The document discusses solo roleplaying and how it differs from solo writing. When solo roleplaying, the player does not want to know what will happen in the story and instead relies on dice rolls and random tables to determine unexpected outcomes and guide the narrative. This allows for uncertainty and surprise even when playing alone.

There are many people who abhor the very idea of drawing from reference photos.
They see it as a betrayal of real art. Others greatly admire the skill, patience,

Level Design Tips

Make use of "arenas"--confined spaces where the player must solve some puzzle,
fight some enemy, etc to move on. This is often referred to as "gating" the player,
ie barring their progress until they have completed their task. This helps to
create a sense of accomplishment when the player is allowed to continue, and makes
for easy save/retry loops. The "arena" does not have to be an "arena" in the
classical sense, it simply refers to any confined space where the player has to
complete a task--it could be a courtyard that has no exit until an enemy bashes
through a wall, for example.

Block the area behind the player as much as possible (within reason). Playtesting
has demonstrated that players are more confident about moving forward in a level if
the amount of backtracking available to them is limited. This also plays nicely
with the "arena" concept--an explosion in the tunnel a player just exited confines
them to the next area of the map, creating a new "arena".

Following along the same lines as the second point, carefully limit the number of
paths available to a player. While it is common these days to advertise that there
are multiple paths through the game, this is frustrating to players who want to
ensure that they are seeing everything the game has to offer. Some branching,
however, can make the game more interesting and is more practical as it provides
multiple path options to AI, etc, and gives the player some freedom of choice.

I love drawing so much
I have a dead end full time job that is fine but understimulating. Pay is ok.
Workload is ok. Not a ton of complaints, but it's pretty mind numbing with no
progression and the pay is definitely not keeping pace with inflation. However, I
go home and draw and it's amazing. Sometimes I make money from the art but thats
beside the point. I love that there's never an end to how many projects to do. I
love how I always have skills to practice and improve. I love how I can make
something from nothing. I love how it makes people happy. I love how it makes me
happy. What a wonderful thing to be able to draw.

Circadian Dice:
Overview
A cosmic entity has twisted time into an endless cycle. By observing the repeating
patterns, the entity intends to destroy all uncertainty and ultimately control
reality.

In Circadian Dice, you control a group of heroes that have managed to step outside
this unnatural cycle, and are now setting out to find and destroy its source. You
will need to overcome a series of skirmishes by upgrading your dice to bend chance
in your favor, and strategically using your limited resources to defeat your
enemies.
While the heroes and their dice are restored to normal after each scenario (whether
they die or succeed), any upgrades, relics, abilities, and modifiers that you have
unlocked persist - so your arsenal is constantly improving! The better you perform
in battle, the quicker you will build your arsenal and progress through the game
towards your ultimate goal to break the loop and save the universe.

Features
A game about probability manipulation and combo crafting: shape 6-sided dice into
weapons of destruction, generators of wealth, magic conduits, or stat-boosting
machines!
13 scenarios, each available in Normal and Hard Mode. In Hard Mode, each scenario
is significantly changed with new enemies, secrets, and challenges!
Built for quick pick-up-and-play sessions: each scenario takes between 10 and 30
minutes to play, and is designed as a stand-alone challenge.
Unlockable end-game modes such as an endless randomized scenario, and a campaign
mode that provides a more traditional, long-term roguelike experience.
10 different heroes with unique characteristics and play styles.
60 unlockable and equippable Relics that provide your hero with new abilities,
change your stats, and give you game-warping bonuses.
Tons of hand-drawn animations.
110+ different abilities that strengthen your hero, manipulate your dice, or damage
your enemies.
A semi-random upgrade mechanic for each scenario and hero, that ensures new combo
opportunities every time you play.
66 enemies and 27 bosses, each with different characteristics and abilities.
(Almost) every enemy can be captured in your dice to give you bonuses and new
attacks based on the enemy's attributes!
Rare random enemy mutations that can either make your adventure harder, or be
turned to your benefit.
High replayability: random mutators, semi-random upgrade opportunities, and near-
infinite combo possibilities makes each run of a scenario unique!
Lots of secrets to discover.
Extensive tooltips for every element in the game help you learn and strategize.

I’m a writer myself and there is a really important difference here, in my
experience. When I write, I’m crafting a narrative for an audience and so the
suspense, narrative interest, surprise comes from my knowing what is going to
happen and finding the way through to it.

When I solo RP, I follow Trevor Devall’s dictum: I really don’t want to know what’s
going to happen. The interest comes from experiencing the scenario unfold in
unexpected ways and responding to that as a player. That’s why I rely on
probability to decide the chance of various outcomes, and also what I call
“semantic engines” or oracles that provide random prompts that can guide me into
other directions. I tend to “play all the books”, grabbing random tables and
prompts from all the RPGs I have at hand. If there’s a monster in the roots of that
ruined dungeon, I don’t want to know what it is until I meet it. If there’s a twist
along the way, I roll to find out what it is and then spin out the new direction.

