b. ? When I started, I worked as a sales rep for two years and learned
a lot during that time and went to a lot of training courses. After two years, I was promoted and
became an area manager with a small team of two other people. I did that for three years, before
moving to the job I do now. I currently manage a different area with a larger team of five people
and since I have been there, our sales have increased by 25%.
c. ? I have been with this company for six years now and I would like
to have experience with a new company and I’m looking for a new challenge. Also, I have a new
manager who started a couple of months ago and I don’t really get along with him. He’s pretty
stupid.
d. ? I’m a hard worker and enjoy learning new skills. I really love
working in sales and don’t have a problem with working as long as I need to reach my goals. I’m
good working as part of a team, but I’m happy to work by myself too.
e. ? Selling ice cream on a beach! Sun, ice cream and sales: my three
favorite things.
g. ? First, I decide what are the most important tasks to deal with and
I do those first. If I’ve got a lot to do, I will get up extra early and get a head start.

Key
1. Warm up
5 mins.

after students have discussed it to talk about shared difficulties and how to overcome them.
2. Focus on vocabulary
15 mins.
Part A
This looks at relevant vocabulary and how word stress can change with different forms. Students will use the
vocabulary in context. Ask them to complete Part A unaided in the first instance, but allow them to use a dictionary
if needed later.
Note: You may want to elicit or explain the meaning of Public Relations which is the way in which different
organizations interact with the general public and the view that is held of them.

4. Ordering questions
10 mins.
This asks students to think about the grammar of question formation before asking them to use them with the
interview. Later students will have a chance to answer these questions themselves.
1. How do you deal with a large amount of work? 2. Why are you looking for work?
3. What is your dream job? 4. Why do you want to do this job?
5. What are your hobbies? 6. How would you describe yourself?
7. What are your strengths? 8. What experience do you have?
Answers to the job interview:
5. Finding vocabulary
5 mins.
This uses the interview to highlight more useful vocabulary. Ensure students can correctly pronounce target
vocabulary.
6. Talking point
15 mins.
Ask students to discuss the quality of the answers to begin with and say if they are good answers and if not, why
not. Then ask students to do a mock interview in pairs or threes. Circulate and help as needed.
a. A good answer. It connects the persons experience to the reputation of the company and puts both in a positive
light.
b. A good answer. It is short, but quickly gives a lot of information about what the person has done and gives a
quick example of what they have achieved.
c. The first part of the answer is good. But it is a bad idea to say negative things about people you are working
with. It’s not professional and can make you look bad, even if what you are saying is true.
d. A good answer. It covers the strengths of working with others and alone, both of which are likely.
e. Not a good answer. It doesn’t sound very professional even if it is a nice dream. It doesn’t sound very ambitious
either.
f. This is a good answer as it focuses on something which would be important to the company.
g. A good answer because it shows self-awareness and the ability to self-manage.

h. A good answer as it shows the person is active, is still actively learning something (which could be good for the
company as it requires communication) and it shows the person has a social life which is a good sign.
7. Extended activity/Homework
20 mins+.
This gives students a chance to use some of what they have been doing in the lesson to write a mock cover letter.
Even if they are not planning to apply for a job, this is a good exercise. Be sure to give them feedback on their
work.
