Question 8

Mr Finegrass needs to water a field at Dabestatspeling High. He has a sprinkler that sufficiently
covers everything within a 7m radius evenly with enough water for the grass of that area in a 10
minute period. He is only working from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and he only has one sprinkler. The field is
slightly non-standard being 48m by 108m.
He realises that if for every 6m, 18m, 30m and 42m on the short side he places his sprinkler at all of
6m, 18m, 30m, 42m, 54m, 66m, 78m, 90m and 102m on the longer side, he will get most of the field
watered and be able to leave for home on time.
Each sprinkler point is in the middle of a 12m by 12m square. The sprinkler will water an area over
each side of the square of approximately 4.88m2 (into an adjacent square or the outside of the field).
Find the percentage of area of the field that is not watered. (Correct to 2 decimal places) 2
