The Prophet ( )ﷺsaid: "And I command you with five that Allaah commanded me: LISTENING and OBEYING,
JIHAD, HIJRAH, and the JAMA'AH. For indeed whoever parts from the Jama'ah1 the measure of a hand-span,
then he has cast off the yoke of Islam from his neck, unless he returns. And whoever calls with the call of
Jahiliyyah then he is from the coals of Hell." A man said: "O Messenger of Allaah! Even if he performs Salaat and
fasts?" So he ( )ﷺsaid: "Even if he performs Salaat and fasts. So call with the call that Allaah named you with:
Muslims, Believers, Worshippers of Allaah." 2
This hadeeth “comprehends all types of knowledge”3 and the most important matter that we wish to
draw attention to here is its end: So call with the call of Allaah which Allaah gave: The Muslims, the
Believers, Worshippers of Allaah.
Shaikhul-Islaam Ibn Taimiyah4 reports that one of the Salaf (Pious Predecessors) said, “I do not mind
which out of the two blessings was greater, that Allaah guided me to Islaam, or that he kept me away
from these innovated sects. By Allaah, the Most High, in the Qur’aan He called us the Muslims, the
Believers and the Worshippers of Allaah, so we will not leave the names which Allaah has named us
with in favour of names innovated by the people, which they call themselves by and also their
forefathers for which Allaah has sent down no proof.”
1. At-Teebee said, “What is meant by the Jamaa’ah is the Companions and the Taabi’een and the generation after the Taabi’een
– the Pious Predecessors: That is, I order you to cling to their guidance and their way and to associate with them.” (Tuhfatul-
Ahwadhee Sharh Sunanut-Tirmidhee (8/162)).
2. Reported by at-Tayaalisee (no. 1161-62), Ahmad (4/130, 202 and 344), Jamia at-Tirmidhi, Vol. 5, Book 42, Hadith 2863-64, Ibn
Khuzaimah (no. 1895), Aboo Ya’laa in his Musnad (no. 1571) and in al-Mafaareed (no. 83), and an-Nasaa’ee in al-Kubraa as
occurs in Tuhfatul-Ashraaf (3/3) and al-Arba’eenul-Jihaadiyyah (no.6) of Ibn ‘Asaakir through two chains from Zayd ibn Sallaam,
from Aboo Sallaam, from him. - And its chain of narration is saheeh. Also, See Online: http://www.sunnah.com/urn/730960
