■ OILY BILGE SEPARATOR

5. FUNCTION
5.1 Oily water flows into the oily bilge separator through the oily water inlet connection.

5.2 Oily water flows into the body starts separating oil by the difference of specific gravity by a
static pressure system and then floated oil and accumulated oil gathers in the upper round
plate remaining minute particles of oily water pass through the pallring and urethane
coalescer in sequence.

5.3 When Oil Level Detector(O.L.D) detects oil in the upper hemispheric round plate, the pump is
stopped by the oil discharge valve at the same time the backwashing process starts and
then the oil is discharged by fresh water pressure.

5.4 The ultra minute oil and corrupt component parts can be removed by the 2nd coalescer
filter. Separated water oil density is with under 5/15ppm, The water can be discharged to
overboard.

5.5 Life time of coalescer filter in the 2nd stage can be extended if you open the upper
manual air vent and backwashing valve and backwash while stopping.

5.6 The accumulated oil separated by specific gravity in the bilge holding tank should not be
treated through the oily bilge separator, but should be transferred directly to a separated
oil tank. When it is transferred directly, it helps to reduce maintenance costs.

5.7 In case of being over 30PPM or high PPM, it does not pass through the 2nd chamber and
is directly discharged to the bilge holding tank. This prevents from dirtying and damaging
the filter of 2nd chamber, and helps you reduce the maintenance cost.

5) Clean the Oil Level Detector. (Connect wires according to the cable numbers when
joining.)

8.3 Annual Maintenance

1) Inspect each valve (safety valve, piston valve, check valve, globe valve, solenoid valve).
2) Inspect pump. Replace with new parts if necessary.
3) Inspect bolts and screws.
4) Inspect coalescer filter. Pay attention to any internal filter contamination when the
pressure inside the oily bilge separator rises.

8.4 Maintenance For Every 2 Years

1) Overhaul and clean inside of the equipment.
* Clean the system by 「Overhaul and Cleaning(8.5)」 before overhauling
2) Test the function of each sensor part (oil level detector, solenoid valve, etc.)
3) Inspect coalescer filter and check other filters.

The coalescer filter serves to maintain the treated water at 5/15ppm or below by
removing ultra-fine particle oil ingredients and is configured to be cleaned by the
backwashing system which is operated periodically during operation. However, If it is used
for a long time or when the internal pressure of the equipment (vessel) rises remarkably,
or if the bilge alarm device continues to sound high ppm alarms of 5/15 ppm or higher,
then check it by opening and consider exchanging the filter with a new one.

Exchange coalescer filter in 2nd stage Emulsion Treatment Unit.
In case of exchanging filter, open the upper cover and pull out the old one.

The coalescer filter is located in the lower part of 1st chamber(P.S.U) and inside 2nd
chamber(E.T.U). It is recommended that filter cleaning and replacement cycle be between 1
and 1.5 years. However, if the pressure inside the vessel increases significantly due to
excessive inflow of foreign matters or other reasons, or when the ppm of the bilge alarm
device continues to exceed 5/15 ppm, consider the replacement of the coalescer filter with
a new one. When replacing the filter, please use a genuine filter as we are not responsible
for any problems or performance caused by using non-genuine parts. Therefore, we
recommend that you use a genuine filter only.
C AUTIO N
It is prohibited that alien substances and discharged water from other tanks flow into the vessel’s
bilge holding tank. (ex.: chemicals, surfactant detergent, soot, sewage, sludge, grey water, mud,
rust particles, alien substances and water containing sulfur etc.)
In case that these substances flow into the bilge holding tank, it may corrode inside of the tank,
damage and dirty the filter, and increase PPM. This causes troubles in the oily water separator’s
normal operation, therefore please ensure the above-mentioned.

4. THE MEASURING PRINCIPLE OF OIL CONCENTRATION
By the infrared light penetrating the sampling water which ingresses into the sensing module, it
calculates the ratio of scattered light and transmitted light, then it displays the oil concentration
on the monitor by PPM.
If the oil concentration exceeds 15ppm, an alarm relay 1, 2 and valve1, 2 operate and an
alarm1, 2 indicating lamp(Red) is on the front panel.
This alarm is set to work the relay(RL1, RL2) from the zero-to-60sec delay timer(adjustable).
The alarm time delay of the 15ppm alarm is "zero" seconds.

5. INSTALLATION AND ADJUSTMENT

5.1 Electrical Connections

The power cable can be connected into the terminal block under the main board thru the cable
gland which is located under the monitor.

1) POWER (T/B #1,2,3) - for AC Power source and earth

3-way valve to the left in the direction in which the sample water is input, and return to
normal. The LED will light in green.

7) Flow Switch IN/OUT (T/B #22~25) - Flow switch signal input/output

By receiving the flow switch signal, it displays the sampling water's flow status on the
monitor. Also when it is connected to #24 and 25 terminal, the sampling water flow can be
checked outside.

5.2 Sources of Electricity of The Main Board

When the source of electricity(terminal 1 and 2) is supplied to the bilge alarm, the
power(ON) lamp at the bottom of display monitor is lighted. For further details of the lamp,
please refer to 「14. ADDITIONAL NOTICE」.

