PRE-READING ACTIVITY
 Read this short extract about a funny incident in the park. Once you have finished, answer the reading
comprehension questions.
A THREATEN WORLD
Although scientists have worried about several kind of threats that human kind will face to face in a few years most of us have never been worried
about them, in spite of some them have been around for many years. We rarely think about things that could affect our future way of living. We are
wasting our last chance. Let’s check the two most likely threats.
1. Environmental
We have already started living in this threat in many countries, mainly in African continent where water sources has almost disappeared and its
effects have been lethal. However, if fresh water ran out from our world, what would happen? All living things would die out before water could
possibly run out, because once there was too little water due to the greenhouse effect all plants would die. Then stronger animals would move to the
cities looking for something to drink, and they would kill many people that crossed their ways and then they would die because there is not enough
water or food to live on.
This would all happen before all the water runs out. If global emissions had been controlled in the past, we would not have had the problem of the
greenhouse effect that is the main cause of water scarcity.
2. Biohazard
For years, we have been warned that a pandemic is coming. It could be the flu; it could be something else. We know that lots of people will die. As
terrible as this will be, on an ever more crowded planet, you can’t help wondering whether the survivors might be better off in some ways. Wouldn’t it
be easier to rebuild modern society into something more sustainable if there were fewer of us? So, what if a deadly virus with no known cure would
spread around the world?
What time would we have before disappearing? A pandemic would kill us just in a twinkle of an eye because we did not have the means of stop it on
time. We could not control its spreading through the air, and in one year, almost fifty percent of world inhabitants disappeared from the Earth surface.
This fact will produce a public health problem that killed the rest of people still alive because of million dead bodies decomposition everywhere. If we
have thought about the consequences of our uncontrolled development, we would not have had to face this kind of threat, which has been the result
of our own unconsciousness.

Now answer the following questions:

1. How could human being control these threats? 4. What would happen with our world if a nuclear
2. If you could change the world, what would you do? confrontation started?
3. What would have happened if our development had 5. How long would a mega virus take to spread around
been better? the world and kill us?
