1.1.1 TECHNICAL DATA

Model type: SPOL

Rated voltage [kV]: 362 ÷ 550 kV
Rated current [A]: 4000
Rated short-time current [kA x s]: 63 x 3
Drive type: CMM

1.1.2 MAIN FEATURES

The disconnectors of the series SPO are of semi-pantograph type with horizontal
movement.
In agreement with IEC 62271-102 Att. B, the main contacts are equipped with
auxiliary contacts to avoid an y damage switching currents may cause during the
opening and closing operations. In addition the contacts are designed to be always
protected against pollution and icing, whether in the closed or in the open
positions.
The mobile arm is made of two articulated semi-arms. The semi-arms are made of
very strong and highly conductive aluminum tubes. A balancing unit is located
inside the lower semi-arm. The joints of the mobile arm are made with pivots
revolving on bearings.
The lower support bases are in hot-galvanized steel, resistant to the heaviest
stress (stress on line terminals, stress due to short-time currents, etc.).

2.2 PACKAGING AND SHIPMENT GRID abcd

2.2 PACKAGING AND SHIPMENT

All the items of the equipment are shipped in cases or crates, which must be
handled with care in accordance with the standard symbols on the sides of the
containers.

2.2.1 TYPES OF PACKAGES

Shipment packaging is designed to fully protect the shipping units against
mechanical damage and against weather during transportation, unloading and
handling on site. It ensures that the product is not damaged and that all quality
features, that are guaranteed and tested in all stages of production, remain
unaltered.

2.2.1.1 Shipping cases

The shipping cases are strong, plywood-covered wooden crates, covered on the
sides and reinforced internally with wooden boards. Special-shape wood-pieces
are fastened to the bottom of the crates, and if needed to the sides too, in order to
hold the content fast; if needed the shaped pieces are lined with foam to damp
shocks to the content.
If needed, the content is wrapped in plastic film or contained in special boxes
placed on the bottom of the crate.
In order to ensure adequate ventilation, the shipping cases are equipped with
weatherproof openings.

2.2.2 SHIPPING UNITS

The subdivision of each switchgear into shipping units is devised to speed up the
installation on site and simplify the handling of the shipping units.

2.3 RECEIPT AND STORAGE

2.3.1 RECEIPT
As soon as you receive the crates, inspect the content of each package and make
sure that nothing is damaged and that all the items written in the packing list are
there.
Damaged items or discrepancies between content and packing list must be
reported to ALSTOM immediately.
If after the inspection the cases should be relocated or stored for a long time,
restore them to the original conditions.
When handling or unloading the cases, take care not to damage the equipment.

2.3.2 STORAGE
Place the packages in a dry and sheltered location, or if outdoor, make sure the
area is drained well.

2.4 UNPACKING AND LIFTING GRID abcd

For outdoor storage, the place should be dry and ventilated and the crates should
be raised at least 10 cm from the ground with wooden beams.

Important Concerning the storage of the drive, consult the specific

instruction manual for the suitable procedure.

2.4 UNPACKING AND LIFTING

Unpack the materials with care in order to avoid loosing or damaging any items.
Handle the complete units taking care especially of porcelain insulators even if
already assembled.
Open the shipping cases on site just before installation, in a position where the
hoisting equipment may hook the materials with ease.
Sling the material (lower parts, insulators, live parts) with an
Important adequate lifting apparatus as indicated in the following
sections of this instruction manual.

Do not remove the safety band (5.1.3 Fig. 5.1) that ties up the two
arms (5.1.1 and 5.1.2 Fig. 5.1) of the live mobile part until the
disconnector has been completely assembled.
Caution
Removing the tie is very dangerous, since the balancing spring,
without the reaction exerted by the weight of the parts, would
violently open the two arms.

of the support (7.2.1 Fig. 7B) of the clamp of the drive; subtract 15 mm from this
distance. Such distance is called "La":

La=L-15 (with "L" and "La" in mm)

