Film Chosen: Ordinaryo Pamilya

Film Theory: Structuralist Film Theory

“Ordinaryo Pamilya” was the film I chose in order to discuss how well it analyzes
Structuralist Film Theory out of all the other film theories there are. After watching
the film directed by Eduardo W. Roy, I noticed the various topics and scenarios that
were being brought up by the director regarding real life situations when it comes to
poverty and how people live upon it. With the definition of the Structuralist Film
theory, the film varies different codes and conventions that aims to instill through
complex and situational visuals and emotions on the audience that watch movies. It
seeks to demonstrate to the viewers how to perceive, comprehend, and connect to a
movie's smallest nuances. I believe that the film mentioned is one of the many
Filipino films out there that lies under Structuralist Film theory as it demonstrates the
struggles of two young parents who rely only on crimes such as theft to meet their
requirements each day as they reside on streets. This movie displayed us on how
our society is evolving while also educating us on the variety of social challenges
that our nation faces. The audience was able to sympathize with Jane, the main
character, as she dealt with a series of devastating and upsetting complex situations,
from the overall losing her baby portion to the traumatic sequences in the police
station where she was sexually molested. There were also certain parts of the film
where her emotions were a bit blank yet there is a sense of worry and anxiety as the
viewers watch it. The audience were definitely more open and educated about the
possibilities and experiences one can have when living in the streets, or just in
general how dangerous it can be with our society constantly changing everyday.
Makes them wonder if it is ever safe to go outside alone knowing that there’s people
performing crimes every time. The film opened up on triggering topics which is why it
falls under the aforementioned theory. It manages to capture viewers' attention and
piques their curiosity, causing them to feel connected to the film's themes and—most
often—grimacing scenes, as well as the actor's representation of a protagonist, in
order to empathize with themselves, their lives, and their daily lifestyles (such as how
the movie depicts the way of life of Jane and Aries). On the topic about Structuralist
Film theory, another movie that I have watched that may also lie under the said
theory is “Seven Sundays”. The film was directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina who also
directed other films that can be under the said theory. TThe focus of the film is on
how family distance may influence relationships and bonds. I chose this movie as
another reference because of the subtle messages it had, whether they came from
the characters' portrayals of how they were viewed as children or how they
communicated their emotions and concerns in a way that the viewers could identify
with. The movie touched viewers' emotions and inspired individuals to be more
vulnerable when it comes to families because it depicts family relationships in an
empathetic way.