When I GM for a group, of course, the uncertainty and surprise come from the dice
and the players. When I play solo, I’m the player also, and so the uncertainty
comes from the dice and the oracles. It’s as much fun as writing, but a different
kind of play.

I memorized and recalled 1505 digits of pi in 2018. This is a Singapore National
Record.

My students, some of them are 5 years old, are easily able to memorize at least
over a 150 of digits of pi. These students were not born gifted, they just apply
memory strategies when trying to memorize pi.

You don’t have to go to an Ivy League school to memorize 300 digits of pi.
Preschoolers are able to do this easily.

Why did I memorize pi?

A couple of reasons. The first one is because I can. I’m not a genius. I just use
memory improvement techniques like the number shape method and the method of loci
to help me.

The second reason, was because I wanted the national record for pi memorization and
recitation. I knew I could do it. I already had a record for the longest colour
sequence memorize. Why not another memory record. Again, I’ve got to emphasise the
fact that anyone can do what I do. Anyone can memorize pi up to 1505 digits. It’s
all about using the right memory technique.

Another fun reason to memorize pi is that it can be a cool party trick. People are
really blown away by the fact that I can just rattle on the digits of pi. Also
whenever I come across a whiteboard. I can’t help but to write down pi 🤣

Once you know how to do it. Memorization can be extremely fun. When I was
memorizing pi, I was basically creating and entire movie in my head using the
number shape system in combination with the method of loci (Also known as The Roman
Room). When it was time for me to recall. I simply played the movie back in my
head.

if you would like to start memorizing pi, I suggest learning the number shape
technique to begin with. Once you have learned that technique. Try memorizing 10
numbers a day. It is really easy. All it takes is a little bit of practice.

Historically, the Lakota relied on a rich oral tradition to preserve the legends
and stories that maintained their spiritual way of life. Creation stories were
known only among the holy men, who passed them down through the generations. No
single holy man knew all the creation myths. These stories would likely have been
lost, if a European doctor named James Walker had not taken it upon himself to
write them down. At first, the Lakota holy men told Walker only the common stories
known the whole tribe, but as time passed Walker grew closer to the Natives.
Eventually, they initiated him into their group and he learned the secret creation
myths as well. He was one of the first to translate Lakota to English. However,
written text lacks some of the complexities of oral tradition. Dramatic pauses in
the story and change in tone to denote different characters require the human
voice, and so in translated versions important aspects of the original stories are
lost.

You will work on your novel for at least 1 full hour per day. The
optimal amount of time is an hour and a half, from my experience. But you have
to set aside at least an hour.
Note: dont write all day Saturday and all day Sunday. Youll burn out on
those days, and youll forget your progress after a week of inactivity. Youll
probably be a grouch, too, and kick your dog and yell at your friends, and
basically be an emotional basket case. One to two hours a day is sufficient if
you do it each and every day. No excuses.
=================================================
If youve come to this book looking for inspiration, Im going to give you your
first dose of cold, hard truth: Writing doesnt require large doses of inspiration.
Writers who wait for inspiration to hit, particularly writers with other full-time
commitments a job, a family, a needy feline companion named Ponce de
Leon will likely find themselves waiting forever. Theyll find themselves
sitting in coffee shops, pens poised in air, ordering another drink, looking
around, talking to the locals (who saw the notebook and pen, and thus believe
some writing was surely done that day), picking some lint off that argyle
sweater, and then packing up to go home and watch another episode of Seinfeld
on TV. Thats reality.
=================================================
The premise of The 90-Day Novel is based upon four driving philosophies.
1. If you do not write on a daily basis, or a near-daily basis, you are not a
writer.
2. Outlining is an essential component of novel writing.
3. Novels are written scene by scene, not character by character or action by
action.
4. Its possible to write a book in months, not years.
================================================
Engage the interest of your reader by
connecting them immediately to your characters. People, quite simply, are very
interested in reading about other people.
=================================================
Writing is a solitary enterprise, but talking about writing isnt.

I played Ironsworn for 37ish sessions over 3 months, that was my first solo and
ttrpg game! I'm currently playing Scarlet Heroes and can see this easily going on
for as long.

I journal but I keep it pretty brief, only describing the most interesting and
exciting parts in detail, the rest is just summarised. I keep some record of
mechanical stuff like dice rolls but again I try keep it brief now I'm comfortable
with how to play.

I've also changed my journalling style switching to SH as I'm using Mythic GME now
too. Previously I would do one journal entry for the entire session, but now I'm
doing one for each Mythic Scene, which means I can sometimes do 2-3+ scenes in a
session. I'm at scene 28 in my SH campaign after playing a couple times a week for
the last month or so, but in terms of hours I think I'm some way off my Ironsworn
campaign.

I used to be play a lot of video games, but im so hooked on TTRPGs now that I've
learnt I can solo them, I bought the new Zelda game and have ended up barely
playing as I just end up wanting to play Scarlet Heroes in my free time instead 😅.

how_many_of_you_write_without_the_intention_of/
Me. I write for myself.
=======
Both things can be true at the same time. I write because I absolutely love it but
I also would like to be published one day. I write stories I want to read and enjoy
the hell out of writing them. I wouldn't write if I only wrote for other people.
But that doesn't mean that I don't want to share them eventually.