Measure the vertical drive shafts supplied with the disconnector and, if they are
longer than "La", cut them to the exact size and then deburr the edges and
reinstate the surface protection by cold galvanizing.
Make sure that the drives are in the OPEN position.
In order to ensure the best grip, before installing the vertical
drive shaft of the switchgear, polish with abrasive paper the
Important lower part of the shaft for a length of about 150 mm.
Check also that the internal surface of the clamp is free from any
trace of grease or other impurities.
Remove the lower fastening bolt installed previously and, by pivoting on the other
bolt still installed, tilt each drive to permit the installation of the vertical drive shaft.
Insert the top of each vertical drive shaft into the hub of the base and lock it in the
correct position with the lock pin and the cotter pins.
While keeping the drive slanted, insert the bottom of the vertical drive shaft into the
clamp 7.12 Fig. 4.3.
Bring back each drive to the correct position and fasten the other fastening bolts to
the support structure.

If needed, after loosening the fastening bolts, raise or lower the drives and then
tighten the bolts again, in order to get - when the adjustment is complete - the
exact dimensions shown in the specific installation drawing DIN-….
Check also that the drives are horizontal in two perpendicular directions; if needed
shim the fastening brackets
Fasten temporarily the clamps, but do not tighten the screws.
Check that the drive shafts are vertical.
Now you can tighten the clamps with the screws - with a torque of around 80 Nm -
to lock the shafts. In order to assist in this operation, apply some normal grease on
the bolts.

4.2.3.1 Vertical drive shaft

Vertical drive shafts and drives (Fig. 4.3)
Carry out a few manual OPENING/CLOSING and check that the end positions
(CLOSED and OPEN) of the drive match the respective end positions of the
mobile arms of the disconnector.
If needed, you can synchronize the mobile arms of the disconnector and the drive
by loosening the bolts 7.10 that fasten the clamp 7.12. You can than advance or
retard the OPENING/CLOSING of the mobile arms by turning the vertical drive
shaft while holding the clamp 7.12 firmly fixed. When you have achieved the
required condition, tighten the screws with a torque of around 80 Nm to lock the
shaft.

4.2.4 DISASSEMBLING AND REPLACEMENT OF MAIN PARTS DRIVES

If the drive needs to be replaced, proceed as follows:

 set the disconnector and/or the earthing switch to the OPEN position;
disconnect the flexible conductor from the vertical drive shaft and disconnect
all electric connections;
 uncouple the vertical drive shaft;
 sling the drive and lift it slightly to put the sling in tension;
 remove the four bolts that fasten the cabinet to the support structure;

SECTION 5 – LIVE PART

READ CAREFULLY THE CONTENT OF THIS SECTION BEFORE

Important BEGINNING ANY OPERATION ON THE DISCONNECTOR OR ON
ANY OF ITS PARTS AND COMPONENTS.

CONTENT OF THIS SECTION

This section contains important information which shall be known before beginning
any operation on the live part of the disconnector.
For example, it indicates the main technical data about the live part, manufacturer
warnings, and safety requirements to be observed for a correct and safe
assembling procedure.
This section also contains the instructions about the assembling of the equipment
and gives the exact sequence of steps required for a correct installation.

5.1 GENERAL
The disconnectors of the series SPO are of semi-pantograph type with horizontal
movement.
The mobile arm is made of two articulated semi-arms. The semi-arms are made of
very strong and highly conductive aluminum tubes. A balancing unit is located
inside the lower semi-arm. The joints of the mobile arm are made with pivots
revolving on bearings.
The main female fixed contacts are made of pairs of copper blades, each pressed
by stainless steel springs, that ensure adequate and constant pressure on the
male contacts.
The male mobile contact is made of a shaped copper plate fastened firmly to the
end of the mobile arm.
The contacts couple with a sliding movement and the contact making is self-
cleaning and self-tightening; this ensures the best behavior in the case of stress
due to short circuit currents.
The lower support bases are in hot-galvanized steel, resistant to the heaviest
stress (stress on line terminals, stress due to short-time currents, etc.).

