Alcohol and Tobacco

-Pick up a study guide: 3
sheets and GO TO
WORK

-Take your NORMAL

Seat

A drug is any substance that

changes the functioning of the
brain and/or body.
Tobacco- Nicotine- Stimulant-
speeds up heart rate.
Alcohol- Ethanol- Depressant-
slows down heart and all body
functions.
They are ADDICTIVE and
DEADLY drugs!
NW student poem
Why do you drink?
Why don’t you think?
Think about your life.
Think about my life,
And how it can affect you
Or the people around you
You could hurt yourself
Or even me.
How could you live with that?
Can’t you see?
That you could die
Before me.
When you could have saved yourself.
A longer life with better wealth.
Just think of it now
Just think how
You could have lived
Instead of dying
Now I’m here all alone and crying
Alcohol Facts
1. Over 100, 000 Americans die each year from alcohol use.
2. It is an illegal drug use for people under 21. Gateway! Depressant! MYTHS?
3. One Drink = 12 oz beer = 5 oz glass of wine = 1.5 oz hard liquor.
Wine coolers and other drinks are made to taste better and look
safer, but they have as much alcohol as a beer. One can give a teen a
breathalyzer test reading of a .02. The law is ZERO tolerance.
ALCOHOL
 Beer (12 OZ), Wine (5 OZ), and Liquor (1.5 OZ) are
the three types of alcohol.
 Ethanol is the alcohol in alcoholic drinks.
 It is a depressant drug in small amount, in
large amounts it is a poison.
 Fermentation is the process used to make alcohol.
Type of Made Process % of
Alcohol From-(sugar) of Alcohol
&: making
Beer Barley, hops, Brewing 5.5%
grains (wheat
12 oz &rice)
Wine(champagne) Fruits Fortifying 15%
5 oz
Liquor Rum-sugar cane Distilling 40% or
Vodka- potatoes 80 proof
1.5 oz Whiskey- corn
Gin- juniper berry
Tequila- agave plant
 Half of PROOF is % of alcohol in liquor.
 The higher the % of alcohol the definition of a drink gets smaller.

How is tequila made?

It's made by harvesting, cooking, fermenting, distilling, and aging.

Planting and harvesting

The plant is left to grow 8 to 10 years, enough time for agave to produce honey.

Cooking and Milling into a Mash

The pinas will be weighed, cut up in halves or quarters, and cooked into a MASH.

The modern method involves using steel pressure cookers called autoclaves.

Fermentation
 The juices are now ready to be fermented.

 Producers will introduce yeasts. These can either be chemical catalysts or natural ingredients.

Distillation

A second distillation determines the percent of alcohol the tequila will have. Premium tequila will aim for
40% alcohol per volume or 80 proof; a bulk, mixto, or lower quality spirit instead aims for 55% alcohol
per volume or 110 proof.
Aging

1 to 3 years; and a new.

Bottling

4. Alcohol increases the risk of car crashes, falls, fires, drowning,

REACTION TIME
child/spouse abuse, murder, rape, assault/fights, and suicide.
Reason and physical abilities are impaired. Lack of judgment and
COMMON SENSE because of lowered
inhibitions (sense of right and wrong).
5. Ruin your appearance by gaining weight, malnutrition, & bad breath
6. Drinking can lead to intoxication and death.
ALCOHOL POISIONING- overdose of alcohol
7. Drinking puts your health, education, family ties, career, and social
life at risk.
8. Understand Media Pressure.
Stay clear on claims that alcohol means popularity and success.
What is real and what is not. Companies spend BILLIONS on ads to
pressure kids into thinking that getting drunk is how people have fun.
9. Myths: Having a designated driver, drinking at home, or drinking
only beer makes alcohol use safer. Consequence are more likely to
happen at home.
10. If you know someone with a problem, urge that person to get help
in a honest, respectful, caring, and intelligent way. DO NOT
FIGHT! They must realize that what they are doing is a problem.
Alcohol’s on ME
1. Get arrested. It is illegal for anyone under 21 to use any amount.
2. Shy people use to loosen up and frequently end up making fools of
themselves and do things they will regret. POOR CHOICES!
SELF-ESTEEM
3. Black Outs: People do NOT remember what happened while drunk.
4.- Hangover: Sickness after drinking alcohol. Headache, nausea,
vomiting, and other flu like symptoms.

5.- Social Problems: Family, Friends, School, Career, MONEY, and Jail.

6. Mental and Emotional problems: murder, suicide,

physical/mental/emotional abuse, and depression.

7.Alcohol goes directly into the bloodstream which is why it has

effects on every system of the body. Every organ is affected.
8. Reaction Time slows down, the time to react to hazards, causing accidents.
9. Addiction to Alcohol. Different types of alcoholics. Binge-Closet
Withdrawal (quit using) is painful physically and mentally/emotionally.
10. Kids with family members that are alcoholics are at risk of
becoming alcoholics by experimenting. Alcoholism is a disease
that can run in your genetic make-up (heredity)
11. Major Physical Health problem: Cirrhosis of the liver- liver hardens and
Cancer of the liver. Without the liver you die. The liver processes
toxins and poisons in the body to waste. It takes the liver 1hour per
drink to get rid of the effects of alcohol. Filter of the body.

