5th Grade Math Lesson: Geometry (3-D shapes) Can be used for spiral review

Key Learning: Geometric figures and relationships can be represented numerically, graphically, and
with models.
Unit Essential Question: Why are geometric figures important and how can they be described and
classified?
Standards: M4.C.1.1.2 2.9.5.J
Lesson Essential Question: How can three-dimensional figures be described using faces, edges, and
vertices? (ET)

Vocabulary: Cube, sphere, rectangular prism, pyramid, edges, faces, vertex, vertices, 3-dimensional,
solid figure

Materials: 3-D shapes (rec. prism, tri. Prism, rec. pyramid, square pyramid, sphere, cylinder,
cone), paper, pencil
Procedures:
1. Warm Up: Name the figure. How many corners and sides do each one have?
1. 2. 3. 4.

2.Think-Pair-Share What is a face? What is an edge? What is a vertex?

In flat-surfaced solid figures, each flat surface is a face.
An edge is a line segment where 2 faces meet.
A vertex is where 3 or more edges meet. (plural: vertices)

3. Teach/Model 2-D and 3-D shapes:

A square is a flat shape, or It has just two dimensions, length and width. Six squares can be combined to make a cube,
which is a It has three dimensions, length, width, and height.
3-D Shapes: List and show each solid figure. Solid figures are also called solids or space figures.
Here are some other solids that have all flat surfaces. Which solid has no flat surfaces? Which
solids have both flat and curved surfaces?

Rectangular Prism, Triangular Prism, Cube, Square Pyramid, Sphere, Cylinder, Cone

4. Activity: Identify edges, faces, and vertices.

Number each solid figure #1 - #7.
Identify each numbered solid and then list how many edges, faces, and vertices, it has.
This is a great team or partner activity.