5.2 INSTALLATION AND ADJUSTMENT

5.2.1 CONDITIONS AND PRELIMINARY OPERATIONS BEFORE INSTALLATION
a) To install correctly the live parts, the lower bases and the insulators must be
assembled according to the instructions contained in the relevant section of
this manual.
b) Screws, bolts and nuts must be tightened with a torque wrench with the torque
values in the tables of Attachment "A".
c) Prepare and treat the permanent contact surfaces of live parts, through which
current will flow (e.g. the contact surface between the terminal connection pad
or shank and the clamp of the line conductor) as follows:
Wipe off any trace of grease from the contact surfaces with a non-abrasive
solvent. If the surfaces are oxidized, clean them up with a steel brush or
fine abrasive paper;
 Cover them immediately with antioxidant paste;
Connect the surfaces as soon as possible.

5.2.2 INSTALLATION OF THE LIVE PART OF THE SPO / SPOT / SPO2T

DISCONNECTOR
The sequence of steps required for installing the live part is the
same for all types and does not depend on the electrical
Important characteristics (rated current).

5.2.3 MOBILE LIVE PARTS WITH FIXED CONTACTS FOR THE EARTHING
SWITCHES
With reference to fig. 5.1, do not remove the safety band 5.1.3
that ties up the two arms 5.1.1 and 5.1.2 of the live mobile part
until the disconnector has been completely assembled.
Caution
Removing the tie is very dangerous, since the balancing spring,
without the reaction exerted by the weight of the parts, would
violently open the two arms.
To protect the flexible conductors 5.1.11 during transportation, on the front of the
bearing frame 5.1.5 a red-colored metal protection bracket 5.1.4A is applied.
Lift the live part of each pole to man's height as shown in figure A and remove the
protection bracket 5.1.4A after loosening the bolts 5.1.4B.
Check that the holes on the upper flange of the rotary insulator Fig. 3.13 are at 45°
in relation to the longitudinal centerline of the base, so that they match the holes
on the fastening flange 5.1.7 of the live part.

Position then the flange 5.1.7 on the head of the rotary insulator while laying down
at the same time the flanged area 5.1.13 of the bearing frame 5.1.5 onto the
upper flange of the support insulator.
Fasten temporarily the bearing frame 5.1.5 of the live mobile part to the support
insulator with the screws, nuts and spring washers of the fastening.
Fasten the flange 5.1.7 to the rotary insulator with the threaded bars, nuts and
spring washers of the fastening kit.
Remove the lifting equipment.
Align the live part to the base under it by positioning the bolts on the holes.
Check with a spirit level that the bearing frame 5.1.5 is level in the two
perpendicular directions.
If needed shim with the C-washers of the fastening kit the bolts that join the
flanged area 5.1.13 of the bearing frame 5.1.5 to the head of the support
insulator.
Fasten the bearing frame 5.1.5 to the support insulator and the flange 5.1.7 to the
rotary insulator; tighten all the bolts.

5.2.4 MAIN FIXED CONTACTS WITH FIXED CONTACTS FOR THE EARTHING
SWITCHES
With reference to Fig. 5.3, ling the fixed contact 5.2, as shown in figure 5.4, then
lift it and position it onto the respective support insulator; the opening of the
protection cone 5.2.6 must be directed toward the mobile arm.
Fasten the support 5.2.2 of the fixed contact 5.2 to the flange of the insulator with
the screws, nuts and spring washers of the fastening kit.
Remove the lifting equipment.

GRID abcd

5.3 ADJUSTMENT OF THE DISCONNECTORS SPO / SPOT / SPO2T

In the following sections you can find the procedures for the adjustment and fine
tuning of the equipment.

5.3.1 ADJUSTMENT OF THE MOBILE LIVE PART AND OF THE FIXED CONTACT
As shown in figure 5.7 (C), make with a felt-tip pen on each front
arm 5.1.2 Fig. 5.1 a reference mark at a distance "d" of 165 mm
Important (tolerance -0 +10 mm) from the centerline of the screws 5.1.38
Fig. 5.2 fastening the mobile contact.
Before carrying out any testing and adjustment operation, remove the safety band
5.1.3 Fig. 5.1 that ties the two arms of each mobile live part.

When removing safety band, hold down the front arm 5.1.2 Fig.
Caution 5.1 in order to avoid a sudden raising.