5.3 "Zero" Check And Calibration

Zero setting has been already adjusted at the factory. Alarm occurrence set value is adjusted
to 15ppm (If necessary, 15 ppm or less can be adjusted).
1) "ZERO" can be checked by Fresh water easily by ship's personnel (drinking water should
be used as it may not be possible to adjust the zero point when using fresh water from
the ship).

7
■ BILGE ALARM
2) To check 15ppm alarm operation, open the top cover of the sensing module and put
water mixed with oil or similar water or high ppm alarm test kit provided by
manufacturer and check whether the ppm rises and if an alarm occurs at 15ppm. After
testing 15ppm, clean the inside of the sensing module 2-3 times, supply drinking water
and check "0". If the ppm does not drop to "0", repeat the cleaning process again
according to the maintenance guidelines of 「7.2」 Calibration of accuracy should be
carried out by the person authorized by the manufacturer or by the manufacturer in
accordance with IMO regulations.
※ The validity of calibration certificates should be checked at IOPP annual/intermediate/renewal
surveys. The accuracy of 15 ppm bilge alarms is to be checked by calibration and testing of
the equipment conducted by a manufacturer or persons authorized by the manufacturer and
should be done at intervals not exceeding five years or within the term specified in the
manufacturer's instructions, whichever is shorter. Alternatively the unit may be replaced by a
calibrated 15 ppm bilge alarm. The calibration certificate for the 15 ppm bilge alarm, certifying
the date of the last calibration check, should be retained on board for inspection purposes. The
accuracy checks can only be done by the manufacturer or persons authorized by the
manufacturer."(MEPC 70/17/4.2.11).
※ Initial date of calibration certificate will be at the time of delivery.

5.4 Initial Setting

The factory setting of this product is 5/15ppm, the delay time is 0 sec, and the signal
output for external recorder is 4 ~ 20mA.
5.5 Program Setting & Data Logger
- This equipment has a built in memory card and can save data for 18 months.
(Data saves in every 1 second)
- When the storage space of the memory card is full, the records will automatically be over
written after 18 months.
- The clock is factory set for GMT(Greenwich Mean Time)
- The user can search the operation history (operation and alarm occurrence status) of the
oily water separator in the display screen.
- For further details of program setting and searching data, please refer to 「9. HOW TO SET
PROGRAM AND SEARCH DATA」 and 「10. HOW TO USE DATA LOGGER」.

Caution
① The power must be turned off before moving the memory card and other components built into
the unit (we recommend you do not remove the memory card unless it is absolutely necessary).
② In case of insert the memory card again, pins of memory card should be inserted back to the
former place precisely. If not, “FLASH CHECK ERROR" will be shown on the LCD monitor.
(Warranty will not be available for problems related to removing and inserting the memory card.)
③ Remind vessel engineers to routinely review the stored data available through the LCD display
ensuring that the data matches the information recorded in the ORB and actual OWS operations.

6. OPERATION
6.1 Turn on the power and check the indicator lamp.
6.2 After the display monitor is booted up, confirm the start-up screen appears.
6.3 Confirm if there's no trouble in monitor, memory card, GMT and lamp. (Error sign, lamp status and
etc.)
※ If there's a trouble in memory card, the "FLASH CHECK ERROR" sign is shown on the
display monitor. During this, the AL1, AL2 lamps are red-lighted regardless of PPM and the
alarm sounds, also data is not stored.
6.4 Change over the 3-way valve handle to sampling(start & running) mode.
6.5 Start the oily water separator or pump, and confirm if the sampling water ingresses normally.
(Visually check the lamp status at the bottom of monitor and sampling water discharge at an
exit. For further details of the lamp, please refer 「14. ADDITIONAL NOTICE」)
6.6 Confirm the alarm sounds by the range over and 3WAY VALVE HANDLE POSITION
under 5/15 PPM, and 3-way piston valve(Automatic START&RUNNING STOP
Stopping Device Valve) is working.
6.7 After operation, turn off the power after maintenance
by referring to 「7. MAINTENANCE」.
6.8 Be sure to change over the 3-way valve handle to
cleaning(stop) mode.

7. MAINTENANCE
To maintain normal operation and accurate measurement condition, the unit should be cleaned
and checked as follows
7.1 Turn off the sources of electricity before maintenance or check.
7.2 Clean inside of the sample tube of the sensing module often with the cleaning brush and
clean water or washing chemical before and after use. To use cleaning chemical and hot
water would be more effective. (Using cleaning kitchen detergent and hot water for washing
will increase the cleaning effect.) If it's not cleaned for long time, residues are stuck inside
the sample tube. This may lead to the unavailability of PPM sensing and causing high PPM,
therefore normal operation of the unit may not be available.
7.3 Fill up the sampling tube with clean(drinking) water after cleaning, turn it ON, and zero
check (0ppm±5ppm)
7.4 Keep clean the limit switch area, which is the contact point with 3-way valve.
(Limit switch area has a magnetic material, so it is easy to collect foreign substance.)
7.5 When stopping it, be sure to turn the 3-way valve handle to right side(stop position).
7.6 Keep the power of the bilge alarm turned on at least 12 hours per month, in order to
prevent discharge of the rechargeable backup battery.
(When the voltage is under 2.5V after charging, it needs to be replaced.)
7.7 In case that it stops for long period, clean inside of the unit as the above mentioned and
completely remove water, then dry and keep it clean.
