Lesson A: Leisure Time

A1. Getting started


- leisure time (n) the time when you are not working or doing other duties
- major (v) to study something as your main subject at university
- journalism (n) the work of collecting, writing and publishing news stories and
articles in newspapers and magazines
- hobby (n) an activity which someone does for pleasure when they are not
working
- creative (adj) producing or using original and unusual ideas
- someday (adv) at some time in the future which is not yet known

- graphics (n) images and designs used in books, magazines, etc
- saxophone (n) a musical instrument made of metal which is played by blowing
through a reed and pressing the metal keys to produce notes
- pool (n) a game in which two people use cues (= long thin poles) to hit 16
coloured balls into six holes around the edge of a large table covered
in soft cloth
- jog (v) to run at a slow regular speed, especially as a form of exercise
- work out (v) to exercise in order to improve the strength or appearance of your
body

B1. Building vocabulary


- rock music (n) a type of popular music with a strong loud beat which is usually
played with electric guitars and drums
- hip-hop (n) a type of popular music in which the subject of the songs is often
politics or society and the words are spoken rather than sung
- rap (n) a type of popular music with a strong rhythm in which the words are
spoken, not sung
- pop music (n) modern popular music, usually with a strong beat, created with
electrical or electronic equipment, and easy to listen to and
remember
- classical music (n) traditional in style or form of music, or based on methods developed
over a long period of time
- country music (n) popular music which is based on a type of traditional music from the
western and southern US
- folk music (n) modern music and songs that are written in a style similar to that of
traditional music

C1. Conversation strategy

- pasta (n) a food made from flour, water and sometimes egg which is cooked
and usually served with a sauce. It is made in various shapes which
have different names
- dish (n) food prepared in a particular way as part of a meal
- photography (n) the activity or job of taking photographs or films
- blog (n) a diary (= regular record of your thoughts, opinions and experiences)

- link (n) a connection between documents on the Internet
- fix (v) to repair something
- martial art (n) a sport that is a traditional form of fighting or defending yourself
- board grame (n) any of many games, for example chess , in which small pieces are
moved around on a board with a pattern on it
- puzzle (n) a game or toy in which you have to fit separate pieces together, or a
problem which you have to answer by using your skill or knowledge
- Sudoku (n) a number game in which you have to write a number between 1 and 9
in each small box of a 9x9 square
- edit (v) to prepare a text or film for printing or viewing by correcting
mistakes and deciding what will be removed and what will be kept in

- web design (n) the planning and creation of websites
- crossword (n) a game in which you write words which are the answers to questions

- purse (n) a small container for money, usually used by a woman
- wallet (n) a small folding case for carrying paper money, credit cards and
other flat objects, used especially by men
- knit (v) to make clothes, etc. by using two long needles to connect wool or
another type of thread into joined rows
- unique (adj) being the only existing one of its type or, more generally, unusual or
special in some way
- flea market (n) a market, which usually takes place outside, where old or used goods
are sold cheaply
- pottery (n) the activity or skill of making clay objects by hand
- handmade (adj) made using the hands rather than a machine

D2. Listening and speaking


- competition (n) an organized event in which people try to win a prize
- cycle (v) to ride a bicycle
- print (n) letters, numbers, words or symbols that have been produced on paper
by a machine using ink

D3. Writing
- expression (n) a word or group of words used in a particular situation or by
particular people
- message board (n) a place on a website where you can leave messages for other people
to read
- recommend (v) to suggest that someone or something would be good or suitable for a
particular job or purpose, or to suggest that a particular action should
be done
- contrast (v) to compare two people or things in order to show the differences
between them

- bake (v) to cook inside a cooker, without using added liquid or fat
