CONTENT STANDARD
The learners demonstrate understanding of the effects of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
PERFORMANCE STANDARD
The learners should design an emergency and preparedness plan and kit.
LEARNING COMPETENCY
I. OBJECTIVES
a. Enumerate what to do before, during and after an earthquake.
b. Create a poster showing safety precautions before and after an earthquake.
c. Relate disaster preparedness and proper response during emergency situations in
preserving lives by role playing.

Ask :
What are the different examples of disasters?
What are the different ways to survive a disaster?
3. Presentation
Show actual objects such as first-aid kit, instant food items (noodles, canned goods, biscuits
etc.) battery operated flashlight, radio
Health IV: Relate disaster preparedness and proper response during emergency situations in
preserving lives. (across)
The teacher will show pictures about proper response during an emergency.
IV. ACTIVITY
1. Let the pupils watch a video about safety precautions before, during and after an
earthquake. Set standards for viewing.
2. Group Activity after watching the video.
Group A: Graphic Organizer – Safety Precaution before, during and after
earthquake or volcanic eruption.
The students will list down safety precautions of before, during and after an emergency.
SAFETY PRECAUSIONS
BEFORE DURING AFTER
a. “TOGETHER WORK PEOPLE WHEN WORKS SAFETY” – Safety works when people
work together
b. “DOES NOT SAFETY INSTANTLY YOU COME CONSISTENTLY SHOULD IT
IMPLEMENT – Safety does not come instantly; you should implement it consistently.
V. ANALYSIS
REPORTING - The students will report their output.
Explore on the following:
a. What is the video all about?
b. Are these safety precautions important? Why?
c. Is your school and barangay having programs and activities related to disaster
preparedness?
d. How can these programs and activities help preserve lives and safety of the
community?

VI. ABSTRACTION
Background Information:
Most volcanoes around the world are located at special zones that are located around the
Pacific Ocean. It is commonly known as the Pacific Ring of Fire. It is where the most
distractive volcanoes are located.
Under the volcanoes are hot molten rocks called magma. They are stored in a large pool under
the earth's surface known as magma chamber. These magmas contain dissolved gases. With
extreme heat and pressure on them, magmas rise to the
surface to erupt. Eruption can be quiet or violent and destructive.

If the magma is a thin fluid, the gases from the rising magma can escape easily. The lava flows
freely out of the vent down to its slopes releasing pressure evenly and constantly. Since
pressure doesn't build up, violent explosions do not occur. if the magma is thick and pasty, the
gases in the magma cannot move freely but will build up great pressure. Due to the high level
of pressure, violent eruption happens. The gases escape violently and throw out great masses
of solid hot rock as well as lava, dust, ashes and clouds of gas. There are volcanoes which
erupt violently because of the acidic lava they produce. Acidic lava cools very quickly upon
contact with the air. This tends to block the volcanic vent and block the escape of pressure.
When the pressure is high it blows away the lava that blocks the vent producing an explosive
eruption.
The movement of magma under the earth's crust cause earthquake. The magma
pushes the rocks aside as it moves underground. The rocks break as they are
moved, releasing seismic energy which we call earthquake. Explosive eruption of
volcanoes cause earthquakes too because of the high pressure build up.
Considering the above information, the following are safety precaution measure before,
during and after earthquake and volcanic eruption.
FOLLOW UP QUESTION:
a. Based on our activities and from our discussion, what do we need to do before,
during and after an earthquake?
b. Why is it important to follow these safety precautions?

VII. APPLICATION
GROUP I GROUP II
Through a drawing/poster present the Present through a creative role playing
safety precautions before during and after about what to do before during and
a volcanic eruption. after an earthquake.
The teacher will give feedback about the presentation of every group.
VIII. GENERALIZATION
a. What are the safety precautions before, during and after an earthquake?
b. What are the safety precautions before, during and after a volcanic eruption?
c. Why is it important to follow these safety precautions?
IX. EVALUATION
Draw 😊 if the statement shows safety precautions before, during and after an earthquake or
volcanic eruption and ☹ if it is not.
X. ASSIGNMENT
