QUESTION 1
Heating and cooling load estimation play important role in designing HVAC system.
(b) Discuss relationship of people and the increment of load in a particular spaces.
People can be subjected as internal load it is because people can release sensible heat and latent
heat inside conditioned space. So the higher the number of people, the higher the increment of
load.

(d) Discuss free convection and forced convection in heat transfer process and give ONE
(1) examples.
The convection heat transfer is usually subdivided into free and forced convection. In
the forced convection, the fluid is blown or pumped past the heated surface using a pump
or fan, while in the free convection, fluid flow is naturally achieved by buoyancy effects,
such as density variation in the fluid.
• Example of force convection is using a fan on a hot summer day
• Example of free convection is sea breeze during a summer day when the sun heats up
the land and the water. Water takes longer to warm up than land. As a result, the air
above the land heats up faster, becomes less dense and rises under the buoyancy force.
The difference in air pressure causes the air to flow from sea to land.

(e) Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of natural ventilation and mechanical
ventilation in a building.
Advantages of natural ventilation is it is decrease carbon production because it do not
use any electrical power and can practically supply a high ventilation level more
economically due to the employment of natural powers and large openings.
Disadvantages of natural ventilation prevents the usage of particulate filters. Security,
cultural, and climate standards may command that windows and vents remain closed; in
these situations, ventilation level may be much lower. Natural ventilation is changeable
and based on outside climatic situations comparative to the inside environment. Natural
ventilation may be hard to control, with airstream being uncomfortably heavy in some
locations and static in others. Advantages of a mechanical ventilation system allows you
to fully automate stale air removal and fresh air intake while delivering continuous
indoor air purification using air filters. Disadvantages of mechanical ventilation If you
ignore installing considerations, the inappropriate installation of a mechanical
ventilation system may increase the maintenance costs dramatically. The utility service
interruption or equipment failure often interrupts the regular operation of a mechanical
ventilation system.

(f) Determine TWO (2) internal load and TWO (2) external loads in estimating cooling
load in a building.
Internal load
1. People
2. Equipment and appliances
External load
1. Heat gain through exterior walls & roofs
2. Solar heat gain through fenestrations (windows)

QUESTION 2
(a) Heat transmission through a building depended on the heat transmission value (U).
From a case study, a brick of 4.5 inch consisting 5/8 inch cement plaster on both
side. The air moving moving air towards the brick is 7.5 mph with surface emittance
Ɛ= 0.9.
(i) Construct the typical layout of the brick with moving air towards the brick
with still air on the other side.

(ii) Determine heat transfer resistance of R for all the properties involves in the
case study.

(iii) Examine the heat transmission value of U if the outsides air is moving air
with 7.5 mph.

(b) Figure Q5 (b) shows roof consisting of ashpalt shingles, wood shingles plain, 3/4"
cellularglass insulation and 1/4” asbestos cement board. The moving air towards the
brick is 7.5 mph. Surface emittance Ɛ= 0.9. Solve total thermal resistance of R for
the roof.
