A. General
The Air Transport Association (ATA) numbering system is used. The three element
ATA code number is affixed to the lower right-hand corner of each page. The first
number (71) identifies and locates the illustrations within the Airframe Engine chapter.
The second number (11) designates the Engine Cowling section, and the third (13)
number designates the unit or specific part.

C. Manual Oraanlzatlon
This component maintenance manual (CMM) Is organized In accordance with ATA 100
Specification. The major topics are Description and Operation, Testing and Fault
Isolation, Disassembly, Cleaning, Check, Repair, Assembly and Storage, Fits and
Clearances, Special Tools Fixtures and Equipment, and Illustrated Parts List. A table
of contents is provided in the front matter of the manual.
D. Revision Service
Revision pages will be identified on the List of Effective Pages by revision date. On
each page the revision area is indicated by a revision bar or letter “R’in the left margin.
Temporary revisions will not be issued. If changes are required to an existing revision,
the entire manual will be reissued.

(3) This CMM provides verified producers to enable a shop mechanic to restore a
component to serviceable condition. Each of the major topic sections in this CMM
opens with a brief statement of the suject matter to be covered. Specific
procedures are the given, usably with a reference to a related subject topic (i.e.,
Assembly procedures may reference Cleaning procedures).
Specifically, the user will begin with either a task or check procedure to determine
the amount of disassembly or repair necessary, proceed with the necessary
operation, and restore the component to serviceable status. The IPL provides a
detailed breakdown of the replaceable parts as wall as an exploded illustration to
facilitate the identification and location of components. Verification dates for
procedures in this CMM are as follows:
Abbreviations, Acronyms, and unit symbols used in this manual are listed below.
Abbreviations found in the IPL are listed in the introduction to that section. Note that
otherwise specified, all weights and measurements in this manual are in English
standard units, followed by the equivalent metric unit in parentheses.
A. Description
The H245-3, H245-5, H245-7 AND H245-9 cowling panel latch assemblies,
illustrated in Figure 1, provide a quick-release positive lock for engine cowling
panels. Each configuration primarily consists of a hook assembly and a handle,
which are linked together with a rivet. The handle contains a trigger and indicator
assembly. Latch assembly configurations H245-5, H245-7 and H245-9
incorporate a latch safety. The latch assemblies are designed to be mounted
flush with the cowling panel to minimize air drag and to have dual locking features
for safety. The primary lock is the engagement of the hook assembly with the
panel mating pin, and the secondary lock is the engagement of the hook-up pin in
the hook assembly slot when the handle is fully closed.
6. Operation
The H245-3 latch assembly is unlocked by inserting an opening tool into the
trigger tool slot and pivoting the trigger and indicator assembly outward
(counterclockwise in Figure 1). Doing so disengages the hook assembly slot from
the hook-up pin. The spring-loaded latch assembly then opens to the full travel
position, causing the hook assembly to slide forward, out of the engaged position,
to unlock and disengage the hook from the panel mating pin. The indicator
assembly snaps closed, locking the hook-up pin in the hook assembly slot, when
the handle is returned to a position flush with the cowling panel.
The H2455, H245-7 and H245-9 latch assemblies operate in exactly the
same manner as the H245-3 latch, except that each configuration
incorporates a latch safety. The latch safety prevents latch closure should
the hook assembly fail to engage the hook-up pin.
The H245-7 and H245-9 latch assemblies provides a more effective latch
safety assembly than does the H245-5 latch assembly. Instructions are also
contained in this manual to upgrade the H245-7 latch assembly to a H245-9
assembly by replacing the trigger and indicator assembly.

Physical Characteristics
A. General
Test equipment and materials required to perform function test and Fault Isolation
procedures are listed in Table 2. Equivalent equipment and material may be
substituted for listed items.
C. Functional Test
(1) Insert opening tool in trigger tool slot. Rotate trigger so that indicator assembly
flag is 0.155 inch (3.9 mm) from the handle surface. Observe the following:
(a) The hook-up pin should remain engage with the hook assembly.
(b) The latch assembly should close and lock when pressure applied to the
opening tool is removed
(2) Rotate trigger until the hook assembly disengages from the hook-up pin.
Remove the opening tool and observe the following:
(a) The latch assembly should actuate to the full travel position, as
illustrated in Figure 2.
(b) The hook assembly should move forward a minimum of 0.40 inches
(10.2 mm) to disengage from the cowling panel mating pin.
(3) Press handle and hook assembly together until the hook assembly contacts
the handle stop. Observe the following:
(b) Movement between the handle stops and hook assembly should not
exceed 0.005 inch (0.13 mm).
(4) On the H245-5, H245-7 and H245-9 latch assembly configurations, operate
the latch safety assembly against the spring force several times.
Observe the following:
(b) The latch safety assembly should contact the handle when the hook
assembly is not engage with the hook-up pin to prevent operation of the
latch assembly to the locked position.
(c) Operation of the latch safety assembly fully against the spring pressure
should permit closing and locking of the latch assembly.
