Each component of the power cable has its important function, so need carefully
select each component material to ensure the cables reliability in the process, which
are made of these materials. Generally, XLPE power cable consists of conductor
(copper or aluminum), cross linked polyethylene insulated, metallic shield (corrugated
aluminum sheath or metal wire screen), PVC or PE oversheath.

When cable is running under the condition of high voltage and alternative current,
the AC current tends to the conductor surface (skin effect) and the magnetic fields
produced by nearby cables interferes with the distribution of electric current within
the conductor (proximity effect), which lead to increase the resistance of conductor
under AC conditions, resulting in cause a larger power loss.

Outer sheath material is PVC or PE generally. PVC has high dielectric properties
and good insulation resistance, and it is flame-retardant and resistant to ozone, acid,
alkali and most organic solvents. When the cable is exposed to strong chemical
conditions, such as gasoline, wood preservatives (wood pomegranate oil), the cable
sheath is recommended to use the linear PE material which has good resistance to
impact (mechanical), environmental stress, scratch grinding and water permeability.
When cable is laid in the environment where is vulnerable to termite attack, the
outer sheath of cable is recommended to use polyolefin materials with high hardness.
The comparison between termite damage and material hardness is as follows:

System design- Metallic sheath Earthing and Bonding
The sheath induced voltage is not only related to current or short-circuit current
through the conductor but also related to the length of cable and the arrangement of
phases.
When the AC current passes through the single cable conductor, the magnetic lines of
force will be generated around conductor and that will interlink with the metallic
sheath and a voltage will be induced on the metallic sheath. Where cable sheaths are
bonded and earthed at both ends, the sheath and ground will provide a low impedance
closed loop to generates an induced circulating current. This circulating current will
heat the cable and therefore de-rating the system current carrying capability.
Generally, the cables are installed in touching trefoil formation to make that the sheath
impendence and loss are equivalent in all three-phases to minimize the sheath power
loss for solidly bonded systems. Where the cable loop is short and power transmission
is small, the solidly bonded system should be used. For this bonded method, no SVLs
and no more maintenance are necessary..
36 / 65

Figure 1
Solidly Bonded System schematic diagram

4 - bonding lead for metallic sheath 5 -
Bonding lead for gantry
The metallic sheath is grounded directly at one end and linked SVL at the other
end and other parts of the metallic sheath are insulated to ground. In such a way,
there is no current path between the metallic sheath and ground and that
circulating currents in the sheath is prevented and the transmission capacity of the
cable is increased.
Sheath losses are reduced, and therefore cable heating due to sheath
losses is reduced.
37 / 65
38 / 65
SVLs
The basic type of special bonded system is single point bonding, mid-point
bonding and cross linked bonding.
Single point bonding system
Single point bonding system is that cable sheath is bonded and earthed at on end
of the route only and the end remote from the earthing point is linked by SVLs.
()
For single point bonding system, a parallel earth continuity conductor (ECC)
shall be installed along the cable loop at a specified notoginseng arrangement
proximity to the power cables and transposed at the mid point of the section..
During single-phase fault, fault current can flow back to the neutral point of
power cable system via the ECC especially when the fault occurred in the ECC
network, most of the fault current will flow past the ECC.
flux induced by the earth current can counterbalance
Due to
the magnetic
cables (both current in the opposite direction), it can reduce the sheath voltage
39 / 65
ECC should be earthed reliably at both ends, and its cross-sectional area shall be
enough to meet the requirements of thermal stability of fault current.

3
Cable sheaths are bonded and earthed at the mid point of the route only, with the
sheaths rising in voltage at the terminations. This method would be applied for
example where the overall route length precludes the use of single point bonding for
reasons of excessive standing voltage level, as shown in figure 3.

When cable route length is excessive and consists of two section lengths,
sectionalizing insulated joint could be used to connected the adjacent cables to
41 / 65
insulate the adjacent metallic sheaths each other. Each metallic sheath is earthed at
one end and linked via SVLs at side of insulated joint. As shown in figure 4.

Cross bonding system
(
5)
For long cable systems, a cross bonded system could be used. In this way, cable
route is divided into several major sections and each major section is divided into
42 / 65
three minor sections of same length in principle. In each minor section, the
adjacent cables are jointed with sectionalizing insulated joint and three phase
cable sheath are cross linked for transpose each other by link box with SVLs.
Both ends of major section are earthed via link box directly.

The induced voltages in the three phase cable sheaths are displaced vectorally by

through cable sheaths will also be zero. The induced sheath voltage of each minor
section is the highest one of whole cable route, as shown in figure 6.

