Let’s now
discuss about
the
environment.

ENVIRONMENT

 It is a place of interaction where it plays a vital role in shaping our identity and
personality.
 It is the complex of physical, chemical, and biotic factors that act upon an organism or
an ecological community and ultimately determine its form and survival.
 The environment is something you are very familiar with. It's everything that makes
up our surroundings and affects our ability to live on the earth, the air we breathe, the
water that covers most of the earth's surface, the plants and animals around us, and
much more.

PHILOSOPHICAL APPROACH
 How we react on the environment.
 How we accept things.
 How to deal with changes.
 How to adapt to the system.
 How to build foundations of understanding.

IMPACT OF ENVIRONMENT TO OUR PHILOSOPHICAL APPROACH

 Creates Mutual Understanding
 Creates Misunderstanding
 Develop Culture of Belongingness
 Source of Ideas and Opinions
 Caters Response and Perception

3
What can you say about the current situation of our
environment? Write your answer in a ½ sheet of paper.

Different Environmental Problems and their Impacts to

Human Lives

o Air pollution
o Water Pollution
o Acid rain
o Climate change
o Deforestation
o Depletion of natural resources
o Depletion of our Ozone Layer
o Waste Pollution
o Acidification and Increase in Sea Temperature
o Overpopulation

Choose at least two environmental problems and write your

understanding and give solution how can we prevent or
avoid this problem from happening? Write your answer in a
1 whole sheet of paper.

below and be ready to answer the
activities on the succeeding pages.
Goodluck!

Philosophical Approach in Connection to Environment of the Human Person

ECOLOGY branch of biology that deals with the relationship of organism to one another
and to their physical surrounding.

OIKOS means environment

LOGUS means study

ECOLOGIST is a scientist who studies the interaction of living things and its environment.

ERNST HAECKEL
o According to Haeckel (1866), ecology refers to the scientific analysis of the
interaction between animals, plants and their inorganic environment. Put simply,
ecology deals with the balance of nature. Since nature includes human persons,
ecology also encompasses the study of the human person’s role in her/his
environment.

3 PHILOSOPHICAL APPROACH IN ECOLOGY

1. DEEP ECOLOGY
2. SOCIAL ECOLOGY
3. TRANSPERSONAL ECOLOGY

1. DEEP ECOLOGY
o It was coined by Arne Naess and his colleagues Sigmund Kvaloy and Nils Faarlund
in 1973. Deep ecology affirms the principle that all things in the world have their
intrinsic value. This means that no matter how small or big the things that surround
us, they possess some kind of intrinsic value which is important in creating balance in
nature.
o In deep ecology, humans need to see the environment and all living things not as
means for survival, but as “partners” or co-equals in the preservation life.
6
o Deep ecology provides us with the idea that our environment is an integral part to our
existence. It is an undeniable fact that we are too much dependent on our natural
resources for our daily subsistence.

ECOLOGICAL SELF
o It is the idea of one that is mature, sensitive and caring towards the environment.
2. SOCIAL ECOLOGY
o As a theory, it was developed by Murray Bookchin, who is an American anarchist and
environmentalist. According to Bookchin (1982), social ecology provides an analysis
of the patterns and forms of interrelationships between the human person and her
environment.
o Steven Best (1998), social ecology is considered as the most powerful and
comprehensive environmental philosophy ever developed since it offers a powerful
alternative to liberalism, marxism, postmodern and ecological theories like
ecofeminism and deep ecology.
o Social ecology claims that all environmental problems that we are experiencing at
present are social problems which are rooted in the disharmony of relationship
between human beings and nature, where human beings have controlled nature for
their own personal interests.
3. TRANSPERSONAL ECOLOGY
o Transpersonal ecology explains the tripartite aspects of human self which gives us
the theoretical basis of our attitude towards our environment.
o As suggested by the transpersonal ecologists, we have to understand not just the
importance of the environment to us, but our role in the life’s cycle. In that way, we
are able to anchor our decisions in accordance to moral norms and to natural laws.
o Warwick Fox is an ecologist who developed the transpersonal ecology in 1990. He
attempted to develop further the concept of deep ecology which borrows the main
concept of deep ecology that humans and the environment are partners or co-equals in
the preservation of life.
Good Job my dear learners,
continue the learning process on
the next page in connection to
the idea of Human Self.

