

 Islamiyat folder contains files related to Islamiyat


 Math folder contains files related to Mathematics
 English folder contains files related to English
 Computer folder contains files related to Computer
 Science folder contains files related to Science

ix. Write the names of five different parts of window?


Answer:
1. Title Bar
2. Menu Bar
3. Tool Bar
4. Status Bar
5. Scroll Bar

x. What are icons? Write names of the desktop icons.


Answer:
Icons are small images that represent different types of programs and files. Desktop
contains different types of icons. Following are the main four icons of the desktop:
 My Documents
 My Computer
 Recycle Bin
 Internet Explorer
