The Case of Leticia

Dysfunction
1. "She doesn't know how to cook, like 'yung ginataan na masarap nyang ginagawa, di na
nya alam. Kung pano yung ingredients.
2. Activities of daily living became more and more difficult for Leticia. "Binigyan namin sya
ng yaya. Even her motor skills were fleeting. Sometimes bindi na nya alam humawak ng
kutsara tinidor. Yung [dapat] automatic. Yung kanin nasa tinidor.
3. "That was the time na absolutely hindi na sya nakakatayo. Hindi na rin nagsasalita, during
the time she was bedridden." Now unable to eat on her own, Leticia had to be given a
nasogastric tube, where food could be given straight to her stomach
Distress
1. She would often forget the right word for something, "Hindi na nya maalala, "ano na nga
ito?" This was frustrating for her, and she would often remark on her own forgetfulness.
"Ang patal ko na, " she would say.
2. Nag-aaway sila ng nanay ko. She will explain herself pero minsan mali mga explanations
niya.
3. Leticia would argue with the guard- "Sinisigawan niya. Kawawa yung guwardiya." By this
time, her personality had become argumentative. "'Nakikipag-away [siya] kahit na kanino.
4. Sabi ko parang nag- imagine ka ba? Nagdadart nanaman ung eyes niya. She was really
afraid . Sabi ko, nag-imagine si mama."
5. "Ang talagang weird... sabi nya sakin na ang father ko daw ay may babae, " Evelyn
confided. "My father is a very religious person. Vi once wala syang ganyan. I know my
father. He's a very strict guy .... He belongs to a group of joggers, may kasama din sya
dun na matanda.... Apparently pinagselosan.

Deviance
1. Paranoia was the first thing that stood out. One of the earliest incidents in Evelyn's memory
was when the family took a trip to an amusement park outside of Manila. It was relatively
early, and everyone else was still having fun, when Leticia began trying to convince her
daughter that they should go home. "Nagmamadali siya umuwi. 'Alis na tayo, uwi na tayo.
' May sinasabi siyang about something na nakakatakot or something”.
2. Pagbalik nya nagkekwento siya. May aswang daw sa ilalaim ng kabilang bahay. It's an old
house. Meron talagang silong yon. It's like a storage space. Meron daw sa ibaba. [It had]
wide eyes. Parang bata daw.
Dangerousness
1. Nagsaing sya once na walang tubig... Dun nagalit ung tatay ko kasi susunugin daw niya
ung bahay.
2. "One time, nawala ang nanay ko. She had a habit of going out. Nakaligtaan siya ng
kanyang yaya.. She had left the house a little before noon. "Pagdating ng hapon, hindi pa
rin namin mahanap."
3. Once, she was standing on a built-in concrete bench near the wall of the house's perimeter
fence, but couldn't get back down. It started raining. "She was soaked! [She was there]
the whole day! 'Yun na 'yung nagsimula na talagang... she had infections.