Before carrying out the set-up operations described in the

following text, move back the end-stop screws so that the
Important insulator fastening flange can rotate freely. When all set-up
operations are complete, reinstate the end-stop screws so that
they are in contact again with the striking surface on the flange
both in the OPEN and in the CLOSED position.
While grasping the arm with your hands so as to control their movement, CLOSE
carefully each pole of the disconnector; when the disconnector is completely
CLOSED, check that the front arm 5.1.2 Fig.5.1 is horizontal Fig. 5.7 (a). The
misalignment of the centerlines of the fixed contact 5.2 Fig. 5.3 front arm 5.1.2 Fig.
5.1 and rear arm 5.1.1 Fig. 5.1, is acceptable if it does not exceed the value shown
in figure A-b; in any case, when the disconnect is completely CLOSED, the
centerline of the front arm must be horizontal and aligned with the centerline of the
fixed contact.
In the conditions above are not satisfied, you can position correctly the two arms
by carrying out concurrently the following adjustments:

adjust the linkage 5.1.10 Fig. 5.1 to position the rear arm 5.1.1 Fig. 5.1 in
the correct OPEN and CLOSED positions, make sure the end stops
5.1.23 Fig. 5.1 are not reached;
use the nuts 5.1.17 Fig. 5.1 of the threaded bar 5.1.18 Fig. 5.1 to move
backward or forward the rack located on the elbow of the mobile arm,
adjust then first of all the centering of the upper arm 5.1.2 Fig. 5.1 on the
fixed contact.
Check that during the closing operation the Teflon guide ring 5.1.28 Fig. 5.2 of
each mobile contact 5.1.24 Fig. 5.2 is centered on the guide cone 5.2.6 Fig. 5.3, of
the fixed contact 5.2 Fig. 5.3.

SPOT / SPO2T
GRID abcd
If the fixed contact 5.2 Fig. 5.3 and the mobile contact 5.1.24 Fig. 5.2 are
misaligned vertically, you can raise or lower the lower bases by adjusting the nuts
that fasten them to the support structures.
If the fixed contact and the mobile contact are misaligned transversely, you can
loosen the bolts fastening the bearing frame 5.1.5 Fig. 5.1 to the respective
support insulator and/or the bolts that fasten the fixed contact to the respective
support insulator and than carry out the adjustment.
When the operations above are complete and with disconnector in the completely
CLOSED position, the misalignment between the mark made on the fore arm and
the external edge of the rim 5.2.7 Fig. 5.1 of the guide cone 5.2.6 Fig. 5.1 must not
exceed +10 / -30 mm, as shown in figure 5.6 (c).
While grasping the front and rear arms with your hands so as to control their
movement, OPEN each pole of the disconnector and check that the front arm
5.1.2 Fig. 5.1 reaches the end stop 5.1.15 Fig. 5.1 and rests on it without forcing. If
needed, you can move back or advance the start of the control lever 5.1.9 Fig. 5.1
by using the free space on the bolts 5.2.3 Fig. 5.1 for the fastening and adjustment
of the rotary insulator. As an alternative, you can adjust the vertical drive shaft 4.1

recommendations of the manufacturer and the danger or caution warnings to
conform to for a safe and correct procedure.
This section contains important information on the installation of the equipment
and lists the operations to carry out in sequence and the methods to apply for
correct installation.

READ CAREFULLY THE TEXT OF THIS SECTION BEFORE

Important STARTING ANY OPERATION ON THE SWITCHGEAR OR ON
ANY OF ITS COMPONENTS.

6.1 GENERAL
These series of earthing switches has been designed with the goal of constructing
a reliable and modular piece of equipment, simple to install and maintain, suitable
for installation in any location, both indoors and outdoors.
As add-on to line disconnectors, the equipment is made of:
A mobile arm, hinged on the lower base of the earthing switch and carrying a
mobile contact at its free end;
A fixed contact, installed on the live part of the earthing switch.
The mobile arm is an aluminum alloy tube and is detachable from its lower base to
make transport easier.
Thanks to the modular design, the earthing switches of the series STA are suitable
for installation on systems with operating voltage from 362 to 550 kV.

