Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

Teaching methods significantly correlate a student's academic

performance, with strategies ranging from inquiry-based to lecture-style. These

methods vary based on subject content, student age, and objectives. Academic

performance measures a student's success in a subject or course, including

grades, exam scores, and comprehension. It assesses a student's knowledge,

competence, and ability to apply learned knowledge.

The relationship of teaching methods in academic performance of the

students rely on how the students can learn on the lesson of their particular

curriculum. As it stated (Adunola, 2011) ‘the majority of students' poor academic

performance in various subject areas can be primarily attributed to the

implementation of teaching methods by teachers.’ It explains that if the teaching

methods of a teacher is unproductive then this will result in the poor academic

performance of the students and their grades can be damaged, because the

learners find it difficult to keep up in the lessons. By improving the teachers’

method, the students’ academic performance will significantly improve. That

shows the relationship of the teaching methods in academic performance of the

students.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of teaching

methods on student academic performance. By examining this topic, we can gain

a deeper understanding of teachers' teaching methods with their students. The

results of this study will determine the relationship of teaching methods and

academic performance.

Background of the study

Every student has a varied learning style. According to Ayeni (2011)

teaching is a continuous process that involves bringing about desirable changes

in learners through use of appropriate methods. The effectiveness of teaching

methods indicates that the quality of teaching is often reflected by the

achievement. Academic performance is influenced not only by students' but also

by educators' teaching methods.

A teacher is an important figure in the teaching and learning process

because he/she follows the curriculum. Adunola (2011) Poor academic

performance by the majority of the students in various subject areas is basically

linked to the application of ineffective teaching methods by teachers to learners.

Moreover, Asikhia (2010) found that qualifications of teachers and students’

but teachers’ methods of teaching influence poor performance.

Thus, the researchers aim to find and determine the relationship of

teaching methods on students’ academic performance. In order to determine

whether the teaching methods correlate on the academic performance of the

STEM students of Sacred Heart Academy Sta. Maria Bulacan (Inc.)

Theoretical Framework

Experiential Learning Theory

This study aims to investigate the relationship between teaching methods

and academic performance among Grade 11 STEM students at Sacred Heart

Academy of Sta. Maria (Bulacan), Inc. The research is grounded in David Kolb’s

experiential learning theory, which highlights the significance of hands-on

experience in the learning process. This teaching approach is considered one of

the best practices for science education, particularly in inclusive classrooms. The

experiential learning theory encourages active engagement with the subject

matter, fostering a deeper understanding and the development of practical skills.

According to the study by Parane, F.E. (2023), there is no significant

relationship between the extent to which teachers used different methods in

teaching exceptional learners and their academic performance. However, this

theory can help researchers improve learning outcomes for students, assist

Conceptual Framework

Teaching method is treated as an independent variable. They believe that

by adopting the most effective teaching methods for each student in their

particular learning style, their academic performance will improve. This will

enhance our students' grades and it will be beneficial to the students. If we fully

comprehend the teacher's method of instruction, it will be simpler for the

students’ to grasp the information when they are aware of how to learn best.

Academic performance as the dependent variable. The past research

conducted said that the students' academic performance varies on the different

types of teaching methods. Discussion, demonstration, lecture, problem solving,

etc. are some.of the examples. Learning methods should be used according to

the teacher, and the learners objectives.

such interactions should be

taken into consideration to help individuals to optimize their learning. Teachers

should choose the learning technique which most matches what they want to

achieve. Based on the researchers, for them to accomplish their goals of

encouraging greater effectiveness and quick learning, successful education

demands innovation.

Additionally, Gage (1958) there is an increase in the number of teachers

who improve and have teaching effectiveness. What this study wants to convey

is the effectiveness of tutoring and how it results in the academic performances

of the students. Moreover, They can also use other people's shares for their self-

primarily attributed to the implementation of ineffective teaching methods by

teachers. Isa G., Mammam A., Badar Y. & Bala T. (2020) added that discussions

In conclusion, Today, student performance is a big topic in education. The

methods used by teachers may have a good effect, but it also has a negative

effect on the academic performances of grade 11 STEM Students. Teachers

must consider the personal variations among their students in order to

appropriately meet the educational expectations of the learners. In today's era,

teachers must understand or be aware of the students' knowledge needs so that

the students can support and employ the skills they should study more.

Research Instrument

The primary research tools utilized in this study are modified

questionnaires and surveys. These instruments aim to identify the factors

correlating the academic performance of students and the extent of these

influences. The respondents are expected to carefully consider each question,

providing responses that accurately reflect their experiences.

The questionnaire is divided into three sections, each requiring a response

on a scale of ‘strongly agree’, ‘agree’, ‘don't know’, ‘disagree’, or ‘strongly

disagree’. The findings of this study will largely depend on the honesty and

accuracy of the respondents’ answers.

The Grade Weighted Average (GWA) of the respondents will serve as a

measure of academic performance. This data will be obtained from official school

records to ensure accuracy and reliability.

22

SACRED HEART ACADEMY OF STA. MARIA (BULACAN), INC.

The instruments are designed to collect data from students regarding their

perceptions of teaching methods, preferences, and academic performance.

Here’s a revised structure for your questionnaire:

Part 1 Personal Profile: This section collects demographic information

about the respondents, including their grade level, gender, age, and name.

Part 2 Teaching Methods: This section aims to understand the students’

experiences with different teaching methods. Questions could include how often

certain teaching methods are used and how effective students find them.

Part 3 Academic Performance: This section collects information about the

students’ academic performance. It could include questions about their Grade

Weighted Average (GWA), study habits, participation in class, and other factors

that could influence academic performance.

Part 4 Teaching Method Preferences: This new section could be added to

understand which teaching methods students prefer and why. This could provide

valuable insights into how teaching methods could be adjusted to improve

academic performance.

Data Gathering Procedure

The data gathering procedure for this research involves a systematic

approach to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the data collected. The

researcher personally distributes the questionnaires to ensure a 100% retrieval

rate. The distribution of questionnaires takes place between 9:00 am and 3:00

pm. Before the students begin answering the questionnaires, the researcher

explains the objectives of the research and provides clear instructions on how to

complete the survey. This step is crucial to ensure that the students understand

each question and provide accurate responses.

Once the students have completed the survey, the questionnaires are

immediately retrieved by the researcher. This immediate retrieval ensures that all

forms are accounted for and reduces the risk of data loss. In addition to the

survey data, the researchers also collect academic performance data in the form

of Grade Weighted Average (GWA) for the Grade 11 STEM students’ batch of

2023-2024. Permission is sought to acquire this data, ensuring that ethical

guidelines are followed.

To enhance this procedure, it may be beneficial to conduct follow-up interviews

with a select group of students. These interviews could provide deeper insights
