Field Trip

Field trips provide students with hands-on, real-world experiences to supplement classroom learning. They involve planning activities for students at an off-site location. Effective field trips are well-organized, provide instructional guidance, and include post-trip reflection. Field trips offer advantages like enriching lessons with firsthand experiences and breaking up classroom routines, but require careful planning and safety precautions.

FIELD TRIP
INTRODUCTION
A Field trip is especially planned for its possible contribution to the objectives
of the curriculum, course, project, lesson or other unit of instructions. It is one of the
most realistic educational procedures and the oldest method of teaching.

DEFINATION
A Field trip, also called as an observational visit, is defined as “an educational
procedure, by which the students obtain first-hand information by observing places,
objects, phenomena or activities and processes in their natural setting to further
learning”.

Field trip forms a concrete learning experience in a real situation which has
been undertaken with a specific purpose.

PURPOSES
1. To provide real life situations for first hand information.
2. To supplement class room instructions to secure definite information for specific
lessons.
3. To serve as a pre view of a lesson and gather instructional materials.
4. To verify previous information, class discussion & to conclude individual
experiments.
5. To create teaching situation for cultivating observation, keenness and discovery.
6. To serve as a means to develop positive attitudes, values and specific skills.

ORGANIZATION OF A FIELD TRIP

Organization of a field trip includes the following phases:-

A. Preplanning /Pre- trip stage

B. Actual conduct of the trip / Trip stage
C. Evaluation phase \ Post –trip stage

A. PREPLANNING :-
This stage involves two major components :- a. Administration

b. Instruction

2
a. Administration:- It involves the entire step taken by the field organizer to
arrange the field trip. It includes:-
 Securing permission from appropriate administration.
 Organizing transportation to and from the field trip location.
 Containing the field trip location to verify the schedule and activities.
 Obtaining signed permission slips from parents who are attending the field
trip.
b. Instruction : - It involves the preparing of the participants for the field trip.
 To reduce the anxiety about the field trip, make participants feel comfortable
and safe at the location.
 Provide participants with various exposures to the field trip site as a pre-trip
instruction.
 Exposure involves the showing of photograph ,drawing or video tapes of the
site to be visited.
 Instruction about safety and behavior rules andexpectations from
participants should be discussed.
 Give verbal clues regarding what to look for during their field trip ,and
educational goals of the trip.
 Divide the participants into groups and assign the work for each group.

B. ACTUAL CONDUCT OF THE TRIP \TRIP STAGE :-

Two important components of in this stage are the role of participants
and the role of the organizer.
a. Role of the participants :-
 The agenda for a field trip starts with a brief amount of free time for
participants to explore the field trip site on their own.
 The organizer or the tour leader can point out specific items that relate to
the educational goals of the trip.
 This is the opportunity for participants to ask any questions that may have
developed during their exploration time .
 Work with pre assigned group activity and complete the activity . The work
sheet should clearly relate to the educational goals of the field trip.
b. Role of the Organizer :-
 Monitoring of the participants and actively engage in teaching activities.
 Use the different teaching approaches than those used in traditional
classroom setting.
 Interact with participants to answer the question of the participants .
 Organizer should functions as facilitator or guide rather than director.
 Increase the student’s interest and learning by playing an active role
rather than a positive role during the field trip.

C. EVALUATION PHASE /POST- TRIP STAGE :-
The final stage is the post –trip stage .It involves debriefing and culminating
activity .

A .Debriefing;-

 Participants are encouraged to share and discuss their experience

during the field trip .It includes the sharing and discussing data or
results of assigned activities as well as sharing feelings about specific
aspects of the trip.
 The participants should be given an opportunity to identify and discuss
problems encountered during the field trip.
B . Culminating activity :-
 It should give participants an opportunity to apply the content of
knowledge they gained during the field trip.
 Culminating activities should help learners tie together content they
covered in regular educational programme sessions and content
learned during the field trip.
 Both debriefing and culminating activity should occur as soon after the trip
as possible

ADVANTAGES :-
1. Field trips supplement and enrich curriculum experiences.
2. They provide first hand experiences.
3. They break the monotony of classroom lectures, and add spice to the teaching of
various subjects
4. They offer varied types of experiences to the students
5. They provide accurate information about objects, processes and systems in their
real settings
6. They involve all senses while learning
7. They develop social skills among the students
8. They are more meaningful and permit easier transfer of learning
9. Ideals learnt in classroom can be better fixed in mind in actual situations
10. Outdoors, students are able to work with large size materials . It can be used for
review and drill.

DISADVANTAGES :-
1. Field trip is time consuming
2. Careful planning is required

4
3. Many parties to be involved, cooperation, coordination of various agencies
required.
4. Transportation may be problem.
5. Since the students are going out of school \ college premises it are risky ,safety
precautions essentials
SUMMARY :-
Educational field trips are a part of the curriculum for many subject areas and
with different age groups. The purpose of the field trip is generally to remove
students from their normal, everyday, classroom setting and put them into an
environment that enables them to have experiences.

CONCLUSION :-
Field trip is an effective method for health promotion and education where we
learn through direct experience in real situation. Hence efforts should be given by
the educational institutions in proper planning , organizing to make field trip more
interesting ,enjoyable so that the predetermined goal can be achieved.
