CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

INTRODUCTION

Rationale

Korean popular culture, commonly known as K-pop, has gained significant

international popularity over the past decade. With its catchy music, mesmerizing dance routines,

and attractive idols, K-pop has amassed a massive global fan base, including students. This study

aims to examine the effects of K-pop culture on the lifestyle choices, behavior, and perception of

students in PCPGTVSFA (President Carlos P Garcia Technical Vocational School of Fisheries

and Arts)

K-pop has become a global phenomenon that has millions of people throughout the world

paying attention to it and influencing their lives, especially the younger generation. The precise

impact of kpop on students attending specialist arts institutes like PCPGTVSFA’s lifestyle

decisions, behavior, and perception is, however, the subject of scan research. To evaluate the

possible influence of K-pop on the lives of these students, it is essential to comprehend these

effects.

Behavioral patterns are the acts, routines, and demeanors that people exhibit. K-pop

celebrities frequently represent particular attitudes and values which might influence how student

act and express themselves. This study will shed light on the impact of k-pop on PCPGTVSFA

student’s behavior and the degree to which it affects their interaction and behaviors by
examining the behavioral modifications and adaptions seen among those students who watch k-

wave content.

Individuals’ thoughts, opinions, and attitudes are greatly influenced by their perceptions.

The way PCPGTVSFA students view themselves, their abilities, and their aspirations may be

impacted by the specific images, ideals, and narrative that Korean wave culture conveys. This

study will clarify the impact of k-pop culture on these student’s thinking and self-concept by

examining how they view themselves, their artistic endeavors, and the word around them.

Overall, thus study will add to the body of knowledge by giving a thorough

understanding of the influences of Korean wave culture on the behavioral choices, perception

and lifestyle of PCPGTVSFA students. The research will help academia as well as inform

legislator, parents, and teachers about how Korean wave culture may affect young artist lives and

development.

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND

This study is supported by the Social Learning theory by Albert Bandura and the

Cognitive Behavioral theory by Aaron Beck

The Social Learning Theory of Albert Bandura, this theory suggests that people of

individuals can learn through observing and later imitate the behavior they have observed, in the

context of Korean wave culture students may observe the lifestyle and behaviors of K-pop idols

through music videos, Korean variety shows, Korean dramas, performance, interviews, and

social media contents. Students who are influenced by the Korean wave may adopt the lifestyle
choices such as fashion trends and food preferences. They may also adopt mannerisms and

develop similar perceptions about self-expression, and creativity, and pursue a lifer path that is

similar to what they see. They may also develop a sense of belonging to the K-pop fandom they

are part of.

In cognitive behavioral theory by Aaron Beck, It indicates that people’s emotions,

thoughts, behavior, and body sensations are linked to each other and whatever people do and

what they think affects how they feel. In line with k wave culture, they often promote specific

lifestyle halants which puts a strong emphasis on the physical appearance and fitness. The

exposure of these students to Korean beauty standards can influence the student’s perception of

the word beauty. This may lead to self-consciousness and a desire to reach this certain standard

that they consequently develop a habit of following strict diets and intense workout routines.

By incorporating these theories, we can understand that the lifestyle choices and behavior

of students who are influenced by K-pop are shaped by both theories. Observation and imitation

(social learning theory) as well as their beliefs about the Korean wave culture (cognitive

behavioral theory) affect their perception and behaviors. The influence of the Korean wave is

beyond mere imitations as it affects the student’s emotions, thoughts, self-expression and their

lifestyle choices.

Review of Related Literature Studies

There were studies that stated the various influence of Korean waves to its fans.

In the study of Jenol & Pazil(2020), they found out that being a fan is a form of escapism

for some individuals in order to maintain their well-being. The para-social relationship that fans
have with their favorite idols offer fans a new ‘reality’ that is preferable.(Jenol & Pazil

2020) They argue that being a fan offers a new reality where they can escape from their everyday

life and immerse into the new reality they prefer.

On the other hand, an article from writing bros said that Korean Wave also influences the

personal identity of K-pop fans. They suggested that excessive K-pop fandom can hinder social

skills and disconnect from reality, leading to confusion about personal identity and life goals.

Isolating and spending an excessive amount of time in their room can blur the line between their

personal identity and their identity as a fan. This can lead to disconnection of their own reality.

As a result of this, their lifestyle choices may be influenced by their desire to imitate their idols

instead of making their own decision

In the study conducted by Dalimunthe,Hariyadi, Agustin and, Safitri they found out that

young people who are influenced by K-pop culture are much more enthusiastic about and

monitor the growth of K-pop culture. They use K-pop idols as role models or reference models

in their daily life. They are willing to spend money to buy the merches of these idols and use

Korean fashion to increase their confidence. They are also active in carrying out activities related

to kpop, these are the behaviors they obtained on their exposure to the Korean wave community.

As stated by Ezra Jean (2018) the Filipino fans not only developed an interest in Koreanovelas or

K-Pop music but also a likeness to Korean Fashion. This means that exposure to the Korean

wave media is affecting their sense of fashion. The fans are more likely to dress in Korean looks

to keep up with the fashion trend. Even sometimes the fans do not look so good as long as they

keep up with their desired Korean fashion look because they are influenced by the Hallyu media

they are exposed to.

According to Laffan (2021), K-Pop fan ship was a significant predictor of increased

happiness, self-esteem, and social connectedness. This suggests that being a fan has a positive

impact in an individual’s well-being. As they engage in the Hallyu they feel strong social

connectedness and sense of belonging that increase their self-esteem.

In summary, the Korean wave has influenced the behavior and lifestyle choices of

students in

Many ways. It serves a form of of escapism, offers new realities that fans prefer. However

excessive fanship can also lead to confusion about their personal identity. On the positive side,

Korean wave culture can positively impact well-being through increased social connectedness

and self-esteem. Fans may also adopt Korean fashion trends and make lifestyle choices based on

their desire to emulate their idols
