CHAPTER I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction
English is the world language where it is the channel of communication.Learning English

subject is not easy, we need to understand, to study and most especially to learn. Nowadays,

English subject is present in every corner of the world. Most especially in school wherein,

teachers taught the students how to read and enhance their reading comprehension.

Reading comprehension is one of the best ways to improve their level of proficiency of

the students. Through reading comprehension, students will know what they are reading all about

and also reading comprehension can give a big impact to the students most especially in their

grades for they will gain more knowledge of what they’ve learned Reading Comprehension can

help the Academic Achievement of the students in English subject. According to (Cullinan in

2000) “Reading can be explained as cognitive activity in which readers takes part in a

convention with the author through text.” In reading the readers can get the main idea of what

authors message on the text. It is very important for us to learn the technique on how to read

most especially reading comprehension in order to reach or to improve the level of proficiency

most especially to improve academic achievement in English. But nowadays most of the will

keep reading of different text without an understanding of what is it all about. According to

Lorraine Grahan and Ann Bellert (2009) students with learning disabilities after experiencing

poor comprehension due to their failure to read strategically and spontaneously monitor their

understanding while reading. The students with have this poor reading comprehension because of

the law strategically and spontaneously monitor of their understandings get more information

and knowledge (Banidell, 2017).

In the Philippines according to Rayner, Foorman, Pesetsky, and Seidenberg (2001) stated

that reading comprehension is the level of understanding of a text. Understanding comes from

the interaction between words that were written. According to star Pampanga one of the

problems that best education today is they are having their roots entangled with reading

especially at the secondary level. In this scenario, it clearly shows that any or another educational

effort of all levels that was not associated with the development of reading skills moreover. It is

also known in fact that tributes to the students that their academic performance is poor and lack

of reading skills.

In the Sisters of Mary School-Girlstown Inc., there are some factors that influence the

proficiency advancement in academic performance and reading comprehension of the students.

Some of the students lack understanding and internalizing some of the unfamiliar words that’s

one of the reasons why students are having a low grade in academic performance in English. Due

to this, the researchers further investigate the relationship between proficiency level and

academic achievement in English.

Theoretical/ Conceptual Background

In reading some text or books we need our knowledge in order to comprehend it properly. In

reading we really need this stock knowledge in order for us to understand what we are reading

so there is a theory that can support it which is the Schema Theory by Rumelhart(1980), and

cited by Richard Anderson (2013) stating that explanation of how readers we prior knowledge to

comprehend and learn from text. And also comprehending text in an interactive process between

the readers' background knowledge and the text. Reading Comprehension is a skills in which the
student needs to enhance, in order to enhance this skills learners need to read more exposed

themselves to different reading materials just like the grade eleven student in the Sisters of Mary

School Girlstown Inc. they have this English subject in which they read different academic text

in where they need more knowledge in order to comprehend it properly. Some of the grade

Eleven students have this difficulty in reading some

text. If the student will read different reading text or materials, even though they are not told to

do so, they will obtain this advance knowledge by this it easy for them to comprehend different

text because they have already this stock knowledge. So the grade eleven student needs to read

more reading materials, in short, they must have this hobby of reading different materials in

order to gain more advanced knowledge so that it is easy for them to comprehend the different

text there English subject so they have this great achievement in their academic performance. If

the grade eleven student will excel in their academic performance. If the grade eleven student

will excel in their academic performance in English there is a great possibility that they will be

hired in their on the job training for they will have fluent into the interview.

CHAPTER II
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND RELATED STUDIES

Related Literature
Reading Comprehension is the act of understanding what you are reading is an
intention active, interactive process that occurs before, during and after a person reads a
particular piece of writing is one of the pillars when a person reads a text he/she engages in a
complex array of a cognitive process. According to (Chodkiewicz 2011, Hadley 2003, Wallace
2007) emphasize that the importance of selecting materials has a purpose in both teaching and
testing reading comprehension without a worry in the unfamiliar structures and vocabulary. The
English teacher of grade eleven student is selecting proper reading materials for the grade eleven
not to give the burden but to add up some unfamiliar words that will build-up to their mind and
add up to the vocabulary.

According to (Nasaje 2003 et.al) Reading comprehension has a big impact to the
students to their reading comprehension if learners are exposed to the readers that could help the
readers to enhance the high level of reading comprehension. The students are given by their
teacher different academic text for them to enhance their reading skills because the academic text
is a high-level text, it is not the same with the other text which the children read.

Ivan Braten and Helge Stromso (2007) stated that reading is described as an
interactive process where comprehension is a result of a joint effort from the text properly so that
they can communicate with each other.

