Reading 3 - In your gap year
Simon Prince graduated from Wyandotte University. He is now a professional artist for an educational
materials company. Simon tells us about his gap year:

During my gap year, I worked in menial jobs in inner city San Francisco. After years of living in a
privileged situation, I thought it was time to see and live the problems of others. I didn’t know if I
could make a sudden change, so I started with something easy and then did worse work.

For the first few months I worked in a fast-food restaurant. It was horrible. The kitchen was hot and
there was a constant smell of fried food in the air. There was constant pressure to do everything faster.
The customers were unpleasant. And we always had to worry about people who didn’t pay. I learned
to be patient and more alert.

Then I got a job as a street cleaner. I had a uniform that was always filthy because the streets were a
disaster. They were full of papers and leaves, and also rotten food, urine, vomit and sometimes even
excrement. Once I picked up a bag of smelly fish to throw it away and a drunk screamed that it was
his lunch! Now I’m stronger from carrying heavy bags.

At the end of the year, I had almost no money because the salary was very low. I had talked to hundreds
of people with serious health, family and economic problems. When I applied for work, I could explain
how to connect to the poor and homeless people, and not only direct my art to the rich and comfortable.
It was a unique point of view and got me several job offers. It was a very difficult year, but I’m very
glad I did it.

1. Was the gap year a good idea for Simon?

2. Where did he work?
3. What jobs does he describe?
4. What did he dislike about his gap year?
5. What were the benefits of the gap year?

Reading 4: A Disastrous Dinner
Read the story and answer the following questions.
Last week Paola planned to have a delicious dinner for some friends. She bought
a salmon and some pumpkin and spices for a pumpkin pie. When she came home
from the shops, she put her shopping on the table. While she was setting the table,
her two cats sat under it and watched her. Then she went to the kitchen to make
the pie. She forgot that the salmon, pumpkin and spices were still on the table.

While she was making the pie, one cat jumped on a chair and looked longingly at
the fish. Then it took the salmon in its mouth and jumped off the chair, just as
Paola was returning to the dining room. She screamed, and the cat ran behind a
sofa with the fish. While she was chasing one cat, the other cat jumped on the
table and knocked over the spices. Paola couldn’t catch the cat, but she picked up the fish. It was
beyond hope and she threw it into the garbage. In the kitchen she saw the cat playing with the spice
boxes. She reached for the broom to sweep up the spices but she slipped and fell on the floor. She
couldn’t get up and couldn’t reach her phone.

Her three friends arrived. The house smelled wonderful because of the spices, but no food was prepared
and Paola was on the floor. They took her to the hospital, where she had a supper of hospital food. It
was not very good!

Unit 2 - The World We Live In

Reading 1 - Stress

Part 1

Hi, my name’s Pat. My life is hectic. Yesterday I was busy all day. I woke up at 6 a.m. so I
could shower and have breakfast before I called my children at 7 a.m. I prepared their breakfast and
snacks while they showered and got dressed. They ate and I had to check my email, because my boss
insists that we arrive at work ready for the clients. By 8:15 the children were in school and I was
arriving at work after a horrible traffic jam.

I thought I was prepared for my first client, but the family wanted to go to the United States
and health regulations prohibited it. Suddenly we had to look for a new destination, knowing that the
holiday began in six days. The client was calling family members to confirm possibilities and I was
investigating flights, hotels and free time activities in each place. I often had worked out all the details
when one of the nieces or nephews vetoed the option. Finally they all agreed on a week in Ibiza and I
told them that before the end of the business day I would have the package ready.

I was starting to work on the package when I saw that I had three urgent calls waiting: one was
from a client who wanted an upgrade from business class to first class on all flights, another was from
a supervisor who wanted a report on my activities last week and the third was from my son’s teacher.
He had a fever and had to go home. Quickly I told my boss about the situation and took my files so
that I could work from home.

Part 2

I picked up my son, took him home and put him to bed. I tried to work on the package to Ibiza,
but every time I made some progress, my son called to ask for water, food, or maybe a hug. He finally
fell asleep and I sat down to do some work when I looked at the time. I had to pick up my daughter
and make lunch. After lunch I asked my daughter to watch my son and I went to do some work.

