(1) The Indian Army has created a curiosity among the people around the world by sharing
pictures of "mysterious footprints" measuring 32X15 inches or 81X38 cm in the Himalayas. It
suggests that the footprints belong to mythical
beast "Yeti" that has been sighted nearby at
Makalu-Barun National Park. Yeti is believed to
be an "abominable snowman", which has
appeared in folktales and popular stories. Many
over the decades have claimed to have seen Yeti,
but without much proof. Since there is not much
evidence about this "elusive Yeti snowman", the
scientific community has called it a legend. For
the first time, an Indian Army Mountaineering
Expedition Team has sited mysterious footprints of mythical beast 'Yeti' measuring 32x15 inches
close to Makalu Base Camp on 09 April 2019.

(2) In Nepal's folklore, Yeti is an "abominable Snowman", who looks like an ape, is taller than an
average human and is believed to live in the Himalayas, Siberia, Central and East Asia. Yeti,
during pre-19th century, has been believed to be a "Glacier Being" who was worshipped by the
indigenous communities. Tales of a wild hairy beast roaming the Himalayas have captured the
imagination of climbers in Nepal since the 1920s, prompting many climbers to go looking for it.
Over the years, there have been stories about spotting of Yeti, its footprints, its hair etc., but no
credible beast Yeti images.

(3) Himalayan people call Yeti or Meh-Teh with different names. In Tibetan language, Yeti is called
"Miche", which means a "man bear". They also refer it as "Dzu-teh", which means cattle bear or
Himalayan brown bear. Its other names are Migoi (Tibetan for wild man), Bun manchi (Nepali for
jungle man", Mirka and Kang Admi.

(4) Yeti" has appeared in one of the episodes of popular cartoon show "The adventures of Tintin.
In the show, Yeti is shown as a benevolent creature which "internalises certain human
characteristics". It portrays Yeti not as a wild animal, but the one that has a human soul. In 2017, a
group of international researchers studied multiple purported Yeti samples collected from across
the Himalayan region and concluded they belonged to bears.

Dattadri Kothur from the sprawling metropolis of Mumbai likes to
call his eco-friendly initiative. Ganapati idols that the 31-year-old
makes, aims to tackle air pollution and water pollution. Dattadri’s
quest for environment-friendly Ganesh festival started young, at the
age of 15, to be precise. In September 2002, when his teenage friends
were busy savouring different delicacies and welcoming colourful
Ganapati idols at home, Dattadri was busy calculating the amount
of electricity being used in lighting up the streets and individual
houses of Lower Parel. Looking for an answer, Dattadri approached his parents, who then told
him that ferry lights and bulbs are specially used for ten days in the neighbourhood to make the
festival more colourful and bright.

(2) “I decided to do something different that would be harmless to

the environment. I used radium infused bulb that would only glow
in the dark. Though the charm of bulbs wasn’t as good as the lights,
my family agreed to use it for ten days”, Dattadri tells NDTV.

(3) After experimenting with radium infused bulb, Dattadri came up

with Ganapati idols made from clay instead of non-biodegradable Plaster of Paris (PoP) that
pollutes the water bodies when the idols are immersed. After receiving support from his friends
and family for his green endeavours, Dattadri started his own venture ‘Tree Ganesha’ in 2015 to
spread awareness and involve more people in his mission of celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi in an
environmentally responsible manner. Initially he just made 300 idols of different sizes and
Page 1 of 6

distributed it among the people he knew. As the word spread on social media, he started getting
orders and that is how he started his own venture.

(4) The idols are made from red soil and the bases of the idols are stuffed with organic fertilizer
and seeds. From 12 inch to 20-inch Ganpati; from seeds of tulsi, marigold, neem to ladyfinger,
‘Tree Ganesha’ has a wide range of idols. Depending on the size, the idols range anything
between ` 2,000 and 4,000.’

(5) At the end of ten-day festival, all one has to do is to immerse the idol in the plant pot. Within
eight to ten days, the idols will dissolve, and the seeds will germinate into plants over time.
Dattadri manages to sell around 200 idols every year and he hopes to reach the target of one lakh
idols in the next 4-5 years.

1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow: [5]
(1) Although Louis Braille died when he was forty-three years old,
he succeeded in devising a system of reading and writing for the
blind which is now taught all over the world. Braille lost his sight
accidentally as a child. Nevertheless, he was able to complete his
education at a school for the blind in Paris and became a teacher.
In his day, the few books that were available for blind people were
printed in big, raised type; the letters used were those of the
ordinary alphabet. The reading of such books required immense
effort. Not only that, writing was almost impossible, for a blind
and it was still restricted to an alphabet which was extraordinarily difficult to reproduce on paper.
(2)Braille's idea was to use raised dots instead of raised letters. He evolved a system which made
use of only six dots in all. By various combinations of these dots, it not only proved possible to
reproduce each letter in the alphabet, but punctuation marks, numbers, and musical notation as
well. Reading and writing have thus been enormously simplified.
(3) Improvements are continually being made on the system, though basically it is the same as that
contrived by Braille. Large raised dots, printed on one side of a page only, make many books for
the blind cumbersome. A single book in ordinary print runs into several volumes when it is
transcribed into the dot system. The dots are subjected to a great deal of wear and tear, and finally
disappear, so a book becomes useless.
(4) A machine has now been invented that directs plastic dots onto paper. These dots do not wear
out at all. Since it is possible, by this means, to make use of both sides of a page, books for the
blind are less bulky. This new way of 'dotting' pages can also be used for such things as the
production of atlas with the outlines of countries clearly imprinted. Braille's system remains the

greatest landmark. It has provided a simple means for producing books and even newspapers,
and ensured that no blind person spends his life in ignorance as well as darkness.
