COURSE CONTENT
Course deals with the nature of identity, as well as the factors and forces that affect the
development and maintenance of personal identity.
Course is divided into three major parts: First part seeks to understand the construct of self
from various disciplinary perspectives: Philosophy, Sociology, Anthropology, and
Psychology.Second part explores some of the aspects that make up the self, such as the
biological and material, including the recent Digital self. The third and final part identifies
three areas of concern for young students learning, goal setting, and management of stress. It
thus also provides practical application of the concepts discussed in this course that will enable
students to have a hands-on experience of developing self-help plans for self- regulated
learning, goal setting, and self appreciation and self care.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course deals with the nature of identity, it intends to facilitate exploration of the issues and
concerns regarding self and identity to arrive at a better understanding of one’s self. It strives
to meet this goal by stressing integration of personal with academic contextualizing matters
discussed in the classroom, and everyday experiences of students that will generate
appreciation of the learning process, and develop reflective attitude while enabling them to
manage and improve themselves, in attaining a good quality of life.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. Understand not only the theoretical underpinnings of self, but also to manage and care
for different aspects of self.
2. Acquire new skills and learnings for better managing one’s self and behaviors.
3. Identify and develop positive concepts of students and develop reflective values for
everyday purposes.
4. Gain new skills for practical application of concepts, and make them better individuals.
5. Realized the importance of self in developing self-confidence and motivations and
helped them develop their skills, as well as their interpersonal relationship towards
others.
6. Envisage deeper understanding of individual differences and perspectives.
7. Express ways and intentions towards reaching student goals, in utilizing their strength
and developing their weaknesses.

COURSE OUTLINE
Competency: At the end of the semester, students will assess themselves from various
perspectives leading to the emergence of one’s self and identity, grasp a better understanding
of their personality, self and identity, along with the knowledge of the influential forces which
impact on these such as gender, culture, family and relationships and demonstrate basic skills
in managing the self and identity.
Outcome:
1. Demonstrate in depth understanding of the self, and realize self-importance.
2. Exhibit comprehensive knowledge of greater responsibilities, self-help plans, and self-
regulated learning.
3. Demonstrate self and social responsibility
4. Explore and respect different aspects of individual differences.
5. Analyze self of individual functioning realizing student’s strength, goal setting and
managing stress.
6. Acquire skills for better managing of one’s self behavior, values, and identified their needs
as an individual
7. Provide a more practical application of concept that enables them to realize full potential
and envisage future careers.

UNDERSTANDING SELF
Sum total of people`s conscious perception of their identity as distinct from
others, it is static, but continue to develop and change.
It is thinking about what is involve in being, and what distinguishes you from
an object.
IMPORTANCE:
Self-understanding recognized as key competency for individual to function
effectively.
Influences individual ability to make decision about self.
Equips individual with an effective career, life choice, ability to lead, guide,
and inspire others.

SELF CONCEPT - Set of beliefs that we hold about who we are, it is about his/her
own personal attributes.
It’s a perception about who we are, what we think, what we ought to be, and
would like to be.
It`s is component is IDEAL SELF - A representation of what we would
ideally want to possess.
Has positive, and negative self- assessments in physical, emotional, intellectual,
and functional dimension s of change.

POSITIVE SELF CONCEPT - Believe in themselves, has confident with the ability
to solve problems, make decision, feel equal for others have respect for themselves and
others, and realistic.
SELF IDENTITY - What sets one person apart as unique individual, it includes
person`s name, identity, family, status, occupation, and roles.
This begins to develop during childhood, and is constantly reinforced and modified
throughout life.
SELF ESTEEM - Sense of giving and receiving love, and being respected by others.

Individual constructions of the personal self-illustrating how different aspects are situated
relative to one another and the importance of each relative to the other.