That lasted for an hour or so, until my daughter had to go to music class. I asked the neighbor
to watch my son and took my computer to finish the package while my daughter practiced. We
returned home and I finished the package and sent it to my client. I called the airlines about the
upgrades. I prepared supper and made an extra portion for the neighbor in thanks for watching my son.
We ate supper and then I had to help my children with their homework. They went to watch TV. I
wanted to start on the report, but I saw the kitchen full of dirty dishes. I washed the dishes and took
my children to bed.

Now was the moment to start the report, but my father called to explain his health problems.
He asked me to take him to the hospital on Wednesday. He repeated everything about five times and
I was nervous because it was getting late and I had to do the report. Finally I told him to go to sleep
because my son was calling. My son woke up with a nightmare and a fever. By 2 a.m. he was calm
and sleeping again. I had four hours before I had to wake up and write a report. What would you do?

Reading 2 - My Dog Spot

I’m Bobby. My dog Spot is the best dog in the neighborhood. It isn’t the biggest dog. Astro and
Sparky are bigger than Spot. Maybe Spot is growing and will be the biggest in the future, but now it’s
not as big as some other dogs. Then why is Spot the best?
Some think that Spot is the fastest dog in the neighborhood, but last week in the park I saw that Pancho
and Star ran faster than Spot. Spot is very fast; Spot is faster than Joe and Scrappy and Loopy, but
Spot is definitely not the fastest dog in the neighborhood. Then why is Spot the best?
Dogs can be short haired or long haired. Long haired dogs that don’t have their hair carefully cut are
called shaggy dogs. Spot is a very shaggy dog. It’s shaggier than any of the dogs on my street.
Yesterday I saw a dog on the next street that was as shaggy as Spot. Possibly it was shaggier than
Spot. If Spot isn’t the shaggiest dog in the neighborhood, then why is Spot the best?
Spot can do tricks. It can sit, fetch, roll over and catch mice. Spot’s a very intelligent dog. My friend
Kim says that Astro is smarter than Spot. Astro can walk on a narrow stick and if you ask it to add
two and two, it barks four times! It also recognizes Kim from a hundred meters away. There is no
question about it. Astro is more intelligent than Spot. Then why is Spot the best?
Dogs can be friendly. Spot plays with everyone. It plays with other dogs and with children. Children
can pet Spot and it never gets angry. One day a boy pulled Spot’s tail, and it only barked a little. It
didn’t attack the boy. I thought that Spot was the friendliest dog in the neighborhood until I saw how
Pancho plays with groups of children. Pancho is friendlier than Spot. Or at least as friendly. Then
why is Spot the best?
Spot is my dog. Spot makes me happier than any dog in the neighborhood, than any dog in the world.
For me, Spot is the best! Spot’s my favorite!

Reading 3: Modern Technology
Mobile computers

The first mobile computers were heavy and ran from mains power.
The 50lb IBM 5100 was an early example. Later portables such as
the Osborne 1 and Compaq Portable were considerably lighter but
still needed to be plugged in. The first laptops, such as the Grid
Compass, removed this requirement by incorporating batteries – and
with the continued miniaturization of computing resources and
advancements in portable battery life, portable computers grew in
popularity in the 2000s. The same developments allowed
manufacturers to integrate computing resources into cellular mobile
phones by the early 2000s.
https://www.publicdomainpictures.net/es/view-image.php?image=910&picture=laptop

These smartphones and tablets run on a variety of operating systems and recently became the dominant
computing device on the market. These are powered by System on a Chip (SoCs), which are complete
computers on a microchip the size of a coin. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer

2. What change occurred when laptops were introduced?
3. When did cell phones start to use computer capabilities?
4. How big is the microchip in a smartphone?

GPS

The Global Positioning System (GPS), originally Navstar GPS, is a satellite-based radionavigation
system owned by the United States government and operated by the United States Space Force. It is
one of the global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) that provides geolocation and time information
to a GPS receiver anywhere on or near the Earth where there is an unobstructed line of sight to four or
more GPS satellites. Obstacles such as mountains and buildings block the relatively weak GPS signals.

