1. Description and Operation

A. Description

The H245-3, H245-5, H245-7 AND H245-9 cowling panel latch assemblies,
illustrated in Figure 1, provide a quick-release positive lock for engine cowling
panels. Each configuration primarily consists of a hook assembly and a handle,
which are linked together with a rivet. The handle contains a trigger and indicator
assembly. Latch assembly configurations H245-5, H245-7 and H245-9
incorporate a latch safety. The latch assemblies are designed to be mounted
flush with the cowling panel to minimize air drag and to have dual locking features
for safety. The primary lock is the engagement of the hook assembly with the
panel mating pin, and the secondary lock is the engagement of the hook-up pin in
the hook assembly slot when the handle is fully closed.

6. Operation

(1) H245-3 Latch Assembly

The H245-3 latch assembly is unlocked by inserting an opening tool into the
trigger tool slot and pivoting the trigger and indicator assembly outward
(counterclockwise in Figure 1). Doing so disengages the hook assembly slot from
the hook-up pin. The spring-loaded latch assembly then opens to the full travel
position, causing the hook assembly to slide forward, out of the engaged position,
to unlock and disengage the hook from the panel mating pin. The indicator
assembly snaps closed, locking the hook-up pin in the hook assembly slot, when
the handle is returned to a position flush with the cowling panel.

(2) H245-5, H245-7 and H245-9 Latch Assemblies

The H2455, H245-7 and H245-9 latch assemblies operate in exactly the
same manner as the H245-3 latch, except that each configuration
incorporates a latch safety. The latch safety prevents latch closure should
the hook assembly fail to engage the hook-up pin.
The H245-7 and H245-9 latch assemblies provides a more effective latch
safety assembly than does the H245-5 latch assembly. Instructions are also
contained in this manual to upgrade the H245-7 latch assembly to a H245-9
assembly by replacing the trigger and indicator assembly.

A. Introduction

(1) Purpose

This Illustrated Parts List (IPL) illustrates and lists the subassemblies
and piece parts that can be disassembled, repaired, replaced, and
reassembled on latch assemblies H245-3, H2455, H245-7 and H245-9
and is intended for use in identifying and procuring replacement parts.

(2) How to use the IPL

1) Locate the part on the illustration.

2) Note the item number assigned to the part.

3) Refer to the parts list and locate the item number in the
FIG. ITEM column.

04 If the part number is shown:

1) Refer to the parts list and locate the part in the PART
NUMBER column.

2) Note the figure number and the item number assigned to

the part in FIG. ITEM column.

3) Refer to the illustration to locate part.

B. Explanation of Parts List

(1) Fig. Item Column

(2) Part Number Column

(a) The PART NUMBER column contains the manufacturer

assigned part number for each replaceable subassembly or
piece parts.

(b) When a part number exceeds 15 digits, the full part number is
not listed, but rather a reference number that is compatible with
ATA 200/2000 (provisioning) specifications. However, the full
part number is listed in the NOMENCLATURE column.

@> Parts manufactured by lower tier companies (if any) are

identified by the appropriate federal supply code for
manufactures (FSCM) following the item description in the
NOMENCLATURE column. Manufacture codes are listed in
paragraph 11. C.

(3) Nomenclature Column

(a) The NOMENCLATURE column contains a generic description

to fully identify the subassembly or piece part.
The NOMENCLATURE column may also contain the
Manufacturer’s FSCM code (if the part was not manufactured by
the Hartwell Corp.) and part number (if longer than 15 digits).

(b) The indenture system used in the NOMENCLATURE column

shows the relationship of one part to another. For a given item,
the number of indentures depicts the relationship of the item to
the associated next higher assembly, as follows:

(c) Where both left - and right - hand assemblies comprising

mirror-image subassemblies and detail parts are covered in one
manual, the left - hand part will be listed first with one item
number, and the right - hand part number will be listed
immediately following it with the next - higher sequential item
number. Attaching parts and parts breakdown will follow the
right - hand item entry.

(4) Effectivity Code (EFF CODE) column

Reference letters (a, b,c, etc.) are assigned in the EFF CODE column
to each top assembly. The reference letter of the applicable top
assembly is also shown in the EFF CODE column for each detail part
and subassembly except that no reference is shown for detail parts
and subassemblies used on all top assemblies.

(5) Units Per Assembly (UNITS PER ASSEMBLY) column

The UNITS PER ASSEMBLY column shows the total number of

components required per assembly, per subassembly, and per sub-
subassembly as applicable. The letters RF indicate the item is listed
for reference purposes.

(6) Service Bulletin Incorporation

(a) Except as indicated below, assemblies, subassemblies, and

detailed parts subject to modification, addition, or replacement
by an issued service bulletin are annotated to show both pre-
and post- service bulletin configuration. The term (PRE SB
XXXX) in the NOMENCLATURE column designates the
original configuration, and the term POST SB XXXX)
identifies assemblies and parts after the service bulletin
modification has been completed.

(b) Subassemblies and detail parts used on assemblies bearing the

pre- or post-service bulletin notation will not carry the same
notation themselves if the use code (s) assigned to them clearly
reflect (s) their pre- or post- service bulletin status.

(c) Top assemblies subject to modification by a service bulletin

without assignment of a new part number (no production
equivalent of the modified assembly) are not annotated with
pre- or post-service bulletin information.

60 if a assembly or detail part is modified by a service bulletin

without a new part number being assigned, the original part
number is listed with an alpha-variant item number and the term
(POST SB XXXX). The effectivity code remains the same as for
the pre-service bulletin configuration.

VI Alpha-variant item numbers

(a) Alpha-variants A-Z (except I and 0) are assigned

to existing item numbers when necessary to show.

1) Added items

2) Service bulletin modifications

3) Configuration differences

4) Optional parts