 Long-term Physical effects: loss of appetite, malnutrition, weight gain,

ulcers, stomach problems, unable to conceive, heart damage,
loss of clear speech and balance (CNS), and memory loss (brain damage).
Damage to male & female reproductive system:
Cannot have children or kids can be born with disabilities (FAS)-
fetal alcohol syndrome
Draw and label the diagram in your HEALTH section of your notebook!
Draw entire body or use the one you started. Stick figure is fine!
Binge Drinking
* Binge Drinking is 4 drinks in a row for
Women and 5 drinks in a row for men.
A 5 drink standard underestimates the
problem for women. Teen drinking is
far worse than the definition.
* No social/responsible drinking because it is
illegal under the age of 21.
* ATTITUDE! Drinking is a challenge for under 21s
& young adults.
*“Party Lifestyle” or “Work Hard Play Hard”
Attitude towards drinking.
* Major drug problem for upper high
school and college students. 1/3 of high
school seniors and 44% of college
students binge drink.

* Risks: Total loss of control, ADDICTION,

And DEATH of an overdose.
Warning Signs for
Alcohol Abuse
Where Do You Find Help for Alcoholism?
Your Phone Book: Most phone books have a section in the front with government
and non-profit listings. There will be several places and hot lines listed there you can call.

Online: You can use the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Treatment Center Locator to find a place near you.
Your Local Hospital: Most major hospitals have drug and alcohol divisions and mental health
departments. Calling the hospital can help point you in the right direction for learning about detox and alcohol
rehab services.
A Local Church: Even if you are not religious or a member of a church,
they often have this information available and will be more than happy to help you.

School Guidance Counselors: Every school has a guidance department.

Contact them to see if they can recommend any services.

Help is NOT hard to find, just ask!!

VAPING/ECIG
10 Consequences of Vaping
1. Vaping Lowers the Body’s Ability to Fight Infections
both vape users and cigarette smokers showed signed of diminished activity in these genes, however the
vape group in particular exhibited decreased activity in 300 more genes in comparison to regular smoking!
This evidence suggests that compounds found in the liquid used to create the vapor has an
immunosuppressive effect on the body.

2. Chemicals in Vape Smoke Can Cause “Popcorn Lung”

systematically destroys the lungs’ smallest airways, resulting in a lung condition known as bronchiolitis
obliterans, or “popcorn lung.”

3. Lithium Ion-powered Vapes Can Blow Up

Kenneth explains that the explosion ripped a hole in his tongue, left his hands covered in burns, and took
out several teeth in the process. This explosion happened as a result of the overheating of a lithium ion
battery used to power the vape

4. The Levels of Nicotine are Loosely Monitored

few current measures in place to regulate the levels of nicotine, in addition to other harmful substances.

5. Accidental Ingestion of Vape Liquid Is Poisonous

6. Metal Particles are Found in Vape Smoke
metals such as tin, nickel, silver, iron, aluminum, silicate, and chromium were present in this vape smoke
in levels equal to, or greater than the concentrations found in traditional cigarette smoke. These
nanoparticles are known for penetrating deep into the respiratory system and reaching vulnerable sacks in
the lungs, often causing irreversible damage and permanent scarring. Internal bodily exposure to these
metals are also linked to risks for cancer and abnormal cell growth.

7. Vapes Also Contain Formaldehyde, or Embalming Fluid

Oh, you know, that stuff that is used to preserve dead bodies over long periods of time? That’s right.

8. Pneumonia is a Risk for Vape Users

Lipoid pneumonia from glycerin-based oils found in the compounds of e-cigarette vapor. After abstaining
from e-cigarette use following her hospital visit, the patient’s respiratory conditions improved
considerably.

9. E-cigarette Usage is Linked to Depression

strong association between individuals living with anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues, and
the use of e-cigarettes. Their findings indicate that people who experience these conditions are three times
as likely.

10. Some Safety Studies on E-Cigarettes Written by Industry-

Funded Scientists
scientists hired to uncover the dangers of vaping that are directly funded by the E-cigarette industry.
What are the Most Common Side Effects of Vaping?
 Dryness of the mouth
 Dryness of the eyes
 Dryness of the skin
 Dryness of the lips
 Sensitive or bleeding gums
 Cough and general throat irritations
 Headache
 Nosebleeds
 Dulled ability to taste food
 Inability to sleep
 Racing or abnormal heart patterns
 Ringing in the ears
 Nausea
 Constipation
 Unusual tiredness
 Loss of money

How to Quit Vaping

1. Never start! Don’t give in to pressure.

2. Nicotine gum, pills, patches.

3. Reduce the Juice!

Tobacco Facts
1. Smoking kills over 400,000 Americans each year.

2. 3,000 kids start smoking every day.

It is an illegal drug use for people under 18.

NICOTINE- addictive drug. Speeds up heart. Stress on CV system.
CARBON MONOXIDE- gas that limits O2 in body- High Blood Pres
TAR- sticks where smoke cools & contains
Carcinogens
*cancer causing substances
*There are OVER 8000 chemicals found in tobacco! Over
80 of them are known
to cause Cancer!
Tumor- lump or mass of cells that kills healthy tissue

BENEFITS THAT OCCUR AFTER

SMOKING THAT LAST CIGARETTE

It Is NEVER Too Late To Quit!

After 20 minutes: Blood pressure and pulse rate drop
to normal
After 8 hours: Carbon monoxide level in the blood
drop to normal, oxygen level increases
to normal
After 1 day: Chance of heart attack decreases
After 2 days: Nerve endings start to regrow, the
ability to smell and taste is enhanced
After 1 year: Chance of heart disease is half of that of
a smoker
After 10 years: Chance of death from lung cancer is
similar to a nonsmoker, pre-cancerous
cells are replaced in the body
After 15 years: Risk of heart disease is that of a
Nonsmoker

Tobacco’s Effect On Me