The GPS does not require the user to transmit any data, and it operates independently of any
telephonic or internet reception, though these technologies can enhance the usefulness of the GPS
positioning information. The GPS provides critical positioning capabilities to military, civil, and
commercial users around the world. The United States government created the system, maintains it,
and makes it freely accessible to anyone with a GPS receiver.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Positioning_System

1. How many satellites are needed for GPS?

2. Does GPS work without internet?
3. What are restrictions of access to GPS?
4. Is GPS available everywhere on earth? Explain

Reading 4 - World Records: Ashrita Furman
Ashrita Furman has many Guiness records. He often invents a new activity, does the activity, and has
another Guiness record. Here are a few examples. He added wheels and brakes to a rowing machine and rowed
1,500 miles (2,400 km) in 16 days in 1991. Furman also invented the sport of gluggling, underwater juggling,
which he did for 48 minutes in Auckland, New Zealand in 2002 and distance sack racing, which Furman did
for a mile while racing against a yak in Mongolia in 2007.
On January 30, 2008, Furman unveiled his giant pencil – 76 feet (23 m) long, 22,000 pounds (with
4,000 solid pounds of Pennsylvania graphite). The pencil was built in three weeks as a birthday gift for teacher
Sri Chinmoy on 27 August 2007. It was transported from Queens, New York, to the City Museum in St. Louis.
In April 2009 Furman became the first person to hold 100 Guinness World Records at once.

Reading 5 - Green and Blue Economy
Green Economy
A green economy is one that improves human well-being and creates social
equity while reducing environmental risks and scarcities.

A green economy is an alternative to today's economic model, which

foments inequalities, encourages waste, causes scarcities, and generates
threats to the environment and human health. Over the past decade, the
concept of the green economy has emerged as a strategic priority for many
governments.

Many organizations work to institute the green economy as the dominant

model.

Blue economy
The Blue Economy concept works for economic growth, social inclusion, and
the preservation or improvement of lives while ensuring environmental
sustainability of the oceans and coastal areas.

It considers the oceans as a resource to be used sustainably. It works to stop

the degradation of the water ecosystems. An important challenge of the Blue
Economy is the collaboration of nations and public-private sectors, at global
scale for the sustainable management of ocean resources.

Reading 6 - Present Perfect
I think I have had a good year so far. I entered CEPA Pitiüses two years ago. I left school when
I was sixteen because I preferred sitting in the park with my friends to going to school. My grades
were very bad and the teachers didn’t like me. A few years ago, I decided to get my ESO degree.

The first year was very difficult. The English teacher only spoke in English. I haven’t had such
a difficult class since then. My math teacher made me think. My Catalan teachers have always insisted
that I speak only Catalan in class, and I’ve worked hard to improve. Before I didn’t like those languages
but now, I love them.

I've met a lot of interesting people. Some of my best friends are people that I saw for the first
time in the adult school. We talked the first day, we exchanged telephone numbers and ever since
we’ve sent messages every day. We often go out in the evening together, and I’ve even attended a
wedding of two classmates who met at the adult school and got married the next year.

And now I’m in my last year. I’ve had good teachers and bad teachers. I’ve received good
scores and bad scores. But this year should be the best. I have a good base thanks to my teachers from
last year. My friends and classmates are supporting me. My boss has adjusted my hours so I can go
to class every day. I considered requesting a reduction in hours, but we need the money.

So far, I have an average of 85% in my classes. I’m certain that I can maintain this level and
graduate with a very good grade. Then there is one big question. Graduation is in June. What do I do
next?

Fill in the missing words. Think if the question is past simple or present perfect.
1. When _______ enter the school?

Unit 4 - Future

Reading 1 - Climate crisis

The climate crisis is accelerating at an unprecedented rate, and we are not ready for it. Here are some
of the biggest environmental problems of our lifetime and the future.

1. Poor Governance

In a world governed by economics, our society has failed to factor in the value of Nature. It
provides resources, but we do not control how much we take from it. In many cases, damaging the
environment is considered a side-effect of business. In the future we will have to think about the
environment in everything we do or the results will be catastrophic.

2. Food Waste

In 2013 around ⅓ of the world’s food was wasted every year. The amount of food lost is
equivalent to roughly 1.3 billion tons, which is enough to feed 3 billion people. There are 690 million
people suffering from malnutrition; it is clear we have more than enough for everyone to eat. We will
have to improve our system for producing and distributing food or many people will starve needlessly.

31 | P a g e
3. Biodiversity Loss

Biodiversity suffers wherever Homo sapiens goes. The 2020 Living Planet Report (LPR), published
by the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF), found that in general populations have declined by an
average 68% since 1975. Will our children see an elephant? Will the food chain break down?