6.2 INSTALLATION AND ADJUSTMENT

6.2.1 CONDITIONS AND PRELIMINARY OPERATIONS BEFORE INSTALLATION
a) For the correct installation of the earthing switch, the lower base, the insulators
and the live part must be assembled in accordance with the directions in the
applicable sections.
b) Screws, bolts and nuts must be tightened with a torque wrench with the torque
values stated in the Attachment "A".
c) Prepare and treat the permanent contact surfaces of live parts, through which
current will flow (e.g. the contact surface between the terminal connection pad
or shank and the clamp of the line conductor) as follows:
Wipe off any trace of grease from the contact surfaces with a non-abrasive
solvent. If the surfaces are oxidized, clean them up with a steel brush or
fine emery paper;
 Cover them immediately with antioxidant paste;
Connect the surfaces as soon as possible.

6.2.2 EARTHING SWITCH UNITS

Before carrying out the installation, make sure that the serial

6.2.3 MOBILE ARMS OF THE EARTHING SWITCHES

The optional ice protection of the mobile contact of the earthing
switch is required for ice thickness equal or greater than 20 mm.
Important
If the ice protection has to be installed, make reference to the
Section 6.3 and ignore this paragraph.
In order to optimize transportation and avoid damage to the material, the mobile
arms of the earthing switch are disassembled from the lower mechanism.
The guide and support tubes 6.1.11 Fig. 6.1, since they do not get any counter-
reaction from the mobile arm 6.5 Fig. 6.1 of the earthing switch, are positioned
vertically.
Remove the plastic cap that protects the mobile arm interior from dust and
rubbles.
Set the earthing switch up to the almost CLOSED position, so that the internal
tubes 6.1.11 Fig. 6.1 of the earthing switch can move of some degrees from the
vertical positions.
At the same time insert the mobile arm in the position shown in figure 6.1.
Two plastic bushings 6.5.9 Fig. 6.2 are installed inside the
mobile arm tube, the first near the edge of the tube and the
second about 300 mm more internally.
During the fitting of the mobile arm 6.5 Fig. 6.2 into the guide
Important and support tube 6.1.11 Fig. 6.2, take care that the latter enters
the inner bushing without damaging it.
Follow the movement of the mobile arm with the hands; do not
roughly drop it on the guide and support tube.
Then bring the earthing switch to the OPEN position.
Let the clamp 6.1.8 Fig. 6.1 slide on the tube of the mobile arm of the earthing
switch down to the calibrated holes on the lower part of the tube. To match the
holes with ease, turn slowly the tube of the mobile arm on its centerline while
sliding the clamp 6.1.8 Fig. 6.1.
After reaching the correct position of the mobile arm, tighten the fastening screws
6.1.7 and 6.1.9 Fig. 6.1 of the clamp 5.1.8.

6.3 INSTALLATION OF THE ICE PROTECTION ON THE EARTHING

SWITCH
6.3.1 MOBILE ARM OF THE EARTHING SWITCH WITH ICE PROTECTION

The optional ice protection of the mobile contact of the earthing

Important switch is required for ice thickness equal or greater than 20 mm.

In order to optimize transportation and avoid damage to the material, the mobile
arms of the earthing switch 6.5 Fig. 6.1 and the ice protection tubes 6.5.10 Fig. 6.7
are disassembled from the lower mechanism.
The guide and support tubes 6.1.11 Fig. 6.1, since they do not get any counter-
reaction from the mobile arm of the earthing switch, are positioned vertically.
Set the earthing switch up to the OPEN position, so that the guide and support
tube 6.1.11 Fig. 6.1 is horizontal.
Connect the lower end of the support tube 6.5.10 Fig. 6.7 of the ice protection to
the hub 6.1.20 Fig. 6.7 and fasten it with the relevant bolt 6.5.11.
CLOSED, check that the front arm 5.1.2 Fig. 5.1 is horizontal Fig. 5.7 (a). The
misalignment of the centerlines of the fixed contact 5.2 Fig. 5.3, front arm 5.1.2
Fig. 5.1 and rear arm 5.1.1, is acceptable if it does not exceed the value shown in
figure 5.7 (b); in any case, when the disconnect is completely CLOSED, the
centerline of the front arm must be horizontal and aligned with the centerline of the
fixed contact.

