Senior Director, Infrastructure and Production

On behalf of our client, the University of Minnesota, KeyStone Search has been retained in the recruitment of aSenior Director, Infrastructure and Production.

Position Profile September 2012 Page 2 OVERVIEW Founded in 1851, the University of Minnesota is one of the most comprehensive public universities in the world. It is both the states land-grant university and its flagship research institution. The Universitys mission is to inspire students, pursue breakthrough discoveries, and share knowledge with the state, country and world. With five campuses, approximately 69,000 students and 18,000 employees, the University of Minnesota has an economic impact of $8.6 billion on the Minnesota economy annually. The University of Minnesota system includes five campuses, as well as field stations and research and outreach centers. It is spread across over 27,000 acres, 863 buildings, and 29 million gross square feet of building area. The University of Minnesota named Eric W. Kaler its 16th president effective July 1, 2011. In his State of the University Address on March 1, President Kaler outlined a half dozen new initiatives that touch on each aspect of the Universitys mission teaching and learning, research, and outreach and engagement. One of President Kalers top priorities is operational excellence, which he describes as a long-term commitment to work smarter, reduce costs, enhance services, and generate new sources of revenue. To achieve operational excellence, the University continues to build an administrative backbone that is effective in supporting teaching, research, and public engagement and that creates culture change in the way we collaborate, identify and solve problems, and move forward together. R. Scott Studham joined the University of Minnesota as Vice President and Chief Information Officer in February 2012. Previously Scott was CIO at the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He also served as the Chief Technology Officer for the National Center for Computational Sciences which is host to the worlds fastest computer. Scott has a bachelors degree in chemistry, a masters degree in computer science and a masters degree in business administration. He has been the project manager or chief architect for a top 10 supercomputer six times during the course of his career, and is an internationally recognized researcher in the area of high performance computing. Scott has published in CIO Magazine, Scientific Computing, and multiple IEEE peer reviewed journals, and has been called upon by the U.S. Congress to provide testimony on information security on multiple occasions.

OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION The Senior Director, Infrastructure and Production reports directly to the Vice President and CIO, is a member of the IT Leadership Team and is responsible for providing strategic vision and leadership for the Infrastructure and Production area. The Universitys Office of Information Technology (OIT) mission is to serve as a catalyst for innovatively leveraging technology to advance and support extraordinary education, breakthrough research, and dynamic public engagement; the person in this position plays a key role in engaging staff in fulfilling this mission. The Senior Director provides critical direction for the strategic management of Operations, Infrastructure & Architecture and Networking & Telecommunications at the University while fostering strong relationships with collaborative partners across the University and with outside constituents. The OIT Infrastructure and Production team has an annual budget of approximately $30M and oversees 1800 servers, 1800 wireless access points, primary and recovery data centers and 150,000 jacks. Consisting of 125 full-time staff, the Infrastructure and Production team is one of four major functional areas in OIT, and currently has nine direct reports to the Senior Director of Production and Infrastructure.

Position Profile September 2012 Page 3 The ideal candidate will be a strong leader, customer-focused and committed to the highest standards of excellence, integrity, accountability, and stewardship, who possesses a reputation for working collaboratively with internal and external constituencies, and who has demonstrated an ability to inspire commitment, foster innovation, and deliver results. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Oversee Operations, Infrastructure & Architecture and Networking & Telecommunications activities providing strategic vision and leadership. Initiate and foster business partnerships across the University that increase efficiency and effectiveness; balance business partner needs with University and OIT priorities, business strategies, and objectives. Provide direction on developing and maintaining automated processes and procedures to complete service requests and provisioning. Collaborate with directors and senior managers to drive ITIL-based operational support models across enterprise applications and systems. Cultivate an environment encouraging continuous improvement identification and implementation opportunities. Ensure the highest levels of stability and performance for enterprise systems. Manage workflow and determine optimal allocation of tasks to teams and other resources. Provide direct oversight for managers including performance evaluations, coaching and professional development. Plan and manage budgets, in collaboration with OIT Finance.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS BA/BS degree in MIS, Computer Science, Business or other field and 5 years of formal managerial experience in a large IT organization. Broad infrastructure experience to include several of the following: experience managing servers, storage, back-ups, virtualization platforms, data centers, cable infrastructure, and networking and telecommunication infrastructure. Experience in supporting a broad base of users and systems. Proven successful time management, problem solving and analytical skills in an information technology setting. Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of constituents.

Position Profile September 2012 Page 4 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Solid understanding of and appreciation for higher education, especially the role of a land-grant research university. Extensive knowledge of ITIL methodologies. Strong personal leadership skills and ability to thrive and work effectively in a collaborative university environment. Prior experience with budget planning and collaborative budget consulting.
