Learning Episode 4

Participate and Assist

What five problems have you identified from the words that you have encircled? Make a
statement. Write in the space below.

The problems I identified are:

1. Attendance
One of the problems that I have identified was attendance. Based on my assistantship and
observation for the past few weeks, absenteeism was the major problem of the teachers. Some
of the teachers did not know the reason why the students were not present in class.
2. Ventilation
Lack of facilities was the main problem that schools need to solve. Nowadays, the climate was
changing. There were times that students lost their consciousness because of extreme heat.
There was no proper ventilation in the learning space.
3. Discipline
Sometimes students forgot that the person facing them was an instructor. Proper use of words
was not observed. There were instances that even the teacher was discussing in front, learners
continue chatting with their classmates.
4. Financial
Aforementioned was the problem regarding the attendance. Financial was one of the reasons
why students can`t afford to go to school. They do not have enough finances, especially for
transportation and food.
5. Motivation
Different students varied in terms of state in life. Most of the students have family problem and
they lacked motivation at home. This was the reason why teachers try to motivate and inspire
them through their own life experiences and story that made them stronger and successful.

Excellent! Let us see how we can assist and learn at the same time.

Suppose the problem you have spotted is: COMPREHENSION.

How can you assist your mentor, after knowing that the learners have difficulty in
comprehension?

Make a Choice for your ACTION.

A. Conduct a tutorial lesson.

B. Show video lessons to help enhance comprehension.
C. Make a learning task to develop comprehension.

Difficulty in
Comprehension of Reading Conduct a Tutorial

The Action is:

1. Teach comprehension skills, directly.
2. Remind students re-read to build fluency.
3. Illustrate higher order language skills, refrain from yes or no questions.
4. Teach grammatical rules that make up language.
5. Develop decoding skills to automaticity- let them have “cognitive space”.
6. Teach the text structure.
7. Use audio books in teaching language.

Analyze

Let us try to look into the following scenarios in the daily life of a teacher. This scenario
might also be similar to the class you have observed and noticed.

Scenario A: Miss Fely is a grade four teacher in typical elementary school. She has forty learners in
her class. One half of them cannot classify animals into vertebrates and invertebrates. She has been
repeating the same science lesson for two weeks, yet no progress was observed. The situation has
been bothering to Miss Fely.

 Can you identify, Miss Fely`s problem? Miss Fely`s problem is one half of her class cannot
classify animals into vertebrates and invertebrates and she has been repeating the same
science lesson for two weeks, yet no progress was observed.
 Can you find a solution to solve her problem?
a. She can try other teaching pedagogy that she thinks will fit to the students.
b. Avoid a single answer question like yes or no questions. In this case, students will try to
think critically.
 What solution can solve Miss Fely`s problem?
How?
Since half of the class is not learning, the teachers can retrieve ideas to students on what
technique they can learn. In this case, she will try other teaching pedagogy that suits to her
diverse students. And yes, it will solve her problem.
Are they matched with the problem?
Yes, since the problem is learning, the solution will be the teaching.

Scenario B: Sir Ryan teaches in a disadvantaged urban community. Most of his learners come from
families that are disrupted, either with single parents or with their guardians who stand only as
parents. They are deprived of the necessary food, clothing, and shelter.

 Can you identify the most probable teaching- learning problem/s in the class of Sir Ryan?
a. Absenteeism
b. Lack of interest in learning
 Can you propose a solution to solve one of the problems that have you identified?
Since the problem is finances, the teachers in that specific school can find local and private
people that offer scholarship and donations. They can also lift the problem to the local
government unit for them to act for this. For sure the LGU will act for this because they know
those students- young people are the future of the community.
