QUESTION 12
‘People with disability have a right to participate on an equal basis with others.’ Explain which model
of disability this statement supports.
The statement "People with disability have a right to participate on an equal basis with others"
supports the social model of disability. This model views disability as a social construct, rather than
an individual medical problem, and recognizes that social and physical barriers, discrimination, and
societal attitudes are what disable people, rather than their impairment or condition. The social
model emphasizes the need to remove these barriers and create an inclusive society that enables
people with disabilities to participate fully and equally in all areas of life. This includes access to
education, employment, transportation, housing, healthcare, and social and cultural activities,
among others
QUESTION 13
Why is an ordinary community life important for an individual with a disability?
An ordinary community life is important for an individual with a disability because it enables them to
lead a life that is similar to that of their peers without disabilities. It involves participating in activities,
events, and relationships within the community, living independently, having a job, and contributing
to society. This helps individuals with disabilities to feel included, valued, and respected in their
community. It also promotes their social and emotional well-being, builds their confidence and self-
esteem, and enhances their skills and abilities
