“The Sacrifice and Strength of the Aunt

Breadwinner”

In the tapestry of family dynamics, there exist unsung heroes whose sacrifices often
go unnoticed, yet their contributions are indispensable. Among them stands an aunt-
breadwinner, a figure whose resilience and selflessness shape the lives of those around her.

All families have the so-called breadwinner, mostly the eldest child, as they are more
mature and mold to be a role model for the younger generations. Thus, in my status, it
happens. Raise in by my grandma on the father side, together with my uncle’s and auntie's, I
witness how my auntie Suscelyn, my role model, is a is a remarkable woman in my eyes who
embarked from nothing to an extraordinary journey towards success.

My mommy, Celyn, is the eldest of the nine children of my grandparents. She was
raised in a little barangay in Poblacion Ilawod, Passi City, Iloilo. Given the situation of nine
children with just my grandpa working as a bus conductor, it is quite harsh and difficult to
raise all of the nine children given that my grandma is a housewife, so my grandparents have
sent all of them to school. Being the eldest means a big responsibility to her, as she needs to
provide support to her parents and siblings whose ages are not far from her.

She diligently attended school together with her siblings at the nearest elementary
school, and even if they had no allowance, they still attended school in order to take steps
toward pursuing her dreams. During her high school years, she was on top of her classes and
even played sports, including volleyball, which led her to be a scholar at one of the schools
in Iloilo City, where she graduated with her bachelor’s degree flawlessly. For some, coming
from a big family, it is difficult to attend school, and sometimes they choose to work rather
than attend school as they are already earning. They don’t need to work really hard in their
studies, but my mommy, Celyn, pursues studies rather than choose uncertainties because
she believes that good education brings a good probability of a good future.

She was a role model to her siblings; she was the epitome of resilience,
determination, hard work, patience, resourcefulness, and strategic thinking
that led her to what she is today. As of the moment, she is enjoying the
wonderful time of her life, delving into the life in another country and doing
the things she loves the most, like volleyball, to maintain balance and
well-being, which enriches her social circle. Even up to now, she has
lived with that kind of routine. She always reminds me that I must study
hard and work on things she loves. She became the primary provider
because she confronted challenges with unwavering determination.
Despite the weight of her responsibilities, she perseveres, drawing upon
her inner strength and fortitude to navigate the complexities of her
situation.

With her selfless commitment to the welfare of their family, whether

caring for the aging parents, supporting younger siblings, or raising nieces and
nephews as her own, she sacrifices personal ambitions and desires for the
greater good. Her love knows no bounds, as she dedicates herself wholeheartedly
to ensuring the happiness and well-being of her loved ones.

My aunt, Celyn, serves as a beacon of stability and guidance in times of

uncertainty. Her nurturing presence fosters a sense of security and belonging within
the family unit, providing comfort and reassurance during moments of distress.
Through her wisdom and compassion, she imparts valuable life lessons and instills
values of resilience, perseverance, and empathy in the hearts of those under her care.
