system is functioning as intended by the design.
HVAC system will be designed to control temperature, humidity, fresh air requirements, noise level and clean-
ness of the environment to the specified level. Also various pressurization levels will be maintained in differ-
ent rooms/areas to avoid cross contamination of the environment. The air distribution system in conjunction
with existing furniture of the building and the circulation of people will be prepared.b HVAC system will take
into account the following:
The outside Building environmental design conditions and the inside design conditions of each room (temper-
ature, relative humidity, fresh air requirements, air change per hours, relative pressurization, air clean class) as
well as the building thermal characteristics are studied, discussed and selected. Indoor design temperature and
relative humidity should be maintained within comfort zone requirements to provide optimum comfort to the
occupants. ASHRAE gives the comfort zone (dry bulb temperature and the relative humidity) for summer and
winter. These zones are shown on the Psychrometric chart as given in the following figure. Also, ASHRAE
2007 Application Handbook give the recommended inside design temperature, relative humidity, and fresh
air requirements for the different functions spaces in the building. These sources will be used in the design to
select the inside temperature and relative humidity for the different spaces of the building.
These design conditions in addition to the building thermal characteristics are used to calculate the block cool-
ing load of the building as well as the cooling load for each room and space in the building. These cooling
loads are used to estimate zone by zone, room by room and the entire building chilled water and conditioned
air demands. A computer thermal model will be developed using the Ellite and HAP softwares to analyses the
building thermal performance and carry out steady state and dynamic cooling load calculations.
According to the building total cooling load, the chillers plant including water cooled centrifugal chillers,
chilled water pumps, chilled water piping system, condenser water piping system, expansion tanks, fittings
and control valves will designed to provide the chilled water demand of the building. The building will divided
to numbers of zones (HVAC zones). Each zone comprised of several rooms and spaces. Each zone is served by
different HVAC terminal air system. The rooms of each zone are selected to verify the following requirements:
June-2014 9
• The rooms have similar on/off HVAC operation/stop requirements.
For each building, the different alternatives of the HVAC system recommended to service this application are
studied, discussed and compared to select its most appropriate HVAC system. The selected system is then de-
signed. The precise configuration of the HVAC system must be selected and designed to satisfy the following
requirements of the system:
• Cost effectiveness.
• Minimum equipments space requirements
• Efficiency and energy conservation.
• Coordination with other design elements.
• Flexibility of installations.
• Simplifying installations, operation and maintenance.
• Fit the architectural of the building
• Hose station distributed on protected area and it shall be distributed in a manner that suits the length of hoses.
• Portable fire extinguisher
• Clean agent system of special hazard fire suppression applications: FM-200 is a gaseous clean, colorless,
odorless, safe, fast and electrically non-conductive agent. Automatic FM-200 system is used in all electrical
rooms. It suppresses fire without affecting the available oxygen. Hence, allowing personnel to see and breathe.
• CO2 suppression system of generators and transformer room
• Fire protection system shall be provided in the outdoor and within the Building, as required by the fire load and
the degree of protection necessary. The building shall be provided with fire water tank with boosting pump to
satisfy pressure requirements. The fire fighting systems shall include:

• Free-standing hydrants that are connected directly to fire water pipeline network shall be available for fire
fighting outside the buildings
Pumps shall supply water from a storage fire tank to feed the fire hose stations and sprinklers through the pip-
ing system controlling the flow via fire valves. The equipment and installation shall strictly comply with the
current provisions of the NFPA standards. Different fire protection systems are used for the different areas of
the building. The following Table summarizes the proposed fire protection system for each area application.

Proposed fire protection systems for the Building Applica-
tions
The domestic water system of the building will be designed to supply its domestic demand of cold and hot
water at the required flow rate and pressure with minimum noise and risk of leakage. According to the interna-
tional standards and codes, the total daily cold and hot water demands of the building will be estimated based
on its rooms capacity.
The domestic water system of the building will consists of city municipal main domestic water supply line
(extended soon), a main water meter cabinet, underground domestic water storage tank, booster pump sets, fil-
tration unit, local separate electric water heaters, water distribution pipes networks (mains, risers and branch-
es) to supply domestic water to all the building fixtures and equipments.
The sanitary drainage system of the building will be consists of drainage piping system for collecting soil and
waste water from toilets, drainage piping system for collecting waste water from pantry and kitchen sinks and
laundry equipments, piping system for collecting waste drainage from laboratories, piping system for collect-
ing condensate from mechanical plants of HVAC system and FCU’s of the building, soil stacks, waste stacks,
HVAC condensate water stack, vent piping system, vent stacks, inspection chambers, gully traps, sump pit,
sump pump sets and underground main drainage pipe lines. The sanitary drainage system will be designed to
have the following characteristics:

charges from sanitary fixtures quickly and quietly without the risk of injury to the health of the occupants
of the building.
• Floor drains will be provided in wet areas such as toilets , kitchen and bathroom.

June-2014 11
hind the roof
• Soil, waste and vent stacks will be polyvinylchloride (UPVC) Schedule 40. UPVC based materials will be
avoided for external use due to degradation caused by UV radiation in sunlight
• Inspection chambers and gully traps are used to collect the soil and waste water drainage from soil and
waste drainage and deliver it to the city drainage network through underground main drainage pipe
The storm water drainage system of the building will designed to drain the storm water collected on its roof
and discharge it to outside of the building rainwater retention areas by means of internal storm stacks. The
storm water drainage system is suggested to consist of roof drains, storm water drainage pipes and storm
stacks. The storm water drainage system will be designed to have the following characteristics:
• Frequently spaced and supplementary roof storm water drains are used to allow for possible blockage of
some drains.
• The roof drains will be used to serve a portion of the building roof area. This area should be sloped in the
direction of its storm water drains.
• The storm water pipes connect storm water drains to the storm water stacks and free discharge to outside
the building.
