Life and Education

• Achebe was born in the Igbo town of


Ogidi in Eastern Nigeria, on
November 16, 1930, when Nigeria
was a British colony and is father was
a Christian catechist.

• His writing showcases factual inside


accounts of modern life in Africa as
well as its history.

• He has helped reshape the


perception of African culture and
place in world affairs.

• Widely recognized as one of the most


influential African writers of all time.
• At the university he dropped his English name
in favor of the Igbo name ‘Chinua’, short for
Chinualumogo.

• He switched majors in college, as he originally


was pursuing a medical degree.

• After graduating in 1953 he joined the NBC as


a producer of radio talks and in 1956 he went
to London in order to attend the BBC Staff
School.

• He decided to submit the manuscript of Things


Fall Apart and the novel was published in 1958
by Heinemann.

Things fall apart


A narrative that uses tragic devices to tell the story of Igbo
people.
The main character, Okonkwo, fits into the tragic hero
