1. Let C be the helix parametrized by r(t) = hcos(t), sin(t), ti for 0 ≤ t ≤ 2π. Find the mass of
C if its density at the point (x, y, z) is
(a) f (x, y, z) = 1 + x + z
(b) the square of the distance from the origin.
2. Find the work done by the force F = hxy, x + yi along
(a) the curve y = x2 from (−1, 1) to (3, 9).
(b) the semicircle x2 + y 2 = 4 from (0, 2) to (0, −2) moving clockwise.
3. Suppose the position of a particle at time t is r(t) = ht − sin(t), 1 − cos(t)i with 0 ≤ t ≤ 2π.
Assume that the friction acting on the particle is given by F = −v where v = r0 (t) is the
velocity of the particle. Find the work done by the friction force against the particle.
4. Let F = 2xy + 2y 2 , x2 + 4xy and let C be the quarter ellipse 4x2 + 9y 2 = 1 from (1/2, 0)
to (0, 1/3).

(a) By parameterizing the curve C, write C F · dr as a definite integral in terms of t. Do
not evaluate.
(b) Show that F is conservative and find the potential function f for F.
(c) Use (b) to evaluate the integral in (a).
5. (a) Show that a constant force does no work on a particle that moves once around the circle
x2 + y 2 = 1.
(b) Does this also hold for the force F = h2x, 3yi?
(c) How much work will the above fields do if the particle only moves around part of a
circle?
6. The force exerted by an electric charge at the origin on an electron placed at (x, y) is

x y
F(x, y) = − 2 ,− .
(x + y 2 )3/2 (x2 + y 2 )3/2
(a) In class, we showed that for f (x, y) = (x2 + y 2 )−1/2 , we have F = ∇f . Determine the
largest region D over which F is conservative with potential function f .
(b) Find the work done by this force on the electron as it moves along the straight line
segment from (0, 1) to (1, 5).
7. Consider the vector field

1 x x x
F(x, y) = 2x − sin , 2 sin .

(a) Determine whether F is conservative or not on the region D = {(x, y) ∈ R2 : y > 0}. If
it is, find all potential functions f (x, y) such that F = ∇f .
(b) Let C be the curve
R that goes, in straight line segments, from (π, 1) to (2, 3) to (3, 4) to
(0, 5). Evaluate C F · dr.

8. Let F(x, y) = ∇ ln(x2 + y 2 ).

(a) Show that

(b) Verify that Py (x, y) ≡ Qx (x, y) on the domain of F, i.e, D = R2 − {(0, 0)}. Since D is
not simply-connected, can we conclude that F is not conservative?
(c) Show in fact Rthat for any path C joining two points A1 and A2 and lying entirely in D,
the value of C F · dr depends only on the ratio rr12 where ri is the distance from Ai to
the origin.

(a) Verify that Py (x, y) ≡ Qx (x, y) on the domain of F, i.e, D = R2 − {(0, 0)}. Since D is
not simply-connected, can we conclude that F is not conservative?
(b) Let Ca be a circular path of radius a centered at the origin, traversed counter-clockwise.
By explicit calculation, show that
Z
F · dr = 2π.

Based on this, can we say anything about the conservativeness of F on D?

(c) Let
y

f1 (x, y) = tan , f2 (x, y) = − tan .
x y

Show that F = ∇f1 and F = ∇f2 . Why does this not contradict your conclusion from
(b)?