I write two genres. My baby is my fantasy book and that is the one I will try and
get professionally published. But I also love writing romance but genre writing is
something I will self-publish because it allows me to build a back catalog and
publish frequently, thus potentially make money. I am currently in the process of
building my book catalog before I start self publishing.

It's fine if I never make any money though. I am having a blast writing my books
and that's something that's enough. Publishing is only a perk.
=============
I do intend to publish my writing but I’m not writing for the purpose of
publishing. I write for my own pleasure and in hopes that I can create something
that brings others pleasure.
=========
I have written like 30 books worth of words I never intend to publish. Sometimes I
just have a story I want to read and no current book on the market does it for me.
So I do it myself!
=========
I do both. I wanna be published but I’m not gonna lose my mind if im not. It’s not
a given. I write for fun first and foremost
==========
I write primarily to publish--whether that means traditionally, or self-publishing,
or posting it online for free. In my opinion, writing exists as an artistic form of
communication and there's really no point to writing if only you will ever evaluate
or experience it. If I were writing for myself, for fun, I'd just daydream, think,
or worldbuild because they are much easier than actually putting pen to paper.
========
I'd like to publish at some point, but everything I've written up to now is for fun
and for myself and my friends with no intention to publish.
===
Even if I don’t physically write any words down, I consider sitting and planning
the next chapter a good writing session. I write for fun. It started as just notes
and charts in my notebook to keep track of what’s going on. Then it evolved to
quick summaries, detailed synopses, and now fill on chapters.

I try to keep things as consistent as possible but I’m not afraid to retcon or just
ignore things that don’t line up or make sense because this is just for me.

I love my characters and the world I’ve created and I’m not going to stop any time
soon.
======
You can write for the same reasons you read. You never expect to get paid for
reading. Both are an entertaining mental exercise in imagination. Both can enrich
your mind, your self discovery, and understanding of others.

Making money from writing is a nice side benefit, but it's not why people start
writing in the first place.
======
I do. If I ever do decide to publish, it will 99% likely be anonymously or under
some pen name. But for now, I just write for the creative and expressive outlet of
it.

Its the same way for the music I make and the art I make. I dont plan to publish or
officially release any of it, but I enjoy doing it.
======
I do both. I wanna be published but I’m not gonna lose my mind if im not. It’s not
a given. I write for fun first and foremost

Does anybody have tips to be less easily exasperated when writing? I really do

===============================================
"Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us
who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this
gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, its just not that good. Its
trying to be good, it has potential, but its not. But your taste, the thing that
got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints
you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who
do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesnt
have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you
are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and
the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline
so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume
of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your
ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone Ive ever
met. Its gonna take awhile. Its normal to take awhile. Youve just gotta fight
your way through."
=================================================
I can't really relate to this at all tbf.

When I was an unsocial shut-in, writing was the very last thing on my mind. I only
started liking writing when I started liking hanging around people and doing stuff
in the real world all the time. My biggest issue these days is that I don't have
enough time to write due to all the responsibilities. But I don't mind it too much
because I love being out there.

Nothing beats the real world.

===================================================
“I hate writing, I love having written.”

That quote from Dorothy Parker resonates with me.

=================================================
Creation is quite difficult you literally are pulling somrthing out of your brain,
taking formless ideas and primal thoughts and solidifying it into the lexicon of
civilized man. Sounds pretty exhausting to me but idk.
================================================
I recently watched an interview with George RR Martin and Robin Hobb on the
struggles of writing. She confessed that she really dislikes writing the first
draft and finds that part of the process the most tedious and unpleasant. She said
she much rather re-write half of the 2nd draft because at least then she has
something tangible to work with. Makes complete sense to me.
==================================================
Perhaps because your brain is using a lot more energy (prob not the right word)
than physical sport. There's a different type of concentration and brainpower that
goes into each activity. Or it could even be on how much energy you're giving to
what you write.

I personally find it tiring when I can't write at all, 3 hours of typing would give
me an adrenaline rush to write more.

that's able to respond, or just send some of them. How many squadrons to send and
which raids to ignore, is all part of the learning process. Send too few squadrons
and they may be ineffective, and maybe even "massacred"; send too many squadrons
and while they may be able to cause damage to the Luftwaffe, they may be unable to
intercept raids later in the day. It's a difficult decision, which is what makes
the game so good.

Yes, watching a player advance a community from village to superpower is popular

too in LitRPG. A recommended read is reviewed here.

