    Section A: The Treaty of Waitangi (50 marks)

    Choose ONE question

    1. Why did Māori and the Crown sign the Treaty of Waitangi? To what extent could each
    party, in 1840, expect their view of the Treaty would prevail?

    2. Discuss the extent to which Māori/Iwi and Pakeha understandings of the Treaty of
    Waitangi changed over time. Restrict your answer to ONE of the following periods:
    1840-1880 OR 1880-1920 OR 1920-1975.

    3. In what ways have Māori protest and political movements and organisations contributed
    to debates about the Treaty of Waitangi? You may restrict your answer to one movement
    or organisation if you wish.

    4. Compare and contrast the range of views contained in the literature on Pakeha and the
    Treaty of Waitangi.

    Part B: The Waitangi Tribunal (50 marks)

    Choose ONE question

    5. Why, and in what ways, did the Waitangi Tribunal’s work change after 1985? Answer
    with examples from AT LEAST TWO of the Tribunal’s reports.

    6. What are some of the main criticisms that have been levelled at the Waitangi Tribunal
    and its work and how, if at all, can they be countered?

    7. In what ways has the Waitangi Tribunal developed and applied principles of the Treaty of
    Waitangi in its published reports? Answer in relation to claims concerning land OR
    fisheries OR the environment OR Māori language and culture OR Wai 262.
