EDSE 131 TEST 2
20 OCTOBER 2022

Module Title: ELECTRONICS AND ELECTRICITY (EDSE131)

Assessment: Individual
Duration: 12:10 PM – 13:45 PM
Marks: 80 marks
Internal Examiner: Mr N Sibanda
ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS

Section A [25 Marks] - Magnetism

1) Electric motors and generators are one and the same thing. YES or NO. Explain. (5 marks)

2) How do Electromagnets differ from bar magnets? (3 Marks)

3) How you would you determine if a metal/Object is a permanent magnet? Outline your method with
sketches. (5 marks)

4) How would you explain to Technology learners in Grades 7 – 9 that you can create a current through
a wire without connecting the wire directly to a voltage source like a battery?? What
investigation/activity would you engage them in and why? (12 marks)

Section B [30 Marks] - Digital electronics

1. Convert the number 51 into base 2. (5 Marks)

2. Technology subject specialist has discovered that teachers are refraining from teaching LOGIC
gates in grade 8 and 9 Technology. You are requested to facilitate a workshop that will introduce
Logic gates with TWO inputs. You need to focus on a LOGIC with series combinations (i.e.,
OR and AND gates). Clearly show how you would determine the number of combinations, the
symbol of the LOGIC gate and the output of the series combination with TWO inputs.

(25 Marks)

Section C [25 Marks] – Hydraulics systems

1. Cleary state Pascal’s Law/Principle. (2 Marks)

2. A piston has a radius of 20mm and the pressure in the cylinder is 4N𝑚−2. Calculate the force
output from the cylinder. (5 Marks)

3. The Pistons of a hydraulic jack have radii of 5cm and 30cm.

i. Represent this system diagrammatically. (2 Marks)

ii. What force must be applied to the smaller piston to exert a force of 5000N on the larger
piston? (4 Marks)

iii. What is the pressure on the larger piston? (2 Marks)

iv. What is the pressure on the smaller piston? (2 Marks)

v. What is the Ideal mechanical advantage of this hydraulic jack? (2 Marks)

4. The diagram below (Figure 1), shows a hydraulic braking system used on a motor car.

i. Identify two subsystems in the hydraulic braking system shown in Figure 1. (2 Marks)
ii. Explain how these two subsystems work together in a hydraulic brake system. (4 Marks)