Packaging, Transportation, Installation and Maintenance
Packaging
The cable is wound on a steel drum for dispatch. Cable drum is covered with
plastic film and steel sheet to protect from UV irradiation and mechanical damage
during transportation.
Cable inner end is sealed in factory using a metal cap to protect from ingress of
moisture. The outer end is fitted with pulling eye, when laying the cable by pulling
eye method, the pulling wire shall be connected to the pulling eye via a twister and
dynamometer.
Transportation
Cable drum are fixed in the transportation tools in accordance with the
professional requirements, in order to avoid sliding in transit. To check and confirm t
whether cable drum is in good condition before unloading.
Cable shall stand on drum flange and not allowed to be placed flatwise. The
drum shall be rolled in controlled manner as per the direction of rolling arrow marked
on drum sides when cable drum needs to be rolled.
Generally using the crane, forklift or loading dock to load and unload the cable.
During lifting cables, great cares shall be given to prevent cable drum, steel sheet and
cable to be damaged. It shall to avoid cable suffering from violent collision. In order
to avoid any damage, lifting tools shall not touch the cable when lifting. When lifting
cables, it should be lifted by a special steel rope which fixed on the specified positions
on drum or on a shaft which through the centre hole of drum. When using crane or
forklift to lift cable, it shall have adequate lifting capacity.
In principle, the cables shall be drag and drop from the upper of cable drum. The
cable tray should be placed to make the direction of dragging and dropping to
opposite to the direction of rolling arrow.
The cable drum should be operated manually when dragging and dropping the
cables to avoid produce unexpected tensile stress. When the cable has been pulled out
longer length, the inner ends of the cable could be moved and the operation of cable
pulling shall be stopped at any time and re-fix the inner ends.
Checking whether the sealing of both ends are in good condition before
installation and after the installation to ensure that no any damages happened during
the installation.

Cable laying methods
Before deciding the method of laying cable, the bending radius, pulling tension
and side wall pressure shall be calculated and validated within in the permissible
requirements.
Minimum Permissible bending radius
When laying the cable, it could be bent several times and bending radius shall be
controlled above the minimum permissible radius , but it is not allow to be bent for
many times. If laying cable at lower temperature, it is suggested to bend with larger
bending radius, which can avoid the damage caused by bending stiffness increased.

Minimum allowable installation temperature
When laying cable, cable must have a high enough temperature. The minimum
allowable installation temperature depends the outer sheath material of cable. The
following principles should be followed:
PVC
PE
.
Due to the cable has larger rigidity at low temperature, installation personnel are
at increased risk of accidents.
48 / 65
Generally cables are pulled into position using caterpillar, pulling eye or bond
pulling.
Pulling the cable with caterpillar
A specific number of caterpillar are provided along the route with controllable electric
drive to bear and drive the cable. The pulling force is applied to the cable sheath
which is distributed with number of points along the cable, therefore, the force on
each point is smaller. This
the cable laying with big cross sectional conductor size or longer length of. it is
important to ensure that controllable electric is provided along the cable route and all
caterpillars run at exactly synchronicity.
Pulling cable with Pulling eye
Using a steel cable attached to the factory fitted pulling eye and cooperating with
rope winch and rollers to pull the cable to its position. During this process, great care
must be taken to ensure that the conductor is not over-stressed and that side pressures
are within the acceptable limits.
49 / 65
Pulling cable with bond pulling
After surveying all route, calculations show that permissible force will be
exceeded, the bond pulling method shall be used.
Using a steel cable along the route to take all the stress effectively to carry cable,
the steel cable is tied to the cable sheath at regular intervals and the steel cable is then
pulled by a winch to carry the cable into position.
This approach allows long lengths of high voltage cable to be pulled along
difficult routes without applying excessive forces to the conductor risking irreparable
damage to the cable..
50 / 65
When the power cable is running under cyclic load, conductor expands and
contracts process during heating and cooling. It produces a large force in a fully
restrained system, which is compressive dering expansion and tensile during
contraction.
51 / 65
Cable Commissioning test
After the c installation of cable system is completed, tests on new installed cable
should be carried out to check the quality during the transportation, laying and
installation. The following site tests are recommended.
(U) 5min
(U0) 24
The AC test voltage (U) should be applied between the conductor and the
metallic screen for 5 minutes; Alternatively, a voltage of
52 / 65
U0 may be applied
DC voltage of 10kV shall be applied for 1 minute between the metallic sheath and
the earth.
XLPE power cable does not any need special maintenance. A DC voltage at 5kV
or insulation resistance measurement is recommended on the cable oversheath to
ensure that cables are not received any external mechanical damages in operation.