I write because (again, a lifetime of writing has made me this way), it's how I

angrily with their buddies about it and fume. Others get frightened. Others just
gullibly believe what's fed to them. I think "interesting, if true. I wonder why
that happened. Who are the actors in this drama? What happened in their lives to
make them behave that way? What if...?" And off I go, making sense of my thoughts
through creating fiction about the situation.

are your actions worth the risk. Worth a try!

https://old.reddit.com/r/writing/comments/13n3a5u/masterclass_is_it_worth_it/
I had it for a year and I watched almost all the writing and creative-related
videos. Overall, I have mixed feelings. I don’t really think it’s worth it. There’s
some nice things there, but most of the speakers don’t go much beyond the basic
stuff that you can get a million different (and much cheaper) ways. It’s not a
complete waste of money, but don’t expect anything life-changing.

I guess one key takeaway is that all those people, while very talented and
successful, don’t possess some kind of universal truth that makes your writing
better (and if they do, they sure aren’t telling it in those videos). If anything,
Masterclass inspired me to stop searching for the silver bullet that will fix my
writing and to just open my word processor and do the hard work myself.
================================================
LitRPG is one of the strongest selling genres on KU. I can’t stress this enough.
Even a shitty LitRPG can make good money. But LitRPG fans can be insane. We’re
talking Star Wars fan level, here.
====
A lot of them seem to be rules lawyers. They want the game logic in the books to be
sound. Which I kind of get. I read a lot of these and I sometimes think that no one
would put in feature A or spell B in a game but the writer does because it helps
the story.
====================================================
https://www.levelup.pub/what-is-litrpg
When it comes to understanding what is LitRPG, it is the early titles mentioned
above that helped define the genre. And what they have in common is an explicit
attention to the game mechanics of their respective worlds. Seeing the workings of
the game - the amount of damage done, the experienced gained, the choices after
levelling up - all proves very entertaining. What is LitRPG? Well it’s often the
reading equivalent of watching someone playing a game on Twitch or Youtube.

Typically, authors and readers of LitRPG enjoy a focus on the in-game

achievements of the characters as well as the way that the characters strategise
within the constraints of game rules that have been made explicit to the reader and
for them LitRPG has to contain text that tells the reader - as an aside from the
narrative voice - the current stats, levels, abilities, etc. of characters. Others
have coined the term 'GameLit' to cover books that are light on the game mechanics
and character progress.
=================================================
https://forum.quartertothree.com/t/litrpg-gamelit-books/157911/32
So, the defining characteristic (for me at least), is the protagonist having some
sort of RPG style stats and progression. There’s a few ways this comes up that I’ve
seen. Sometimes you have them getting transported to a world which behaves by RPG
style rules. Sometimes the world turns into one with RPG style rules. Sometimes
they are playing a VR MMO. Sometimes they go from playing a VR MMO to a world that
is what the VR MMO was based on…

But the anime trapped in an MMO stories I’ve seen really don’t care about the game
mechanics or game progression etc and LitRPG very much does. Some to the point of
having an updated multipage character sheet every handful of pages.

There's hardly ever any decisions to be made that actually matter but it tells SUCH

Also, I enjoy the rolling on a ton of charts. I don't know why. I just find it

=====================================================================
But I've found that Narrative chart driven games are without a question my favorite
type of solo game. It's just so relaxing, and it feels very much like playing some

all the scripted events going on , which gives a cinematic feeling to them.

Sharing my Kit for practical Hike and Solo RP

Hello everyone, hope you're all doing great !

I started doing solo RP a few months ago, and I wanted to "bring this show on the
road" and occupy myself during possibly hours long hikes.

I started with a webpage on mobile, but after a few hours the battery is giving
out, and I wanted to get something more practical, in order not to have a lot of
pages to scroll, click on small button to roll and change stats ahah. And the feel
of paper is nice too !

So, with my s/o we started thinking and designing something that could fit this,
the requirements were to have Rollable Dices, Oracle Tables and an easy way to
track Changing Stats. And a few rules reminder as a bonus.

Small tips I use to RP while walking: basically I'm going through the story in my
head or speaking some parts out loud. I try not to get too attached to names or
exact details (since I can't write them down), and rather focus on the events and
locations. Once I'm back home, I draw a little map with the few events that
happened, in order to get the ideas clear and easy to start from, on next session.

I hope this could inspire people that are in the same situation than me, and I want
to thank you all for your participation to this very nice hobby ! Also I think that
it will be very useful on group RP session, with the oracles and moves laid out.

The pictures should speak mostly for themselves :

============================================================
PRINCIPLES FOR SOLO PLAY
CHRONICLE YOUR ADVENTURES
When you play Starforged with other players, the shared conversation
helps create a story that lives beyond the game table. When playing solo,
the conversation is between you and the system. The mechanics and
moves are part of that conversation, but your character and your world
exist only for you.
This can make your story feel a bit fleeting. To ground your sessions and
make it easier to pick up where you left off, keep a record at whatever
level of detail you prefer. This can be simple bullet points in a text file,
a log in a virtual tabletop, a handwritten journal filled with sketches and
notes, a play report you share on a forum or blog, or even a streamed or
recorded session. There’s no wrong answer. Use whatever approach is an
enjoyable aspect of your play. If it feels like work, simplify.
============================================================
Do you prefer soloing from scratch or with prewritten material?
Scratch all day baby. Love rolling a random spark and going from there. I find with
pre-written I tend to veer towards the “goal” more than let my character get
immersed in the world around him. Many times i’ve had an adventure in mind and
after 2 days of Overland Travels I’m on a whole other quest, that seems a lot more
natural

That's the same problem I face with the pre written adventures. Sometimes I do use
them though- either as a an addition to the game, usually some small side quests.
It's extra help in worldbuilding too, as you can put, let's say, a village with
some NPCs of interest without that much work. But in general coming up with stuff
yourself feels more exciting and you don't feel the need to "finish".

