1 The surface area of a snowball is given by A=π r 2 .
(ii) Write the circle equation x 2+ y 2−12 x −6 y=−36 in the form ( x +a )2 + ( y +b )2=r 2.
Hence add the sketch of this circle to your sketch of the circle in part (i).
(iii) Describe the transformation which transforms the function x 2+ y 2=4 to the function
Hence add the sketch of ( x−6 )2+ ( y−8 )2=4 to your sketch of the circles in parts (i) and (ii).
(ii) Write the number of distinct ways in which the family can be seated around the table
( 5− √7 )
(iv) One elf wishes to express in the form p+q √ 7 where p and q are rational numbers.
( 3− √7 )
Show how this can may be done.
5 Santa is preparing to deliver presents to all of the good girls and boys around the world and wishes to organise
the presents into manageable piles for delivery. He has x 3 +3 x 2−18 x−40 presents to deliver.
(i) Use the remainder theorem to show the number of presents which would be left over if Santa divided the total
number of presents into ( x−10 ) piles.
(ii) Show that Santa could divide the total number of presents into ( x +5 ) equal piles.
(iii) To allow Santa further options for organising presents factorise x 3 +3 x 2−18 x−40 in to three linear factors.

6 A ski jump is being designed with a profile given by the curve with equation y= +x .
4
dy
(i) Find and hence find the gradient of the curve where x=−2.
dx
(ii) Find the equation of the tangent to the curve where x=−2.
7 When Santa’s sleigh takes off its height can be modelled by the curve y=2x −1 for x ≥ 0 . Where y is height
of the sleigh in metres and x is the horizontal distance of the sleigh in metres.

(ii) Show that V =75 x− x .
2
dV
(iii) Find the values of x for which =0.
dx
(iv) Hence find the maximum possible value of V .
9 A snowball is thrown. Its path can be modelled by the curve h=4−10 x−x 2 where h is the height of the
snowball and x is the horizontal distance.
(ii) Hence write down the equation of the line of symmetry of the curve.
(iii) Write down the maximum height of the snowball.