7
3 IDEA ABOUT HUMAN SELF BY WARWICK FOX
• Desiring-Impulsive Self (Strong Desire at Short Period of Time)
• Normative-Judgmental Self (Accordance to Social Norms)
• Rationalizing-Deciding Self (Actions Based on Reasons)

MAJOR VIEWS OF ENVIRONMENTAL PHILOSOHY

1. ANTHROPOCENTRISM

 Focuses on the significant role of the humankind in the world. Human are the
most important species in the world.

Question: As a student how do you help your community as a species of the

world? Write your answer in a ½ sheet of paper.

__________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________

2.BIOCENTRISM

 Humans together with different living organism are both important and they
must be protected. This view advocates ethical treatment of animals.

Question: Give some of your students’ rights and give reasons why do you need
protection? Write your answer in a ½ sheet of paper.

__________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________

3. ECOCENTRISM

 Places great value on ecosystem and biological communities. This view

promotes the idea of balance nature which aims stability and beauty.

Question: Why it is important for us to protect and sustain the balance of our
environment? Write your answer in a ½ sheet of paper.

I hope you are ok and well my dear learners.

Get some water and drink before we start discussing

about environmental ethics.

8
ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS

 This is a moral approach that analyzes the relationship between humans and
the environment. It also talks about environmental problems and human
accountabilities and actions.
 Environmental ethics is the discipline in philosophy that studies the moral
relationship of human beings to, and also the value and moral status of,
the environment and its non-human contents
 Environmental ethics deals with issues related to the rights of individuals that
are fundamental to life and well-being. This concerns not only the needs of
each person today, but also those who will come after us. It also deals with the
rights of other living creatures that inhabit on earth.

ETHICS
 or moral philosophy is a branch of philosophy that "involves systematizing,
defending, and recommending concepts of right and wrong behavior.

IMPORTANCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS:

 Make us aware of indiscriminate and destructive human activities.

 Inculcate moral values towards nature and learn to respect various life forms through
environmental ethics.
 Concerned with the issues of responsible personal conduct with respect to natural
landscape, resources, species and non-human organisms
 Conduct with respect to person is, of course, the direct concern of modern
philosophy.

Why Need to Study Environmental Ethics?

To overcome the following questions.
 1. What are the environment damage produce by the present generation?
 2. What acts must be giving up to slow such damage?

9
ENVIRONMENTAL ETHICS PRINCIPLES
 We should have profound respect for nature.
 We must maintain a harmonious relation with other species.
 Everyone should take responsibility for this impact on nature.
 Local & indigenous environmental knowledge should be respected.
 We must plan for the long term.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT ________________________

 This concept focuses on reconciling human activities and economic development with
the protection of the environment.

PRINCIPLE OF SUSTAINABILITY

1. ENVIRONMENTAL INTEGRITY
 It means maintaining the state of environment undisrupted and with essence of
balance and continuity.

2. ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY
 It refers to prudence in decision making regarding the use of resources to ensure that
there is minimum to zero waste.

3. EQUITY
 Demands that we use our natural resources in such a manner that these are conserved
so that the next generation will be able to use them.

PRUDENCE AND FRUGALITY

PRUDENCE

 It is the ability to regulate one’s action and behavior.

 Prudence is care, caution, and good judgment, as well as wisdom in looking ahead.
 Prudence which simply means intelligent, creates a better world in our environment.
 Use problem solving and critical thinking to settle disputes between family members.
Practicing prudence means practicing counsel, judgement, and decisiveness. You can
be prudent at home by offering counsel to family members who are arguing and using
good judgement to try to settle any disputes.

FRUGALITY

 It is being thrifty with the use of one’s resources.

 The word frugality is oftentimes used in money; a thriftiness or a quality of being
economical with money. If this term is applied in the environment, this simply means
that you have to conserve as well as protect the environment.