From scratch. I really like the creativity and improvisational elements of game
play, shaping a world one scene at a time.

From scratch one roll at a time for me.

But the key is that I love representing chess as more than a game, chess is a way
of life. It improves patience, intelligence, critical thinking, decision making,
memory and many more things. With so many positive characteristics, not known to
Slovenia public or world, I am trying to show to non chess players that we are not
just sitting at the board for 5 hours. We are growing with each game.

Okay, by now, many of you have a lot of questions; how I did it, how much time
it took, etc... Let me tell you right now, getting to level 99 is by no means
easy at all; it requires a lot of patience, hard work, techniques, as well as
friends to help you.

Be turnyrų, be nugaletojų, t.y. be praktikos, šaškių

žaidimas negalėtų gyvuoti;

būti gerai pasirengę fiziškai;

Be to šaškėse, kaip ir

=======================

Nei vienas pradedantysis nesugeba nejudindamas lentoje šaškių teisingai

Be to reikia

...sets the scene, an exchange of dialogue, an interior monologue, some

the story in advance, but many writers prefer to improvise as they work.
This approach allows you to discover the story in much the same way
that a reader does.

=====================================================
Because it’s fun.
=====================================================
I write for myself. Ultimately, this is my creative outlet and the thing that keeps
me sane.
=====================================================
I just love fiction, it's one of the most enjoyable things in the world for me. So
I want to add my own version of it into the world, even if only I will see it.

Also, my story is probably my favourite story ever told... IN MY HEAD. Putting that
into writing and correctly communicating its ideas, tone, and what have you is the
difficult part, and it's what the stories that made me fall in love with fiction
objectively do better than me.
=====================================================
Both play and fiction are activities that we can engage with and express wishes
through. Exploration is in our genes, and fiction is a superb way to use these
detective skills of ours. Our genes make play, and therefore reading fiction,
enjoyable because they help us be interactive and manage our emotions.

Pvz Heavenly Sword Dragon Saber (wuxia) has crunch too

Mid-Tier Matchups # 23: Wan Chung Hok (DGSD) vs. Au Yeung Hak (LOCH)
It's a duel of pervs! Time-space shenanigans catapult Great Evil # 4 Wan Chung Hok
(DGSD) and Au Yeung Hak (LOCH) into the same time period, and both spot a very
beautiful young maiden that predictably stimulates the two lechers' lust. Who wins
the duel of the pervs?

And with chess - given position white and position black, analyze it, is it
winning, or which side has advantage

Turnbull concluded, "I can recommend this for a casual and not too serious

I'm at that point right now.

I am playing chess to work out my brain. It doesn't necessarily have to be fun for
me, but if it is, it's even better. Improving my chess is not my goal anymore, it's
rather not getting worse.

There are many people who abhor the very idea of drawing from reference photos.
They see it as a betrayal of real art. Others greatly admire the skill, patience,
and dedication involved in copying faithfully and long to do the same thing. Who’s
right?

Ding has his own approach: “I consider myself an academic, a scholar who really
likes to study, and I think I have found new ways to approach chess. When I reached
2,500 points on the international list [among the 700 best in the world], and
decided to raise my level, I realized that I had to accept the challenge of also
being very competitive.”

Playing Against Oneself

It’s doable but just hard to do. If done right and committed to you can end up
making plans for one side and then countering with the other side and countering
for the counter. I personally think it’s a good thinking exercise, maybe a warm up
it’s just very hard to commit to.

