GENDER ROLES AND
STEREOTYPES
Gender roles are learned behaviors in a given
society or community.
Gender stereotypes are relatively fixed and
overgeneralized attitudes and behaviours that are
considered normal and appropriate for a person
FEMALE GENDER STEREOTYPES

for "clean jobs" only such as secretary, librarian, teacher


nurses, not doctors
not as strong as men
supposed to make less money than men
best women are at stay at home moms
does not need to go to college
not politicians
quieter than men and not meant to speak out
submissive
cooks and does housework
FEMALE GENDER STEREOTYPES

responsible for raising children


not required to have technical skills
meant to be the damsel in distress; never the hero
supposed to look pretty
loves to sing and dance
does not play video games
flirts
never in charge
MALE GENDER STEREOTYPES
enjoys working with cars
doctors, not nurses
does "dirty jobs" such as construction, mechanics; not
secretaries, teachers, or cosmetologist
does not do housework and does not take care of children
play video games
play sports
enjoy outdoor activities
always in-charge
MALE GENDER STEREOTYPES
tell their wives what to do
lazy and/or messy
good at math
always work in science, engineering, and other
technical fields
does not cook, sew, or do crafts

and obvious to people who accept it but may or may not
represent reality, so it remains largely an invention or artifice
of society.
