Words allow you to create the quality, texture, smell, weight, size of
a thing, person, place, idea or feeling, even with your eyes closed. And
these words are called adjective.

Adjectives modify a noun or a pronoun. It presents an interesting or


creepy picture of a person, thing, place, feeling or event.

An adjective can either be one word or series.

One-word adjective – The clear water relaxes my mind.


The flowers are colorful.
The creepy house is near the forest.

Adjective in series - number, quality, size, shape, color, noun


The tourist received two, durable, big, rectangular, red, plastic
containers from the care takers of the house.

Kinds of Adjectives

1. Descriptive adjective – This kind of adjective answers the question


“What Kind”. It talks of quality, size, shape, and color of the
noun. If these qualities are found in one sentence, their order
must be: limiting adjective, quality, size, shape, color, participle.

2. Limiting adjective – This kind of adjective answers the question “which


one, how many, and how much.” Some of these are articles,
indefinite pronouns, and some of the noun
determiners.

3. Noun adjective – This refers to a noun used as adjective like ash gray,
snow white, baby pink.

4. Proper adjective- This adjective comes from a proper name, hence it


should start with a capital letter.

5. Quantitative adjective- This adjective indicates how much of something


is spoken about.
e.g. much, little, some
We need sufficient budget to acquire protective gears.

Adverbs modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. In effect, it
establishes the manner, place, time, frequency, cause and
reason of the word modified. Hence there is adverb of manner, adverb
of place, adverb of frequency, adverb of time, adverb of
reason, adverb of number, and adverb of degree.

Kinds of Adverb

1. Adverb of manner tells how an action took place.


2. Adverb of place tells where the action took place.
3. Adverb of time tells when the action took place.
4. Adverb of intensity or degree tells how much or to what extent or
degree a thing is ( almost, very, too, quite, rather, partly, so,
somewhat).
5. Numerical adverb tells the order of how a person does an act ( firstly,
secondly, etc.)
6. Adverb of frequency tells how often the action happens. There are six
main adverbs of frequency that we use in English: always,
usually (or normally), often, sometimes, rarely, and never.

EXPLAIN: How useful are adjectives and adverbs in delivering news? Explain
how people can benefit from their usage in news (balita).

ELABORATE: Search the web

1. Explore the internet on the topic or issue of Covid 19 pandemic or any tragedy
experienced by the Philippines or other countries. What common adjectives and
adverbs are used in the reports to describe the global experience of the
pandemic or tragedy? List at least 5 adjectives and 5 adverbs. Then, exchange
details with a classmate online. Check how many words are common in your list.
Then discuss why they chose those words.

A. On the blank, write the adverb and adjective that you can find in each of
the sentences below.