I grew up with JRPGs, I learned a lot and I shared powerful emotions and incredible
adventures: they're my greatest passion, second only to my love for tabletop RPGs.
I felt hatred for Kefka and his laughter; I screamed and cried during "that scene"
with
the kind Aerith and the brilliant Sephiroth; I felt the smell of gasoline and
clanging
of metal as I piloted Fei Fong Wong's mech and the Monado gripped in my hands
with each of Shulk's strikes; I jumped through time together with Crono, Marie,
Lucca
and Robo; I was among the Stars of Destiny in Tir's Liberation Army; I smelled the
gunpowder from Squall's gunblade; I was moved by Vivi's existential crisis and I
fell
in love with Tifa.
My whole generation fell in love with Tifa.
Whenever I finished a JRPG, I felt an emptiness inside. I wanted the plot to
continue,
I wanted the protagonists I loved and villains I hated to stay with me: every
single
time, I wished again and again for a tabletop RPG that would allow me to keep those
stories and emotions alive.
I tried many systems; I hacked and pasted together rules from different games,
reskinned like there was no tomorrow, created house rules, but it never worked.
I wanted an accurate way to play the JRPGs I loved, to create and experience new
stories in the style of my favourite genre with the people at my table, but I could
not
find anything that truly satisfied me.
Now, when I finish a JRPG and feel that familiar emptiness, I can simply schedule a
session of Fabula Ultima and fill it whenever I want.
I am very happy that Fabula Ultima is the first roleplaying game entirely produced
by Need Games. I still remember when Emanuele told me how they wished to write
a tabletop RPG based on JRPGs: I said "I know we're small today, but I'd love for
this
Fabula Ultima to be our first original game!".
And so it was.
To quote the greatest villain in the history of JRPGs (yes, of course I mean Kefka
Palazzo): "Son of a submariner!!!" You're still reading the foreword! Come on! Go
ahead, an airship awaits you to set sail for endless adventures...

I've played a lot of Elder Sign. When people ask about underrated solo games, I say
Elder Sign. When people ask for favorite Arkham Files or Cthulhu-themed games, I
say Elder Sign. When there's a question about whether to buy in to Eldritch Horror
or Arkham Horror, I still bring up Elder Sign. It's a game I absolutely love; I'll
swear until my last days it's the most decision-filled game in the FFG Cthulhu
lineup, and punches well above its dollar value against most other games. The sweet
combination of risk mitigation, resource management, and a nice difficulty curve
that appreciates skill over randomness (yes, despite it being a dice game) in the
small package has kept it in my go-to pile for business trips for years. Not the
base game alone, of course, but the Gates and Omens packs are what really nailed it
home. But it's not a game I would bother trying to play with people again; it's not
quite Mage Knight levels of "purely for solo", but my enjoyment has always been
very focused on solo.

Talisman:
The most fun I've had playing any boardgame.

If you beat the game on the highest Field Marshal difficulty, three additional
bonus levels will
be unlocked.

I played a lot more from 2004-FOF7, but my fondest memories were the TCY season's
where I was starting out and trying to find that needle in the haystack that would
fit my scheme, but not be highly touted, who would go on to dominate.

FOF 8 is the most fun I have had. As I have gotten a grasp of game planning, I have
really begun to enjoy putting together a scheme for my offense and defense for a
season. Sometimes it blows up in my face, but I have also had some real success
with other plans and made lesser teams better because of it.

Nice to hear the FOF stories and experiences from others. I'm new to the party as I
have only played FOF7 (SP only) and FOF 8 (SP and MP).

FOF8 is by far the most immersive and realistic experience in football simulation
that I've had so far. I've put lots of time to learn the basics and develop my
tools for analysis, and what I like is that I'm still learning new things.

FOF8 took me a lot longer than 7 to become straightforward in SP, and that
eventually led me to venture into MP territory. I love the experience so far.

Inspiration Needed!
I keep interest by moving clubs and/or setting myself certain challenges like only
signing players with 18+ aggression or not signing anyone, only signing foreigners,
having a Bielsa squad (a small squad), buying a squad then not selling/buying
anyone to see how far they can go.

I must admit, I much prefer very long games, seasons on seasons.

I set myself a challenge of taking Hartlepool from the Conference (National League
now) to the Premier League but had to win every division at the first
attempt....took me a loooong time. Getting to the Premier League was almost always
fine but winning the Premier League was always tough and the first time I did it I
won in on the very last day of the season! So tense after putting in so many hours
to get there.

I’m not on the cart just yet. The concern is really touching though. :)
I have in fact been very busy and doing a lot of new things and have been having a
great time. My apologies if I have disappointed anybody with the lack of actually
making games. I just needed a change and honestly after coming up with half a dozen
prototypes I realized that I wasn’t having fun doing it and it wasn’t really that
enjoyable playing them either.

I still love playing games though and being able to step away from design has let
me rekindle my love for them. Somebody should write a book on the patterns like
this where sausage makers come to abhor sausage. I’m envious of all the designers
out there who keep their passion for games and their love of working on games in
harmony.

And Yes, I’m still ganking in Cyrodiil. I play in spurts here an there. Just
finished a good stretch and now taking a break. Made Alliance Rank 48 and now
almost at 49 and my fifth star. I am pretty despised so I won’t give out my char
name. :)

I did not get serious about writing until about 3 years ago when I hit my early
60's.
I found it a way of expressing myself creatively, which became more important after
some medical issues which reduced my ability to get around.

https://old.reddit.com/r/chess/comments/13lg8tp/
dings_new_interviews_after_coming_back_to_china/
"After winning the championship in Kazakhstan, he posted on his WeChat Moments,
"Keep moving forward." A friend commented, "So you won't retire this time?" Before
this tournament, Ding Liren did indeed consider retirement. The thought arose due
to a sense of aversion that comes after playing chess for a long time, "Unable to
find more enjoyment, wanting to seek new happiness elsewhere."