4. Plastic Pollution

Of the 270 million tons of plastic produced each year, a small portion (that is, 8 million tons)
ends up in the ocean. It will sink to the bottom, or decompose into smaller pieces called microplastics
at the surface. Microplastics act like sponges; they trap many of the chemicals we carelessly put into
our oceans. Then they are eaten by marine life. In the end, these poisons will reach us through the food
chain.

5. Deforestation

According to The World Counts, we are losing fourteen thousand square meters of forest every
minute to housing, industry and, most importantly, crops or grazing land. The forests can trap carbon
dioxide. The primary forests have remained untouched for millenia and they are home to some of the
most ecologically rich and diverse ecosystems in the world. New forests will not build up such
biodiversity without centuries of growing. They will not be able to store carbon as well as the primary
forests.

Answer the questions below.

1. What will happen if we don’t consider nature in our planning?

2. Is there sufficient food for the people in the world?
3. Why is the loss of biodiversity important?
4. How will we eat microplastics?
5. Why are new forests worse than primary forests?
6. What is the climate crisis?
7. What can we do, as individuals, to combat climate change?
8. What do you think Ibiza will be like in fifty years?

Reading 2 - What Can We Do About the Climate Crisis?

You can do a lot! It’s simple to make a difference to keep the Earth healthy. Try some of these tips to
reduce the amount of carbon dioxide you add to the atmosphere:

➢ Instead of traveling in a car, use public transportation, walk, or ride your bike when you can.
Biking or walking 10 miles each day instead of riding in a car can save up to 1.9 tons of carbon dioxide
from entering the atmosphere every year.
➢ Reduce and reuse things as much as possible. Factories emit lots of carbon dioxide when
making new products. (Buying products that are made with recycled glass and plastic also emits carbon
dioxide, though less so.) Fix your appliances and clothes instead of buying new products. Good thing
holey jeans are back in style!
➢ Wash your clothes in cold water, and hang them out to dry.

32 | P a g e
➢ Electronics use energy even when they’re turned off, so unplug them when you’re not using
them. It could save your family about $200 a year on its energy bill.
➢ Eat less meat and dairy. Farm animals emit a heat-trapping gas, methane. And some studies
have found that livestock account for about half of the world’s heat-trapping gas emissions.
➢ Buy locally grown and in-season foods and products to reduce emissions from transporting
products.
➢ Wear a warm sweater at home in the winter instead of turning up the heat, and open your
windows instead of blasting the air conditioning in the summer.
➢ Talk to others about climate change. Send a letter or drawing to your mayor, political
representative, or even to the president. These leaders can vote to regulate and reduce carbon dioxide
emissions.

Reading 3 - Next Year

Hi, I’m Pat. This year I’m finishing ESPA. It’s not easy, but I’m doing it.
What am I going to do next year? I’ve always wanted to be a film director.
I’m not sure if I’m ready to study at university level. I think I’m going to try
to find an FP program with film. I don’t want to start at an intermediate level,
because that would be a long time. Next year I’m going to prepare for the
access examination. I’m going to prepare for access to the university, because
at the adult school they have teachers who prepare you. If you pass you can
go to university or FP.
https://www.idealista.com/venta-viviendas/balears-illes/mallorca/mapa
Next year I’m going to take a trip with my partner. This year is impossible because when I have
vacation from school, my partner is working. Next year we’ll go to Mallorca for two weeks. We’re
going to hike and swim and relax. After this year of work and school, we need a holiday! I’ve always
wanted to visit Mallorca and next year will be the year.
Finally, next year I will stop eating junk food. When I’m nervous I eat a lot
of chocolate and potato chips and other junk food. I’m going to talk to a
specialist about the problem. Together we’re going to create a program to
reduce anxiety and find other solutions besides junk food. My wallet and
my waist will be happy.
Next year will be a good year.

Film Review

Movies can be divided into several different genres. There are exciting action movies with gun fights
and car chases, and horror movies that make us jump in our seats. There are comedies that make us
laugh, and dramas that make us cry. Sci-fi movies show us what the future might be like, historical
films tell us stories from the past, and documentaries show us real people and events.
After watching a movie, you might want to ask questions like:

"Which character did you like the best?"

"What did you think of the plot?"
"Did you like the cast?"
"What was your favorite scene?"

Write a review of your favorite film.
