Upon reaching the meeqaat point, it is recommended to perform ghusl (wash the
entire body), and for males to apply fragrance to the body. These are done prior to
making the intention to assume the state of Ihraam.
In the state of Ihraam, a male is to wear an izaar (for the lower half of the body)
and a ridaa’ (for the upper half of the body), and it is recommended that they
both be white and clean.
In the state of Ihraam, a female may wear any normal attire that covers her as
prescribed by Islam’s teachings, with the exception of the aforementioned
garments that:
Cover the face with a niqaab (or anything else specifically tailored to fit
the face and leave an opening for the eyes).
Wearing gloves
Niyyah (Intention): Within the heart, one is to intend that he is beginning the rites of
‘Umrah or Hajj that he has set out to perform, and it is permissible to verbalize that as
well. If one intends to perform ‘Umrah, he may say,
Labbaikallahumma 'Umratan
When beginning each circuit, make a sign with your right hand towards The Black
Stone, and recite –
ِبْس ِم ِهَّللا َو ُهَّللا َأْك َب ُر
After turning toward the Black Stone, one then proceeds to his right to begin Tawaaf
and he keeps the Ka‘bah to his left.
Men should walk briskly (Raml) during first 3 circuits only, the remaining 4 circuits are
done at a normal pace completely around until 7th circuit.
While in Tawaaf between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone, one is to say,
((Our Lord, we beseech You to grant us good in this world, grant us good in the hereafter,
and protect us from the torment of the hellfire)) [2:201],
Once Tawaaf is complete, cover your right shoulder and ofer 2 rakaats
anywhere behind the Station of Ibraheem – or anywhere in the Haram:
Recite Surat al-Kafirun in 1st rakaa and Surat al-Ikhlas in the 2nd rakaa.
(After reciting Surat Al-Fatihah)
Innas-safaa wal marwata min sha'aa'irillaahi faman hajjal baita 'awi`tamara falaa
junaaha 'alaihi an yattawwafa bihimaa wa man tatawwa'a
khiran fa'innAllaha shaakirun 'aleemun
((Indeed, the hills as-Safaa and al-Marwah are among the defining marks of Allaah’s religion which He
designated as sites where He is to be worshipped. Thus, when someone comes to this House for Hajj or
‘Umrah, there is no sin upon him for performing Sa‘y between the two of them)) [2:158].
Upon reaching as-Safaa, one stands on it such that he can see the Ka‘bah. He faces
the Ka‘bah, raises his two hands in supplication, praises Allaah, and calls upon Allaah
using the words narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar - laa illaaha illallahu wahdau laa shareekalah -
lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu - yuhyee wa yumeetu wa huwa 'alaa kulli shai'in qadeer - laa
ilaaha illallahu wahdahu laa shareekalah - anjaza wa'dahu wa nasara ' abdahu wa
hazamal ahzaaba wahdahu
“There is none worthy of worship except Allaah alone, without any partner.
To Him alone belong all dominion and praise, and He is able to do all things.
There is none worthy of worship except Allaah alone. He fulfilled His promise,
aided His worshipping servant, and vanquished the alliance of enemies by Himself.”
One is to repeat that three times and also make any personal Dua to Allaah in between.

3. Sa'y
One then performs seven laps of Sa‘y. From as-Safaa to al-Marwah is one lap, then
from al-Marwah to as-Safaa is a second lap.
In the area between the designated green markers, a male is to run, but without
causing any harm to others around him. That is to be done in all seven laps.
4. SHAVING HEAD/TRIMMING
After completing Sa‘y:
A male is to either:
shave the hair on his head or
shorten it
A female is
to gather her hair and cut the length of a fingertip (about 2 or 3 cm) from the
end.
This should not be done in marwah, but rather when back at the hotel.
With that, the rites of ‘Umrah are completed, one exits the state of Ihraam, and the
acts that were impermissible during Ihraam return to being permissible.
Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest, How perfect He is, The
One Who has placed this (transport) at our service, and we ourselves would not have
been capable of that, and to our Lord is our final destiny. O Allah, we ask You for birr
and taqwaa in this journey of ours, and we ask You for deeds which please You. O Allah,
facilitate our journey and let us cover its distance quickly. O Allah, You are The
Companion on the journey and The Successor over the family, O Allah, I take refuge
with You from the difficulties of travel, from having a change of hearts and being in a
bad predicament, and I take refuge in You from an ill fated outcome with wealth and
family.

O Allah forgive our living and our dead, those who are with us and those who are absent, our
young and our old, our menfolk and our womenfolk. O Allah, whomever you give life from among
us give him life in Islam, and whomever you take way from us take him away in Faith. O Allah, do
not forbid us their reward and do not send us astray after them.
O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him and give him strength and pardon him. Be generous
to him and cause his entrance to be wide and wash him with water and snow and hail. Cleanse
him of his transgressions as white cloth is cleansed of stains. Give him an abode better than his
home, and a family better than his family and a wife better than his wife. Take him into Paradise
and protect him from the punishment of the grave [and from the punishment of Hell-fire].

Peace be upon you all, O inhabitants of the dwellings (i.e. the graves), amongst the
believers and the Muslims. Indeed we are, Allah willing, soon to follow (to die also),
we ask Allah for well-being for us and for you.