I didn't even have chess books at first, I just played by myself, exploring.

When I play, I make discoveries, and that's fun.

At 2700+ level, when working on openings, I tend to spend hundreds of hours fine-
tuning my ideas.
That said, this book was designed to give you and your
friends a chance to explore your own stories, with your
own heroes, and very often, in your own unique Final Fan-
tasy world.

From GUM (Game unfolding machine)

How do you play Solo RPG?
If you played solo before, you may already know
the drill, so feel free to skip this section forward.
But, if you haven’t, how does it all work? For me,
playing Solo RPG, without a GM, resembles to
when I was just a kid: My parents would buy me
some action figure toys, and I would spend entire
evenings playing with them. I’d make up stories,
or create situations, I would imagine a location,
with houses, cars, trees, and other representative
environment assets, to set up various scenes.
I would highlight one character, voice act them,
saying what they say (out loud, on my head, or
mumbling), and then I would pick another figure,
and voice act their response, to talk to each other.
They would eventually take action, or fight some
enemies, or face hazardous challenges, and the
story would move forward. Finally, I took either a
break to come back later, or wrapped up the story
with an ending. This is already solo story-telling.
Now, we learned RPGs like Pathfinder, D&D, or
Shadowrun, as collection of rules that simulate
situations or help structure a narrative, and we
might not have a group for it, or might want to
play on our own pace, to explore our imagination.
What if we combined the kids with toys version,
with RPG rules? Well, that is playing RPGs solo!
You play one or more action figures, have them
act, roll dice, take risks, and deal with outcomes.
And yes, you do both the GM part, and PCs part.

Methods of playing
In the kid’s scenario, we played in our heads, or
by playing character voices out-loud. We also
brought physical action figures, and assets, to use
them for visual reference. But it isn’t the only way.
We could just as well go and theater of the mind
the whole thing. Another way is to hand-draw
important events of the game, or write the game
as a novel, slowly, carefully, and narratively.
GUM can be played in any of these ways, or any
combination of them. You may combine different
styles depending on the importance you want to
give a certain part, or to the level of detail you
want to give to certain event. For example, to
describe a location, you could write it down,
paying attention to details, before proceeding,
and do world building. While a fight, you may just
play it in your head, or table, using the RPG.
Take your time. It is your game. Not in a hurry.
Ludo Pachisi being played in Nepal

From DragonBane book:

Sitting by a fireplace in an old house by a lake in the woods,
as dusk turned to night outside, listening intently to my
older brother vividly describing the fierce orcs facing me.
Grabbing the strange and magical polyhedral dice, getting
ready to fight – or die.

C++20 compiler (just kidding)

On a more serious note, I personally enjoy learning algorithms and data structures.
The process by which you grasp a complex algorithm’s purpose is something
phenomenal to me. If you’re into that kind of thing, writing algos in C might be
fun.

If you’re more concerned about program architecture, code organization, I’d choose
games.

From DragonBane book:

A roleplaying game is a conversation. The Game-
master describes the scene, you describe how
your character behaves, the GM describes how
any NPCs react, you reply, and it goes back and forth.
That is how the story is told and progresses. But sooner or
later a decisive situation will arise, a point of no return, a
conflict that conversation alone cannot resolve. Then it’s
time to break out the dice and use one of your skills.
This chapter also describes heroic abilities, which
allow you to perform extraordinary actions that ordinary
people cannot.

Withholding Information and Suspense

Because plotting seems daunting to many writers, it’s important to
keep in mind that one of the fundamental principles of plotting is the
withholding of information. At the beginning of a plot, you want readers
to know very little—just enough to intrigue them—but at the end, you
want them to know everything. We might even say that plotting is the
mechanism by which the writer decides what information to withhold
early on, what information to reveal, and in what order to reveal it.

I will probably never stop learning about chess

For me it has been really nice to see the popularity of chess increase so much in
the last few years. Chess is like a really wonderful activity that combines
creativity and critical thinking, so regardless of level it has been really nice to
see the popularity increase.

I expect some people just enjoy the satisfaction of creating something, I guess.
Everyone needs a creative outlet as part of a satisfying life.

“We were looking to attract older people to the game. They should not play in tough
tournaments but rather spend their time solving chess problems," he said. "Working
with studies helps prevent Alzheimer's. If you are over 70, the stress of a
tournament can be dangerous to your health. (…) But a calm and reflective attitude
to chess is very useful, especially when you are very old. A healthy lifestyle with
a lot of exercises is also important."

