Banuag Project2

This document contains responses to 6 questions about concepts related to the development of self-image and the influence of culture. The responses discuss George Herbert Mead's concepts of the "I" and "me" and how a complete fusion may not be ideal. They also address how we are influenced by our perceptions of others' views rather than the views themselves. The responses provide examples of ethnocentric and xenocentric behaviors and discuss how culture differentiates people while humanity remains fundamentally similar.

LONG TERM PROJECT 2

Instruction. Answer the following questions as concise as possible.

1. In everyday life, a complete fusion on the “I” and “me” of Mead may not be a good
thing. Do you agree?
• Yes, I agree that a complete fusion on the “I” and “me” of Mead may not be a
good thing in everyday life. The “I” of mead represents the subjective and
independent perspective of the self. The “me” of mead is the social perspective
of the self based on the expectations and judgements of others while both are
necessary for a complete understanding of the self and the social environment, it
is critical to distinguish between them. If the two merge completely, it could result
in a loss of identity, a lack of self-awareness and inability to interact effectively
with others. Mead explored what he called the fusion of the I and the ME in the
attitudes of religion, patriotism, and team work. He also considered that gives a
very adequate explanation of this exaltation. In everyday life, a complete fuison
of the I and ME may not be a good thing because it is a dynamic sort of balance.

2. We are not influenced by other peole’s opinions per se. We are influenced by our
own imaginations or perceptions or opinions onj how others see us. This means that we
are actively engaged in defining our self-image or self-concept using our past
experiences to aid us interpreting other people’s responses. How can help other people
develop positive self-image?
• I can help other people to develop their positive self-image by saying to them that
instead of focusing to other people’s life they need to focus on their selves. If you
always focus to other people you always think that they are better than you or
you will always compare yourself to them. So if you want to stop that one, you
need to be positive, you need to surround yourself with the active and to those
who value of you are, stop being a perfectionist & accept that nothing in life is
perfect, control your thoughts please think before you talk. If you will follow this
one, you already have a healthy self-image, you will have a high opinion of
yourself. Self-image will impact your confidence and the ease with which you
create what you want, your self-image is with you all the time, therefore it is
valuable to have ways to improve it.

3. Based on the looking-glass self-theory, it is not others per set that determine our self-
concept, but it is how we perceive how others see us that influence
• All of us need to be true to ourself, it doesn’t really matter how the other person
sees you because they only view basically a reflection of their own opinion. We
can improve our self-perception by avoiding rigid schemata, thinking critically
about socializing institutions, intervening in self-fulfilling and becoming aware of
thought cycles that disort our self-perception.

4. From youtube, watch “Three Letters from Teddy”. Did Ms. Thompson, in a way
contribute to Teddy’s positive development? Explain why and how in the context of
Mead’s and Cooley’s thoughts on self-concept development.
• Ms. Thompson contribute to Teddy’s positive development because she give
attention to Teddy to help him to get back to he’s own feet, Ms. Thompson had a
huge impact to Teddy because without her Teddy might be a hopeless kid.
According to the Cooley’s theory it is notable because it suggest that self-concept
is built not in solitude but rather within social settings.

5. Give concrete proofs ( atleast 2 each ) of ethnocentric and xenocentric behaviors.

• Ethnocentrism is an attitude characterized by the glorification of one’s own group
and the defamation and discrimination of other groups. For example;

▪ Judging other culture’s food and their cultural outfits.

▪ Expecting others to speak your language and criticising them if they can’t.

• Xenocentrism is a belief or preference to value other cultures as superior more

than one’s own, condradictory to ethnocentrism. For example;

▪ Colonial mentality of the filipinos, who believe that travelling overseas is the
path to elevate their lives out of puberty.
▪ Filipinos are prefer to buy imported items from other countries since they
believe those products are superior than their own.

6. Kung-fu-tsu once said; All men are pretty much alike; it is by culture that they are set
apart.

a. Do you agree? Why or why not?

• I agree. As humans, we are all much alike the way we were formed in our
mother’s womb, the way we have our metabolism and all but the characteristics
that made us distinct from each other is how we live and deal with our everyday
lives. We are just different through our beliefs, religions, races, cultures and the
language that we spoke but inside we are all human beings who knows how to
get hurt and feel the pain that other people do to us.
b. How does the statement of Kung-fu-tsu affect your attitude towards people from
various culture?
• The first I can begin to respect different forms of sprituality is to learn about
them. Even if I don’t agree with someone’s belief or practices I also need to
respect of their opinios, beliefs and etc. If I don’t respect their beliefs it may
upset the person from a different culture.
