Motivation LETTER-Master of Development Studies-Khairun Nisa
“Development is among the most important long-term multilateral agendas existing today. As we all
know, lasting peace cannot be achieved unless large population groups find ways in which to break
out of poverty (Pal Schmitt-former President of Hungary)”. Poverty and Development have
coorelation each other. When Development made break out of poverty. But first of all, let introduce
myself. I am Khairun Nisa and graduated in September 2013 from International Relations
Department of Social and Political Sciences Faculty at Hasanuddin University, Indonesia, as my
bachelor degree.
Since I started my Bachelor Degree in International Relations in 2009, I am sure enough about the
career path I wanted to pursue. Be a Woman Diplomat or working in International Organizations are
my career’s dream. My country, Indonesia, as a developing country has many problems regarding its
development and poverty. In March 2016, the number of people in poverty in Indonesia reached
28.01 million (or 10.86% of total Indonesian citizen). This number reflected Indonesia needs
development strategy to decrease the povery of its people. Development Studies in this case, has
direct corelation and important role to develop analysis and framework regarding to create
comperhent strategy of development. Development is meaning for all of people. But in reality,
development today can only be perceived by a few people. Based on those thought, I decided to
continue my study and to apply for a Master in Development Studies of ISS Erasmus University
Rotterdam; not just for the academic title but because of my desire for understanding in depth and
focus more on the subject.
As the profile of the Master’s degree in Development Studies at the ISS Erasmus University
Rotterdam is highly international and multidisciplinary, I believe that your program is a perfect
addition to the knowledge I have already obtained. I consider it to be a most valuable experience to
get the opportunity to meet students from all over the world and learn about their cultures and
(corresponding) norms and values. Furthermore, courses like Theories and Issues in Development and
Historical Aspect of Development would give me more insight in understanding of what the really
meaning of development. Considering the profile as well as the content of the Master’s degree in
Development Studies at ISS, along with the knowledge I will take with me from my previous studies,
I am confident that this Master brings me one step closer to reach my goal of becoming a Diplomat of
Indonesia and development advisor.
During my college years I was part of the International Relations Student Organization, which is
aimed to create awareness of the different problems in the world by arranging discussion between
stakeholders and students in order to vary the opinions. In fact, together with other students from
different departments in our university, we met periodically to discuss about current affairs and a
variety of issues affecting different cultures. I have learned a lot from this experience: being part of
the group taught me how important was to listen as well as to be argumentative. Furthermore, I had
the possibility of organizing and overviewing special events at the end of the academic year. From
creating and organizing events, managing the budget to public relations, from the organization of the
event itself to the advertising process, I gained precious knowledge, experiences, and improved
different skills, such as problem-solving and bulid relations.
I consider myself to be a person who pays attention to details but is still able to look at the overall
picture. Moreover, I am quite diligent and I work hard in order to achieve my goals. I am a good
team-player. In five years’ vision I see myself working for Foreign Ministry in Indonesia that deals in
an international environment. One of my desires would be to help Indonesia by increasing relations
with other countries.
Yours sincerely.
