Chapter 5 Field Visits Of Cotton Crop;
Cotton is very important cash crop of pakistan. Cotton production in Pakistan is
integral to the economic development of the country. The nation is largely dependent
on the cotton industry and its related textile sector, and the crop has been given a
principal status in the country.

Pakistan's cotton production is anticipated to decline to a multi-year low due to “a 10%

decrease in the planted area, crop damage from heavy monsoon rains, and severe pest
infestation,”

Khanewal is Very Famous District for cotton

Production. Kabirwala is the Main Tehsil of
khanewal district . So here cotton grown On Large
Scale but From Last decade cotton production Is
going down due to heavy Pest infestation.

Farmers are moving towards other crops. During

my internship when i moved to field i take farmer
Preception about Cotton Production. Many
farmers are know dissappointed. Bus Aa compared
to last year this year cotton gron on large area in
kabirwala territory. Now tripple gene vareity of
cotton is growing on large area. Thease vareities
are free from pinkboll worms . But sucking pest is
still major issue for cotton.

Fig 5.1 Triple Gene Veraity of cotton

Fig5.2 Silver Queen cotton Veraity

In my internship I visited many farmers where cotton crop is grown ,as on intial stage,
I try to get information about production technology mean how farmers increase their
production.

Pest and Disease:

Pest and disease that i find in cotton feild duting my internship are given below;

5.1 Cotton Jassid;

The cotton jassid is a serious sucking pest of cotton in Pakistan. Adults are small, like
the tip of a lentil, and flat. Adults are usually yellowish-green or white with black spots
on the front wings. They jump and fly away at the slightest disturbance. The cotton
jassid sucks sap from the underside of leaves and leaf buds. When jassids are
abundant, cotton growth is stunted, the leaves turn downwards and heavy fruit loss
may occur on pre flowering plants. Leaves turn pale and a rust red colour develops at
the edges. During a severe attack, leaf shedding occurs.

Treatment;

Brand Name Active Ingridient Dose Againts

Lagnum 75 %SP Acephate 75 SP 250 g/Acre Cotton Jassid

Fig 5.1.1 & 5.1.2 Attack of Cotton Jassid

5.2 Aphid & White fly;

Aphis gossypii is a tiny insect, an aphid in the superfamily Aphidoidea in the order
Hemiptera. It is a true bug and sucks sap from plants. It is a widely distributed pest of
a variety of agricultural crops. The cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii) is distributed
throughout the world but prefers the warmer regions.

Whitefly is a serious pest of cotton that lowers yield by feeding on the underside of the
leaf and spreading diseases like Cotton Leaf Curl Virus. Whiteflies feed on the sap of
the leaves and release a fluid on to the leaves on which a black fungus grows.

Although sooty mold doesn’t infect plants, the mold can indirectly damage the plant
by coating the leaves to the point that sunlight can’t reach the leaf surface. Without
adequate sunlight, the plant’s ability to carry on photosynthesis is reduced, which can
stunt plant growth. Coated leaves also might prematurely age and die, causing
premature leaf drop.

Recomendation;

5.3 Thrips(Thrips tabaci);
Thrips are another sucking insect type which suck the sap of the young cotton
leaves, the leaves turn yellowish to pale green. The younger leaves turn upward
with reduced size and severe infestations may make the leaf edges turn brownish
burnt like.

Recommendation;

5.4 Pink bollworm (Pectinophora gossypiella)

Pink boll worm attacks on the flowers and make them irregular shape more or less
like rose flowers usually called the rosette. Worms feeds inside the bolls, seed kernels
and the entry holes will be covered with their fecal matter. Boll dropping is noticed
due to the pink bollworm attack.

It is most destructive pest of cotton crop. It is resposible for economical loss in cotton
crop. It managmesnt is very difficult.

5.6 American bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera):

The larvae of boll worms will feed on the inside contents of bolls making holes and
larva’s head will be inside and body be outside. The feacal pellets will be seen on the
bolls. Each larva of American boll worm can damage up to 30 – 40 bolls. Minimum
infestation of this Helicoverpa armigera or American boll worm is noticed on
transgenic Bt Cotton varieties.

5.7 Cutworms;
larvae causing the damage are usually active at night and hide during the day in the
soil at the base of the plants or in plant debris of toppled plant; larvae are 2.5–5.0 cm
(1–2 in) in length; larvae may exhibit a variety of patterns and coloration but will
usually curl up into a C-shape when disturbed.

Chapter 6 Field Visit of Sugarcane;

Sugarcane is an important cash crop of Pakistan. It is mainly grown for sugar and sugary
production. It is an important source of income and employment for the farming
community of the country. It also forms essential item for industries like sugar, chip board,
paper, barrages, confectionery, uses in chemicals, plastics, paints, synthetics, fiber,
insecticides and detergents. Sugarcane production in the country has increased over
time..

6.1 Sugarcane Stem Borer;

Scientific name of sugarcane stem borer is Chilo infuscatellus (Snellen) with family
Crambidae and order Lepidptera. It is also a serious problem of sugarcane crop. larvae
attack the base of the plant and start feeding on them. The central whorl of the leaves
in the stem (growing point) is cut by the caterpillars which result in wilting and drying.
The central dead shoot is also called the 'dead-heart'. These plants though don't
develop further but the dormant buds sprout and give side-shoots. After the cane
development, the attack of the stem borer does not develop dead-hearts and the
destruction is restricted only to a few internodes only. Even then, it causes a major
yield decline.

Recommendation;

Chapter 7 Field Visit Of Tobacoo;

The cultivation of tobacco usually takes place annually. The tobacco is germinated
in cold frames or hotbeds and then transplanted to the field until it matures. It is grown
in warm climates with rich, well-drained soil. About 4.2 million hectares of tobacco
were under cultivation worldwide in 2000, yielding over seven million tonnes of
tobacco.

The pest that i observed in tobacco field are given below

7.1 Tobacco Cutworm(Spodoptera litura);
They voraciously feed on the leaves. Entire seedbeds defoliated within a week. The
pest causes damage to an extent of 80-100% in the nurseries and 10-25% in the field
crop.

Recommendation;

Chapter 10 Achievements

 Got training about sale call and presentation about the product.
 Excutes sale call training and done field advisory services timely
 Met with farmers and call for effective sale call of the products.
 Gave breifing about the products in farmer meetings.
 Got complete knowledge about the products offered by the
company.
Chapter 11- Results And Discussion;
The final results obtained to me were a tremendous journey towards a good
professional life. The things which I want to discuss were product acceptability by the
farmers was 99%. They were very much known to the products released by the
company and also the significant results obtained. Farmers were very much conscious
of their crop. They always think to save the crop and earns for betterment of their
likelihood. They were very much aware of the situation in the field of agriculture.

Yaqoob Group is taking care of these farming communities through providing quality
seeds and also solutions against diseases and insect pests. These achievements were
resulting in satisfaction by the farming communities. Excellent field advisory services
by the field officers lead the company’s income.

The franchise system in Pakistan and especially in south Punjab is leading a critical
role to farming communities. They provide quality pesticides and seeds in order to
generate their income to improve their likelihood.

My experience with yaqoob group of pakistan esspacilly Leader AG is very Excellent

and Learn a lot. Working in feild intraction with dealors and farmer and markeating is
good experience.
