What comes into your mind when you hear the

word critique?

That is correct. Thank you.

and critically. Its main purpose is not
informational, but analytical and persuasive.

Do you understand? Then, let us have an

example to understand further.

aspects can you highlight about the story, and
are there any negative points you would like to
mention? (The students will raise their hands and answer.)

In simple terms, a critique is a review or

analysis of a book or a movie, where you
discuss what you think is good or bad about it
and explain why.
Do you follow?
There are six elements in a critique writing.
First, we are going to talk about the context.

Context is the data that helps to make sense of a

literary text’s message. In this element, genre is
important to determine the particular type or
category of literature such as Science fiction,
fantasy, literary, adventure, etc.

Direction: Determine the genre of the following

films and explain why you say so.

1. Titanic
2. Train to Busan
3. Detective Conan
Expected answers:
Do you understand what is a context in
1. Romance
literature?
2. Action/Horror
3. Mystery/Thriller
The second element is the author’s intention. It
is the written motive or intention. An author’s
purpose is his reason for or intent in writing. It

may be, to persuade, to inform, to entertain, or
to inspire the reader.

Let us analyze this example.

Alyssa, will you please stand and read an

excerpt from a campaign.

The city animal shelter needs more support from

all of us to continue helping animals and our
community. Our shelter is the only one in the
(The student will read the selection.)
tri-county area that does not euthanize animals,
but instead seeks homes for them.

What do you think is the author’s intention? Is

the author trying to persuade, inform, entertain,
or inspire the reader?

Persuade the reader to do what?

animal shelter.

Let us have another example.

When you woke up this morning, did you think Persuade the reader to give more support to help
today would be the day you save a life? In fact, the animal shelter.
it's quite easy to save a life and it only takes a
little bit of your time. You don't even need to be
a paramedic or firefighter. All you have to do is
set aside approximately one hour to donate
blood.

What do you think is the author’s intention?

That’s correct. The author informs the reader the

topic of donating blood. You don’t need to be a
professional to save a life; anyone can
contribute by donating blood. The author is trying to inform the reader into
donating blood.
Let us have another example.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean
not on your own understanding; in all your ways
submit to him, and he will make your paths
straight.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (New International Version)

What do you think is the author’s intention?

Precisely. The best example of writing that will

inspire, raise your spirits, and help you find your
journey out of the darkness is the book of
inspiring verses which is the Bible.
The author is trying to inspire the reader.
Let us move forward to the last element which
.
is the is reaction. It pertains to your own
possible reactions as well as your attitude as a
critic when you read the literary piece. It shows
your agreement or disagreement, approval or
disapproval of the elements used in it.

Direction: State whether you agree or disagree.

1. Money can’t buy happiness.

2. Everything happens for a reason.
3. The best things in life are free.

Let us have another element of a critique

writing.

Literary devices are tools used by authors to

create impact on their writing, to help readers
understand their writing at a deeper level.

Simile it is a form of metaphor in which the

word "as" or "like" is used to compare an object,
concept, character, behavior, etc. with another
thing.

Lianne, will you please stand and give an

example of a simile.

Very good, Lianne.

Next is metaphor. It is used by the author to

compare one thing to another and is described in
non-literal terms. I ran like the wind.

Kurt, can you give us an example of a

metaphor?

Great job, Kurt.

Another literary device is hyperbole. It is an

exaggerated or excessive statement that is not
intended by the reader to be taken literally. For You light up my life.
humorous effect and/or emphasis, it is
sometimes used.

Frences, can you please give an example of

hyperbole?

Wonderful, Frances.

Another literary device is onomatopoeia. It is a

word or group of words that represents a sound
and imitates or implies the sound it makes for I could eat a whole cow.
dramatic, realistic, or poetic effects.

Marco, give us an example of an onomatopoeia.

Very good, Marco.

Moving forward, let us tackle the literary

technique. It consists of two types: the tone and

the mood.
The lion roared.
Tone is the feeling of the writer expressed in
his/her writing. It also defines the overall
writing.

Examples of tone in a story are mostly

adjectives like scared, anxious, excited, worried,
or encouraging.

Can you use these words in a sentence, Brayan?

Mood is about the feeling of the reader towards

a piece of writing. It is how a piece of writing
made the reader feel during the reading process.

Words used to describe the feeling such as sad, A hooded man is staring at me through my
happy, excited, frustrated, or peaceful. window in the middle of the night.

The last element in critique writing is the ending

of the story.

It is the conclusion of the story. It is the part

where conflict is usually resolved. It has three I can feel the shivers ran down my spine.
parts: the beginning, the middle, and the ending.

The beginning is the first part of the story. It is

where the writer catches the attention of the
reader, either with a good opening sentence, a
descriptive character or setting description, or a
glance into the story's subject, issue, or theme.

Then, the middle is where the story's bulk lies. It

presents the subject, provides important key
information, and keeps the attention of the
reader, but most importantly, it is where we
achieve the story’s turning point.

While the ending serves as the conclusion and

solution to the conflict. This is where the story
comes to an end where the character learns a
lesson or comes to deal with the events of what
happened.

Example:

Under this, we also have the point of view. It

has three types: the first person POV, third
person POV, and the third person omniscient.

Let us differentiate these by looking at the

examples.

E. Application
Direction: Construct 10 meaningful sentences
by applying the elements in critique writing.
Write it in your journal notebook. Be creative.

F. Generalization
Let us see if you really understand the lesson.

What is critique in your own words?

Yes, Zean.

Thank you, Zean.

Then, who can enumerate the elements in

critique writing discussed? Critique is an essay criticizing a literary work.

Yes, Crizel.

Good job, Crizel. Thank you.

Now, who can differentiate context, reaction, The elements in critique writing discussed are
and author’s intention? context, author’s intention, reaction, literary
devices, literary technique, and ending of the

Very good, Mico. Then, who can identify and

state the meaning of the literary devices?

Kisses, will you please stand and answer.

a sound.

Goodbye and thank you, Ma’am.
