POLICY
Different types of healthcare wastes can be generated from different department of the hospital
including the ambulance. Proper waste disposal will influence safety and help minimize the exposure
to hazards that may cause infection to healthcare workers.

These guidelines are intended to provide information regarding the proper disposal of wastes from the
ambulance:

A. All medical wastes shall be packaged, contained and located in a manner that prevents and
protects the waste from release at the ambulance or at any time before ultimate disposal.

B. The categories of medical waste shall be separated from point of origin into appropriate,
properly labeled containers (ampules/vials, plunger, sharps, Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE), oxygen cannula/mask, endotracheal tubes and other aerosol generating equipment).

1. All sharps are placed in rigid, puncture-resistant containers that are appropriately
labeled. The filled containers are decontaminated prior to disposal.
2. All ampules/vials are placed in rigid containers that are appropriately labeled.
3. All plungers are placed in rigid, puncture-resistant containers that are appropriately
labeled.
4. All PPE, oxygen cannula/mask, endotracheal tubes and other aerosol generating
equipment wastes are placed in appropriate plastic bags and should be
decontaminated before disposal.

C. Medical wastes shall not be mixed with other waste materials before decontamination and
disposal. After decontamination, wastes shall be mixed with other solid waste and disposed.
1. Disposable gloves and facemask are worn by personnel when handling medical
waste.
2. Medical wastes are placed in plastic bags that are labeled with a “Medical Waste”
symbol or with the words "medical waste". The bags are closed and tied shut, and
double bagged when there is a possibility of leakage due to the nature of the medical
wastes.
3. Pathological waste such as tissues, linens etc. that contains bodily fluids from the
patient should be put in a separate bin with yellow-colored plastic container and shall
be disposed according to the current Municipal collection system

D. Medical wastes shall not be stored outdoors or in any unsecured area but shall be stored in a
secured area to prevent access to the waste by unauthorized individuals who are not
responsible for disposal.

E. No medical waste will be disposed of by landfilling.

F. Management responsibility.
1. The OPD Head Nurse, handling Ambulance services shall designate an individual to
oversee the handling of medical waste and assure compliance with this management
plan.

2. Staff/s who handled medical and pathological wastes and/or punctured with
infectious wastes shall report to Infection Control Officer for assessment and due
interventions.
3. The Nurse assigned shall check the ambulance waste bin at least once per week to
make sure that no pathological waste are left inside the vehicle
