    Key Findings
    • Open access solar installations totaled 419 MW in the first quarter (Q1) of 2021.

    • As of March 2021, the cumulative installed capacity in the open access market was 4.3 GW. The pipeline of projects under development and pre-
    construction phase is estimated to be approximately 1.1 GW.

    • In Q1 2021, Maharashtra was the top state for open access solar projects developed, accounting for 22% of the total installations during the quarter.

    • Karnataka was the largest market for open access cumulatively, followed by Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.

    • Gujarat is the only state allowing third-party sale, but only for wind-solar hybrid projects.

    • The procurement of power through short-term open access is witnessing an upward trend in recent years. Factors such as commitment to 100%
    renewable energy by large corporates and meeting RPOs is driving power procurement through short-term open access.

    • A total of 71,688 billion units were traded in the day-ahead mechanism in FY 2020-21 compared to 49,112 billion units in FY 2019-20, indicating an
    increment of 45%. In FY 2020-21, a total of 116,956 billion unit sell bids were received, increasing 35% compared to the preceding year.

    • In Q1 2021, 1,181.7 billion units of power were scheduled under term-ahead mechanism making up for 86% of all transactions. Day-ahead and intra-
    day transactions accounted for 13% and 1% respectively.

    • The average open access tariff in the states covered in this report ranged from ₹3.50-5.00 ($0.048- 0.068)/kWh with a yearly escalation of 1-2%
    depending on contract terms.
