1. Purpose of the test:

The purpose of this document is to elaborate the tests that will be performed on MV Power Cables at
site prior to its energization.

2. Reference document:
IEC 60502-2 & 2ECS06-0000-10365488 (Factory test report MV power cables)

3. Testing Equipments required:

a) High Voltage Test kit
b) Megger
c) Digital Multimeter

4. Preliminary checks
a) Make sure the work area is clean.
b) Barricade the testing area by using warning/barricade tape.
c) Only authorized personnel related to testing activities shall be allowed to enter the barricaded area.
They must wear all the mandatory personal protective equipment.
d) Make sure that all the testing equipment are calibrated.
e) Make sure that all the testing equipment connection are made correctly.
f) Ensure the proper earthing of the panel and cable shield.

5. AC High Voltage test of MV Power cables

(For 1Cx630sqmm - 15 kV Power cable and 3Cx35sqmm, 3Cx70sqmm – 20kV Power Cable)
a) Cables must be isolated and megger shall be done before the HV test of cable.
b) Prepare installed cables for test by ensuring the circuit is de-energized, remove any temporary
grounds and disconnect cable form equipment.
c) Erect safety barriers and post safetyman at cable end.
d) Check the insulation resistance of the cable using a megger tester. The test voltage should be 5000
volts for 5000 volt and above cables. Measure the insulation resistance of each core and any
metallic armour / copper tape screen or panel.
e) Each cable shall be high voltage tested as follows: each core to ground, with the metallic armour /
copper tape screen or panel, other cores and any metallic armour / copper tape screen or sheath
grounded at one end only.

f) The A. C. test voltage shall be 33.6 kV for 5 minutes for 20kV power cables and 24.4 kV for 5
minutes for 15kV cables. (which is 80% of Factory test voltage values).
g) Increase the AC voltage smoothly to test voltage between terminal R phase of cable to earth
duration five minutes.
h) All the values to be recorded as shown in the site test format.
i) Reduce the voltage gradually to zero.
j) Discharge the tested terminal R phase by using the discharge earth.
k) Repeat the above procedure for S & T phase of cable for HV test.
l) On completion of tests the cable shall be left with all cores and shields grounded, to allow the
residual charge to dissipate.
m) Insulation resistance (IR) of cable shall be measured after HV test,
n) Ensure the healthiness of the cable insulation through the IR test value.