Averbakh famously divided chess players into six groups, with examples of typical
players:

Punchers, who want to destroy their enemies: Botvinnik, Fischer, Korchnoi,

Kasparov, Carlsen
Fighters: Steinitz, Lasker, Bronstein, Morphy, Alekhine, Smyslov
Grandmasters, for whom chess is a sport and who return to their ordinary lives when
the game ends: Keres, Capablanca, Euwe
People who are interested in everything, cards, dominoes, etc.: Karpov, Petrosian,
Geller

Gameplay
Pirates! is a single-player, open-world game. The player receives a letter of
marque authorizing service as a privateer for the Spanish Empire, the Dutch
Republic, the Kingdom of England, or the French colonial empire in the Caribbean.
The player's loyalties may change over the course of the game; they may also hold
rank with multiple countries and may turn to piracy at any time. Gameplay is open-
ended; the player may choose to attack enemy ships or towns, hunt pirates, seek
buried treasure, rescue long-lost family members, or even avoid violence altogether
and seek to increase their wealth through trade. The game also has no predetermined
end, although as time goes on, it becomes more difficult to recruit crew members.
As the player character ages, fighting becomes more difficult, and deteriorating
health will eventually force the character into retirement. The game ends when the
player retires, at which point they are given a position in their future life, from
beggar to King's advisor, based on accumulated wealth, land, rank, marital status,
and other accomplishments.

The era of play is one of the choices given to a player at game-start. Different
eras provide a different challenge, as political and economic power shifts between
the four fledgling European empires. Choosing 1560 (the earliest choice) as the
starting year places the player in the Caribbean almost devoid of influence but
that of Spain, while 1680 (the latest choice) provides a mature Caribbean with many
non-Spanish colonies and an overall higher degree of activity in the region. The
other choices include 1600, 1620, 1640, and 1660, with the progressive effect of
reducing Spanish dominance in favor of the other nations, while increasing
seafaring traffic. Ship designs are also era-dependent, with some types of ships
appearing more frequently in certain eras and less in others, and certain ship
types being used near-exclusively by certain nations.

In this Macintosh version, graphics like terrain were painted with special glyphs
in a custom font.
The game tests a wide range of skills: hand-eye coordination during the fencing
sections, tactical ability during the land and sea combat phases, and strategic
thinking, for everything from choosing a wife to deciding when to divide up the
plunder. Moreover, each game is likely to take a different course, as most events
in the game are random, including the economic and political systems, and early in
the game, these can greatly affect future strategic options. In the course of the
game a player may try to tack in a frigate in order to run down a smaller and
faster pinnace, but must be fortunate enough to have the weather gage.

One of the most innovative features of Pirates! is the introduction of a dynamic

playing field. In Pirates! many of the most important factors which affect player
decisions are randomized at the beginning of the game and continue to shift during
gameplay. This not only creates a new experience each time the game is played, but
also requires the player to remain flexible, and be ready to exploit possibilities
when they occur. Changes happen whenever time passes and they are unrelated to
player actions. In fact, in this game in the series, random events do not have any
graphical representation, and the player can do nothing to prevent them.

The most important random factor in the game lies in the diplomatic relations
between the four nations laying claim to the Caribbean. Relations may differ
greatly from game to game, and can shift in an instant, creating and removing
opportunities, possibly even for long periods of time. The player generally
benefits from periods of war between two or more countries, because any aggression
towards a country's ships or cities, which occurs often if not specifically
avoided, will gain recognition with its enemies, prompting them to bestow the
player with land, titles, and other benefits. During peacetime, the player can only
benefit from the capture of pirates on the high seas, which is seen as favorable by
all nations, but is a rare occurrence.

Cities are also dynamic, with statistics like wealth and population fluctuating
constantly. The player can access any city's statistics. Knowing the statistics of
a city helps the player plan ahead, especially with regards to trading or any
desire to raid or conquer cities.

The original versions of Pirates! sported both disk and manual copy protections.
Users were asked the time at which various treasure ships were arriving at the
port. If the time was wrong, the game would continue, but at a much higher
difficulty level that would frustrate most people.

Development
In early 1986, Meier and fellow MicroProse designer Arnold Hendrick wanted to
create a role-playing adventure game, but Meier's business partner Bill Stealey was
skeptical of producing non-vehicle simulations.[1] The company planned several game
elements that it removed before release, including multiple NPCs per town, more
detailed sailing including fleet actions, and a subplot involving religion and
nobility.[2] Pirates!' success resulted in the similar Sword of the Samurai.[1]

With five successful years behind him, Microprose considered star designer Sid
Meier a selling point and chose to put his name on the box of his next game,
despite a shift away from combat simulators he had become known for.[3] According
to Stealey, the idea to add Meier's name came after meeting Robin Williams: "We
were at dinner at a Software Publishers Association meeting, and Robin Williams was
there. And he kept us in stitches for two hours. And he turns to me and says 'Bill,
you should put Sid's name on a couple of these boxes, and promote him as the
star'".[4]

Meier in his interview said that "Pirates! was actually inspired by a technological
trick" when "one of our programmers came up with a cool trick where we could create
images, pieces of art, by packing them into a font. And that allowed us to very
quickly bring in new pictures".[5]

Meier admits that Pirates! was not intended to provide an authentic, true-to-life
recreation of historical piracy: "Pirates! was designed more around your fantasy of
pirates than the actual reality. That allowed you to bring in all the stuff from
the movies, whatever you had read, whatever was in your imagination".[6]
