Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion

States that: For every ACTION there is an EQUAL and opposite REACTION

In other words FORCES EXIST IN PAIRS (ACTION / REACTION PAIRS)

You Push an Object it Pushes you back

You Pull an Object it Pulls you back

𝑭𝑨𝒐𝒏𝑩 = −𝑭𝑩𝒐𝒏𝑨 (Forces are equal BUT Opposite and act on different objects)

These are not ‘The Balanced’ forces because they are acting on different objects

Action/Reaction Pairs are of the same type i.e.

 Contact forces pair up with other Contact Forces

 Non-Contact forces pair up with another Non-Contact Force of the same kind i.e. Gravitational with
Gravitational etc.

Using Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion

Direct Interactions (Physical Contact) give rise to Contact Forces

Non-Direct Interactions (no contact) give rise to Non-Contact Forces

Steps:

1. What is the object interacting with?

a. By Contact and

b. Non-Contact

1. Each Interactions gives rise to an Action Reaction Pair.

2. Determine the Action Reaction Pairs for each Interaction.

3. Only consider forces acting ON the object NOT by the object to draw a Free Body Diagram.

Identifying Action Reaction Pairs Rule

Action: Object A exerts a force on Object B Reaction: Object B exerts a force on Object A

Activity

c. For each action there is an equal and opposite reaction

2. Whenever an object exerts a force on another object, the second object exerts a force of the same magnitude,
but in the opposite direction to that of the first object.