Maagero and Selp Ianhossen(2006) stated that it is decisive to make the students
accomplish reading with comprehension is essential importance not only in school but in
everyday life, whether it is needed for something gaining, something new, increasing knowledge
or seek for information, one who has to be able to read with comprehension.

The grade eleven students are reading the text comprehensively in which their
English teacher give them so that they will gain high grades is the key to have a scholarship in
their college the student is also absorbing the unfamiliar word so that they encounter the same
words they are not ignorant of it.

Bauman (2008) says that reading comprehension there is a good background about
the connection of between pupils. To have a good vocabulary will become ascertain and reading
comprehension of the students and increase their study between reading comprehension. In
reading comprehension of the students and increase their study between reading comprehension.
In reading different reading materials the students increase their study between reading
comprehension. In reading different reading materials the student can enhance their vocabulary
and it can help them to comprehend the different academic text where it can help the student to
increase their grades in English.

According to Schinske and Tanner (2004) as they grew of school rapidly in the size
and the number in 19 and 20 century the grades are the primary made and become the
communication among the institution and it is the way to coordinate with each other. Nowadays
grades are the value of many student and teacher because it is the basis if they study hard on their
lesson and it is also the basis to the teacher if the student understands there discussion.

RM Knowczyk (2017) stated that to compare the proficiency progress and effort of the
student to their peer typically show a high level of interest in their learning. The student has this
different grades, so they tend to compare their grades to one another, and those who have the low
score they are now striving hard to get high grades for they are learning from the lesson that they
have.

Related Studies
Hong-Nom and level (2006) stated that in a study an language learning strategy use

revealed that students that more strategic language learners advanced along the proficiency

continuum faster than less strategic ones. The student has this different learning strategy for them
to comprehend the different text because they have this different learning strategy that is why the

grade eleven students of the Sisters of Mary school is very advanced to the outside student

because they are more strategic than them

Yau (2005) stated that in another study found out that proficient readers employ

more sophisticated approaches to reading than less. Proficient readers for instance in this study

the skilled reader employed strategies of inference, summarization, and synthesis during and

after reading while the skilled reader applied bridging inferences, paraphrasing, and repetition. It

implies that the grade eleven student is given more text so that their brain will be exposed and

they will be more strategic in reading some text for the future

Van don Breek and Espin (2012) reading comprehension is composite interaction among

self-operating and strategic mental apprehension process that enables the reader to make a

mental description of the text. It implies self and forming a meta description. Which is they are

making their own strategy.

According to Cromly (2006) that to measure the science achievement in the program on

International Student Assessment (PISA) was designated to require to use reading emphasizes

the high correlation between science achievement and reading. It implies that to measure the

academic achievement of the student is reading because if you don’t know how to read then you

will not gain knowledge.

states that in terms of Academic Achievement depend upon the intelligence and study skills

CHAPTER V
SUMMARY, FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Summary
This study was pursued in order to give sufficient information on the relationship
between the reading comprehension and the academic performance of the Grade 11 students-
respondents in the Sisters of Mary School-Girlstown, Inc. S.Y. 2018-2019. During the data
gathering, out of 220 students, only 155 respondents answered. The 220 respondents were
randomly selected through stratified random sampling from the total population of 489 students.
A standardized instrument was adapted and modified first year Engineering students of Quest,
Pakistan through Metacognitive strategies to gather necessary data which is to determine the
respondents level of Reading comprehension and the level of Academic performance. Likert
scale, PPMC, and t-test were used during the descriptive analysis and inferential analysis of the
study.

Findings
Level of reading comprehension as perceived by respondents

On the course of analysis, one of the respondents get a high proficient in Reading

comprehension, 3.59% whose proficient in reading comprehension, 3.22% whose Moderately

Proficient in Reading Comprehension and none of them posses low and not Proficient in Reading

Comprehension. Based on the findings most the respondents required Proficient in Reading

Comprehension.

Level of Academic Performance of the respondents

Through further analysis, 25.97% had an outstanding academic performance, 7.30% performs

satisfactorily.None of them belongs to fairly satisfactory and with those did not meet

expectation. This implies that majority of the students are had a very satisfactory performance in

their academics.

Correlation between the level of Reading Comprehension and the level of academic

performance in their academics.

In the analysis, the researchers found that the pearson product moment correlation is

(r=0.025) which implies that there is a weak between the level of reading comprehension and

academic performance. Through t-test, it was also found that the level of reading comprehension

does not significantly affect the academic performance of the respondents with t-value of o.65.

Conclusion
To use as a ground on the findings of the study the following conclusions are thereby stated:

1. The level of reading comprehension does not affect the academic performance of the

respondents
2. There are other factors can be affected the most of the academic performance of the students-

respondents