5.1.23 Fig. 5.1 are not reached;
use the nuts 5.1.17 Fig.
5.2 of
each mobile contact 5.1.24 Fig.5.2 is centered on the guide cone 5.2.6 Fig. 5.3 of
the fixed contact.
If the fixed contact and the mobile contact 5.1.24 Fig. 5.2 are misaligned vertically,
you can raise or lower the lower bases by adjusting the nuts that fasten them to
the support structures.
If the fixed contact and the mobile contact 5.1.24 Fig.5.2) are misaligned
transversely, you can loosen the bolts fastening the bearing frame 5.1.5 Fig. 5.1 to
the respective support insulator and/or the bolts that fasten the fixed contact to the
respective support insulator and than carry out the adjustment.
When the operations above are complete and with disconnector in the completely
CLOSED position, the misalignment between the mark made on the fore arm and
the external edge of the rim 5.2.7 Fig. 5.3 of the guide cone 5.2.6 Fig. 5.3 must not
exceed +10 / -30 mm, as shown in figure 5.7 (c).
by using the free space on the bolts for the fastening and adjustment of the rotary
insulator. As an alternative, you can adjust the vertical drive shaft as indicated in

SECTION 7 – MAINTENANCE PLAN

CONTENT OF THIS SECTION

This section contains important information about the steps for the commissioning
of the switchgear. The checklist describes the procedures to carry out the
inspection and the required conditions for the commissioning of the equipment.
This section also contains the programmed maintenance plan.

7.1 MAINTENANCE PLAN

The switchgears not require special maintenance. We recommend, however, in
order to ensure the correct operation of the equipment, to carry out routine checks
and maintenance actions, especially on the component parts which are most
sensitive or subject to wear.
The frequency of checks and maintenance actions depends on the number of
operations (1,000, 2,000, 3,000 or 10,000) that have been guaranteed for the
supplied equipment.
In order to keep the guarantee of the equipment in force, routine checks and
maintenance operations must comply with the following NTC-1955 table.
In case of coastal and other corrosive and contaminated environments, every two
years it is mandatory to check and eventually to restore the grease on the
exposed parts, as described in Table NTC-1955 B.9).
Please, refer to the specific sections of this manual for the
Important details concerning lubrication and greasing of the lower part
(Section 3), of the live part (Section 4), and of the earthing
switch (Section 5).

7.2 DISASSEMBLING THE SWITCHGEAR

Danger

WARNING: before carrying out any of the following operations, make sure that:
a) The equipment is in the OPEN position;
b) Both the incoming and outgoing conductors are visibly connected to the earth;
c) The drive is disconnected from all low-voltage conductors.

7.2.1 DISCONNECTION
Disconnect all high-voltage conductors from the line terminals.
Disconnect all low-voltage conductors from the drive.

7.2.2 DISASSEMBLY
With the same tools used during the installation, and in a sequence reverse to that
described in the previous sections, remove the various parts of the switchgear.
When disassembly is complete, store correctly all components.

7.3 LIST OF TOOLS

Common tools should be adequate for the installation and maintenance of this
equipment such as box wrenches, open-end wrenches, socket wrenches, torque
wrenches with torque up to 200 Nm, screwdrivers, pliers, hammers, spirit level,
mason's rule, tape measure, etc.
As shown in the relevant figures of the previous sections, to lift the units, a truck
crane equipped with adequate ropes (slings) with eyes is required.
No special tools are therefore required.

7.4 SPARE PARTS GRID abcd

NOTE: When replacing live parts through which current will flow, the surfaces that
are permanently in contact must be treated as follows (e.g. the contact surface
between the terminal pad and the fixed-contact support):
Wipe off any trace of grease from the contact surfaces with a non-abrasive
solvent. If the surfaces are oxidized, clean them up with a steel brush or fine
emery paper;
 Cover them immediately with antioxidant paste;
Connect the surfaces as soon as possible.
Surfaces through which wiping-contact current flows (e.g. mobile contact blades)
must be covered with a thin layer of NYOGEL 760G grease (to be restored at each
inspection).
