Instructor’s information • Dr. Trần Hương Lan-Faculty of Applied Science • Email: [email protected] • When writing email to me, please put “Calculus 1-<Subject>” in the subject line. Course information • Course code: MATH132401E • Course title: Calculus 1 • Number of credits: 3 • Course prerequisite: Calculus 1 • Textbook: Calculus (chapters 1-5), 6th edition, Strass, Bradley, Smith Course website • Textbook, lecture notes, videos, assignments, quiz, sample exams: see on the course webpage https://fhqlms.hcmute.edu.vn • You will need a username and a password to log in. • The videos are provided as a support and should not be used as a substitute for attending class. Topics • Functions and graphs • The limit of a function • Continuity • Derivative of a function • Rate of change • Applications of the derivative • Integral of a function • Method of integration • Applications of the integral • Differential equations • Numerical integration Expected learning outcomes 1. Define, graph, and classify functions; Determine domain and range of a function; Recognize composite functions; Define inverse functions 2. Decide if a limit exists; compute the limit of a function 3. Decide if a function is continuous; apply continuity theorems 4. Compute the derivative of a function 5. Apply derivative to solve problems related to rate of change 6. Apply derivative to solve problems involving: optimization, linear approximation, mean value theorem, graph sketching, computing limits 7. Find the antiderivative of a function; define definite integrals; Explain the relation between definite integrals and antiderivatives 8. Apply integral to solve problems related to motion, area, average value 9. Solve and apply first-order separable differential equations 10. Use numerical techniques to approximate an integral Method of study • Attend class (3 hours a week). • Ask questions during class. • Ask questions using FHQLMS forum or send email to me. • Attend exercise class (1 hour a week). • Read content before going to class. • Do a lot of assignments, quizzes in order to master the concepts and acquire problem solving skills. • You must FOLLOW THE FHQLMS page for materials, quizzes, assignments, extra credit projects. What is NOT important? • Memorizing lots of formulae (materials are allowed during tests). But you should know WHEN to use formulae, and HOW. • Writing down all the decimal digits that the calculator gives you. • Taking copy notes on everything I say-unless that helps you to understand the material. Your TEXTBOOK contains many more words than I will explain you during the course. Method of assement • Graded activities: – Roll call (5%) – Tests (2 tests=20%) – Homework (10 sets =20%) – Quizzes (5%) – Extra credit projects (up to 10%). – Final exam (50%) • Ungraded activities are used to monitor the progress of students: exercises to be completed during the class, questions to the students, answer of students question during class and during office hours. General policy • Absence in class exams or quizzes is not accepted and students will not have a chance to do them again. • Whether an absence is excused or unexcused is determined solely by the instructor. • Students are asked to ensure a spirit of complete honesty and a high standard of integrity. • There will no tolerance for cheating or plagiarism. The punishment is determined solely by the instructor. Planning Week Chapt.
